This place was recommended so I gave it a try despite the reviews and the food was just okay. I ordered a Medium size platter which surprisingly came with 3 sides. I got the pepper steak, white rice with oxtail gravy, cabbage, and macaroni and cheese. The pepper steak was pretty good. The oxtail gravy on the rice was a bit on the dry side for gravy but the gravy from the pepper steak made up for it. I enjoyed the cabbage; just a little spice and not overwhelming. Today, I was searching for a lunch spot. Something different, and ran across Jamaica Way. Located in a strip mall with various other standard fast food options. I chose this place because it was not the standard fast food. I walked in expecting a few options. Was greeted with much more. Jamaica Way offered up a very large selection of food options. I went with the Jerk Chicken and 3 sides. The 3 sides were piled on and really made the meal a full lunch portion. I liked the food and even added more jerk chicken to completely stuff myself. I'm not sure what happened to this place. Anyway, I ordered the Oxtails which was more fat than meat. Good flavor (hence the one star) but more like rice, peas, and gravy. The collards are not fresh and way too spicy for consumption. The Curry Chicken was bland, but the white rice was undercooked and hard. Although, that has always been like that, the curry chicken used to be solid. Mac and cheese has so little cheese, it was more like just mac. Yams, ok, consistent. Cabbage solid. My aunt and I shared the curry goat and oxtails, both of which were flavorful enough for me to finish off everything. We ate in the place since I was just wasting time before my flight from the airport which is super close. It's a small little place in a somewhat desolate plaza. They serve you in a To go box and everything is kept warm like in a buffet. I also had the Mac and cheese which was just ok. We had bottles of water but when we asked for ice they didn't have any. I'm assuming this place is really just meant for food taken to go. They have tables just to allow you to eat there but they don't waiter or serve you otherwise. I'm not quite sure why the ratings are so low, because I love the food here and the service is SO friendly. Yes, the interior is a little lackluster - just picture it as one of those hole-in-the-wall places that doesn't need to amp up their interior design because their food is so good. I always go during lunchtime on the weekdays with coworkers and bring the food back to eat. It always makes other people in the office jealous, but luckily they give you so much food for $9-11 (medium and large platters, a few dollars more for the goat curry and shrimp curry) that you can share (or have a second and third meal out of it). The medium platter comes with two large sides (I always get the jerk chicken, comes with the bone in it), and it feels like you're walking out of there with a 12 lb meal. This is a neighborhood Caribbean restaurant in the Penrose shopping center. I'm a huge fan of this cuisine and usually the off the beaten path restaurants are a hit. However I didn't find this place to fit the bill. My main disappointment was with the jerk chicken. I was moderately underwhelmed with flavor and severely disappointed that of all things they didn't have plantains. Considering they are literally next door to a grocery store a Caribbean dining spot should never run out of plantains. They have the food out in front (cafeteria style) so you see what you are getting ahead of time. Other places I have been everything is brought from the back. I honestly don't really care as long as the food is good. I'm not going to write this place off as totally bad but I personally wasn't impressed enough to try again. But give it a try yourself. I am first generation born US of J'cans so I have background in this. The customer service was okay, not very pleasant. 1. They are quite expensive in terms of sides and the container was rather small for a large. 2. MAJOR: the sides were not good. I ordered rice and peas with oxtail gravy and yams. The rice and peas tasted and looked like they came out of a box, i.e. Grace/Goya, etc..couldn't even taste the "hint" of coconut and the yams had a weird after taste to it. The only way you would like this food is if you are not from the Caribbean or have never been so you only imagined what it would taste like. The food was bland and had no seasoning to it. All of the gravies were full of oil. When the server went to take out some curry goat the fat had solidified on top meaning that the meat was not heated to keep it warm. The ox tails are not trimmed of the fat (I have a pic if you want to see) so there are large pieces of fat on it. My last warning should have been when the people working did not know what was in the food. I bought 2 large orders anyway. Needless to say my husband & I stayed in the hotel all day the next day sick. between the sour smell of what was left in the refrigerator & us I felt so sorry for the cleaning lady. New owners and the rice is over cooked and the beans are under cooked, no seasoning with the curry or oxtails just color and cabbage has vinegar taste or pickles taste it was just awful. This was my third visit to Jamaica Way. Over the last three visits I had Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken and today I had the fresh Stewed Snapper. All of the food was very good. The food is fresh and you are able to get in and out fast. The fish does take about ten - fifteen minutes to make fresh, but it's worth the wait. The patties ( beef or curried chicken) are very good. I bought one just to try and I was surprised that it was NOT the frozen kind from a box. The patties are homemade and taste very good and the crust is flaky. I haven't been there early enough to taste a fresh one out of the oven, but I can imagine how much better it would taste. I usually don't like the chicken patty, but Jamaica Way's was good and had small pieces/chunks of chicken that differs from others that ground up their filling too much. If you know Jamaican food, then you know that good Jamaican food is hard to find. This is one of the good spots. Not great but good! Since good Jamaican food is so hard to find, good gets 4 stars from me. I've had the jerk chicken (best), oxtails (average but still decent), and curry chicken(very good). The sides are pretty good, the cabbage and greens are well seasoned and the Mac and cheese is on point. My high bar measuring stick for Caribbean food in philly is Ron's Caribbean. While Jamaican Way falls below that measure, it's still pretty good and being from West Philly, it beats driving all the way to Broad and Olney to Ron's. read more

I used come here if I didn't feel like traveling across the other side of southwest for some Jamaican food. I'm usually disappointed after each order too. I usually alternated between the curry chicken and the jerk chicken, both with rice and peas and cabbage. I don't know what it is about this place's food, but it has to be eaten immediately after purchase. There is like this greasy, unappetizing buttery taste in the rice. The rice will also dry out. It literally makes me sick, so I end up throwing it out. I've ordered from other places and didn't have this issue. This restaurant and many other Jamaican spots in the area have fried and steamed dumplings and fried plantains on their menu, but seem to never serve them. What's with that? I'm unsure how so many people had such a negative experience here. I had the jerk chicken with cabbage, vegetables, and yams. Everything has flavour and although I prefer my chicken spicier, it had a nice kick. Portion was more than fair considering the price. Food overall was good but not out of this world. Let's start by the containers didn't have no dividers so I ask the gentlemen if he could put my greens in a separate container he going to reply and say that is a side and I would have to charge for you .
