It's hard to share our experience and put into words how it's been going, while at the same time, going through bad news- which was not how we where expecting it to go on our first visit.... I'll explain in a minute...worth reading!
Some basics out of the way first, just in case you need to check some stuff off your list before you decide to leave or find your best Vet in San Diego: the staff is friendly, kind, helpful, and on it The place is clean, cozy, and adorable The one who really is like a real-life-size SUPER HERO is DR.KIRKPATRICK.... The best way I can describe WHY I WOULD ONLY go with him and NO-ONE ELSE IS through this quick story :
Gently put, if I hadn't met him, our dog could've been very likely dead very soon. We have a 3 year old DOBERMAN. I had been taking her to a vet (I won't say the name but it's a reputable one), to get her basic shots and preventative-care taken care off. I thought she had it all covered. For some reason , I never felt like a person was treating my dog , it always felt very sterile. I had come to believe that this was just how it was and this was the best option. That being said, I was always hopeful that I'd find someone who loves animals, treats you like a human, and also your animal as you would if you weren't looking... someone who you could put your trust on and feel at peace, someone that would make it all feel better even if things weren't going great! I've lived in SD my whole-life, up and down the coast and sometimes the east parts as well, with different dogs at times- I've had my share of vets, clinics, specialists...NONE have been "wonderful" with one exception: we did find her and she moved away.
Now , insert Dr. Kirkpatrick, who came into our lives through meeting my husband... I went to him because I heard what a great guy he was. On our first meeting, he did a full test on her ... she comes back POSITIVE FOR HEARTWORM! If you don't know what this is let me explain it in a quick way, although he is the expert at this, I'll try: it's NOT common here, however, we still should treat our dogs as part of their ROUTINE preventative-care. I cannot say, why the vet I left did not check for it, ask me, nor mention it! It is passed through a MOSQUITO, so there are cases here , just not common. The mosquito will transmit this disease which will kill your dog. These are worms that spread and get large and they invade the HEART AND LUNGS. It will also go UNDETECTED by you for MONTHS, unless you have a blood test. The preventative-care is not a big deal , nor expensive- It won't break the bank, but heartworm will. It's expensive, it's a LONG treatment, and it's an ART to get rid off. It depends on so many things what treatment they do on your dog to cure for it , if it's not too late.
After MONTHS of medicine, and protocols, tomorrow is our dogs LAST SHOT. She will get this last shot and be on some meds for maybe less than a month now.
Hopefully this is the last of it and we've killed the worms. She will get re-tested after this and every year thereafter as well, just to make sure. We are staying positive and hopeful. I can't imagine going through this with someone other than Dr. Kirkpatrick. Whatever happens I am forever grateful for crossing paths with him, his love for animals, his intelligence, his will to save her, and how he's been there with us through it all.
Whether you are thinking of choosing a vet or have an animal that has heartworm.... look no further, this is the guy and team you want next to you and your loved animal, whether all is good, or shit hits the ceiling! read more
