Ok it's a roadside bbq shack. Signs are hand painted and it's rough and rugged put together as it grew looks are the real thing. Don't be put off by anything including it's easy to miss. This is a strong bbq eatery!! The sides are all fantastic, don't miss out on the Cole slaw as it's a serious old south gem. Above accolades aside this mustard base bbq is simply Great! Best bbq chicken sandwich I've ever had. Main choices of brisket, ribs, pork and chicken are all a step above what you think is good. Others should take lessons. This place is a gem in Folkston. It's a small locally owned business with great food. I tried the loaded fries with chicken instead of pork. It was sooo good. The chicken was tender and chipped finely. It was mixed with a delicious bbq sauce over a bed of fries. The sauce has a slight heat which set the fries on fire. I selected the full size which was way too much food to eat. They're very generous with the portions and the prices are reasonable. I truly enjoyed this lunch. Definitely a bbq place you would expect to find in a southern town. Great place to go if you want some good southern bbq and sides at a good price. The ribs and pulled pork are always cooked well and they are very generous with bbq sauce. The French fries tend to disappoint just not to great all around but they aren't the selling point of the restaurant at all.The mac n cheese is always quite good very creamy and cheesy which is what you would be expecting maybe a little lacking on the seasoning but nonetheless it's a place worth eating at. Got bbq to-go from Jalen's last night. This is excellent southern style bbq. I had the pulled pork sandwich, Black Bottom fries, and baked beans. The sandwich was excellent. Pork with a generous amount of sauce served on a grilled and buttered bun with a dash of pepper. The Black Bottom fries are seasoned with the Jalen's bbq sauce. They are salty, sweet, and delicious. Speaking of sweet try the baked beans. There must be a cup of brown sugar in every pint. Needless to say Jalen's isn't for the health conscious, unless you try the new baked chicken salad. read more

I asked the guy at a gas station where to go for barbecue and he sent me here. The other review doesn't even mention that this is a barbecue joint.. great job on that review. I had a chopped barbecue beef sandwich and some crazy fries slathered with meat and sauce. To be honest with you, I'm not sure exactly what the f#@$ is going on at this place. I think its run by a high school kid, and the place itself is something slightly nicer than a shack with an outdoor dining area that looks like it barely survived a nuclear holocaust replete with crappy, dirty plastic chairs. We stumbled across this place years ago, after a family trip to the swamp. Jalen's is as authentic a Southern barbecue experience as you will get. Can't believe it's still run by that kid! We stopped at this little take out stand on the side of US 1 on our way back to Camden Co. We've passed it several times but never stopped because it didn't look like it much. The reviews here on Yelp were good so we decided to give it a try since we were hungry and were not really wanting chicken. We were very glad we stopped!!!! The pork sandwich was excellent! It was well full of meat and we did not find a piece of fat anywhere. We tried the "black bottom fries" and they were very good too. So lucky to be traveling off the beaten path on our way to Charleston to chance a great lunch at Jalens. My friend had the chopped (pulled?) pork sandwich dinner with baked beans and potato salad. All really good. But I had the best! Loaded fries. Take the black bottom fries and add chopped pork and their bbq sauce (made by some drunk man so he can't remember the recipe) and call me happy. Asked for something off menu, and LOVED IT. Last year we went to a Disney water park and one of the foods there was a BBQ Hot Dog. Jalen's makes great BBQ, and they have hot dogs. Very nice people making very good food. Had the pulled pork and ribs for a late lunch. Very generous servings, made right here. I loved the mustardy sauce but a few in our group thought it was good but they prefer more traditional sauce. The fries were amazing. So was the sweet tea. And they secretly butter and toast the buns. Sooo good. The place is nothing fancy. Sort of a step up from a roadside place (tables, indoor plumbing). The bbq pork sandwich was good, but that burger was killer. Bbq pork, was good. They use a mustard based bbq sauce.
