I think they have a small lot in the back too. This place looks small from the outside, it's not small at all. Had to be at least 30 tables throughout the place. The decor was aesthetically pleasing. They have a bar, but it might be more for service since I didn't see any stools there. Service was excellent! Anything we needed, we got in a reasonable amount of time. When we got food to go, it was packed up with love. I ordered the house marg and Alex stuck to shots of 1800. The marg rivaled the best. Fresh squeezed limes & was 0% tart. I could sip on those all day long. The 1800 was $8.75 and I had a Julio Repo at $8.50, which is very reasonable. I ordered Torta milenesa chicken. Wow!!! This was like a gift from the Gods. The chicken breading was seasoned perfectly and was tender, yet crispy. This was definitely a top tier torta for me. Just look at the picture, this thing was perfect. All of the flavors came together flawlessly, and it wasn't sloppy one bit. I ordered 1 chicken flauta. It was fried unblemished, you could eat the ends, which some folks over fry. This is how you do it folks, the chicken was moist and delicious. Top tier flauta skills here. I ordered 1 chicken tamale. Again the chicken was tender and tasty. The green sauce complimented it very well adding some salt to the sweet of the masa. Another top tier item here. I ordered tacos choosing chorizo, canitas, and pastor. Was canvassing in the area and stopped by initially to borrow the bathroom and ended up staying for lunch. Tried a few different tacos and they were all really delicious - especially the Baja fish tacos. The back room is really spacious and chill that I felt totally comfortable eating inside. My coworkers and I ended up eating there all three days we were in town. One day they even had a taco special which allowed us to eat even more tacos per person! Don't let the area/neighborhood fool you- Jalapeno Grill is a keeper! From the outside, it looks like a small little hole in the wall, but the inside is extremely clean and updated. The lighting is great and the booths are newly constructed. It's a cozy lil place at best! Their chips & salsas are so good, they had 3 different heats of salsa- and they were outstanding! We also got the happy hour margaritas, which were quite tasty too and served in the cutest little mason jars.... yes, mason jars at a Mexican restaurant... I *loved* it!! My much anticipated first visit to Jalapeño. Our server was the only person working on the floor had 6 tables, bar patrons and hopefully a pedometer. 5:45 on a Sunday, and one server/tender doesn't make much sense but maybe this was an off Sunday. Started off with the jalapeño queso and chile relleno. Queso was extra thin but had solid flavor, not worth $6 for a cup though. The relleno was super disappointing. It was smothered in a mama Italiana marinara. Seriously, this dish was overwhelmed by the sauce and oregano. Pepper nor cheese had much flavor and due to the sauce party, it was entirely mushy. No bueno! My date ordered the veggie fajitas with a mushroom taco, and for me, the chicken enchiladas. The chicken was super dry, flavorless and served with such a small amount of tomatillo sauce. Asking for more, I was unexpectedly charged. The veggie fajitas were not the typical fajita style. No sizzle when served, the veggies almost looked steamed. Not much flavor, we had to ask for the sour cream, cheese and lettuce. This is a standard, no? The shredded cheese had been sitting out for quite some time as it was rubbery. We both enjoyed the rice though! Fluffy and flavorful, this sadly was the best part of the meal. The mushroom taco (canned mushrooms) were....lets just say....canned mushrooms. I go here occasionally for lunch and it is usually not crowded so it's easy to get in and out during the lunch hour. The service is pretty good. The food is usually quite good. The only thing I have had an issue with is the taquitos that come on the sampler appetizer - they have been over fried and way to hard twice. This is great, flavor filled Mexican food. With a little Cali Mex too. We almost go every week. Everything we have has so many notes of flavor. The Tacos, Chile Rellenos, Enchiladas, & Molcajete are so good. The menu covers all the basics. And agreed its not an Americanized Mexican place. Their hot sauce/salsa are so good. This is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurants in Wilmington. The neighborhood is a little sketchy--but trust me the food is worth it once you're inside. My favorite things from here include the Chimichanga, the carne asada fries (delicious carne asada and cheese over a pile of French fries). The tacos are out of this world--I like the tacos al pastor, carne asada, and the pollo tacos are also really tasty! To top it off their margaritas are so good--not an unnatural lime green color like some other restaurants serve. The service here is terrible due to their lack of staffing. It's really hard to get the attention of the ONE waitress working as a barista/takeout cashier/ waitress/hostess/general cashier. The time my party and I dined in, the waitress came out with our food in to-go boxes/foil. After telling her that we had told her we were going to dine in (3 times to be exact), she insisted we had not conveyed that information, even though we sat in the restaurant and she served us chips and salsa. She never heard us properly because management has her extended way beyond her capacity. The food is mediocre. I had the carne asada burrito before and that was good - as one should come to expect from basically combining ingredients together and wrapping it in a flour tortilla. The order of Baja fish tacos are ok. The fish is battered and fried but it came with too much American shredded cheese, that masked the taste of the fish. The time I ordered the fish ceviche was overall a great disappointment, and the deciding factor to not return to this place. The ceviche was combined with cucumber and onions but came in a sweet tomato paste, maybe ketchup sauce. To those who have had Peruvian ceviche or Mexican ceviche you expect the protein to be cured in sour lime juice and salt, NOT doused in sweet ketchup. Anyone familiar with Mexican seafood would be able to guess that what they served me was a fish Coctel instead of Ceviche. After asking what this was, the waitress told me this was the manner the restaurant prepared Ceviche. If this is true, their menu should reflect this method of preparation (which it doesn't), not have the patron second guess how the restaurant prepares all their dishes. When I asked for my refund, the waitress told me I had to speak with the manager (who was not present in the restaurant). The waitress provided me a business card with a number and I called twice while I was sitting down (and once while in front of the waitress) but all the calls went directly to voicemail. There was no point in discussing my order further with the waitress, since her mind was clearly on the other orders she was juggling and was clearly just trying to reflect my issue onto someone else, so we left to another restaurant. Final thoughts: If you want easy, simple food and are leisurely strolling through your day, this will do. If you want to enjoy authentic Mexican food or just Mexican food with proper service, choose another restaurant. read more
