She took the time to do a pre consult before my appointment and took the extra time to go over color choices. Working late in the evening to get it just perfect. In my opinion, this is by far the best hair salon in downtown Santa Monica. I have curly hair and my haircuts and colour used to be inconsistent before Jade. It was frustrating when hairstylists tried to apply their own ideas on my hair, without considering mine. I've been going to her for trims and perms for a few years now, and every time she has gone out of her way to carve out her time for me even if my appointment may take several hours. She's very committed to her clients and will not let you leave until every strand is perfect, and it shows amongst all the regulars who come bounding in through her front door with massive smiles and new stories to tell. She's friendly, will make a tea for you or offer food or just good conversation. You can tell Irene knows her stuff. She's an expert, very knowledgeable about all the ins and out of hair, and can take on any challenge (something I especially appreciate because not too many hair salons want to take on a perm these days!) She makes good recommendations- everything from how much trim I should take off for split ends, to different hair colors, how we could apply color AND perm correctly, to the options I have for hair extensions, and the difference between acid and alkaline perms. It was an amazing experience and highly recommend this salon. I made an appointment with Irene and came out feeling like a million bucks. They were very welcoming, comforting and definitely made me feel like home. When there's no parking on the street, they have parking slots for you in the rear garage. Just call the studio if you can't find parking and someone will come out to guide you. Big plus! Very affordable and only Paul Mitchell products used. Irene is a very high caliber stylist and has many years of professional experience. I came in, showed Irene couple of pictures of what hairstyle I was going for and she delivered it picture perfect. Plus hair massage and shoulder massage. She is very detailed and passionate about her work. She also gives you a 7 day grace period to come back, if you feel like you need more of your hair touched up. Sue is also awesome! She's Irene's assistant. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Irene is the only one I trust with my hair. I never know exactly what I want and she takes the time to walk me through options to make sure I'll be happy. I am a constant user of yelp. However, I rarely write reviews, but I must write a review for this salon from the positive experience I had. I came here for a color correction. First off, had made a mistake being cheap by going to a beauty school. What I wanted was an ashy blonde ombrè. I had showed the student and teacher a picture of the color I wanted. After they were done, I ended up with an orange/copper color, not what I asked for. After I a month of having the color that drove me crazy every time I looked in the mirror, I went to another stylist, she told me that she can fix my color and that it was simple. I know she really tried, but I still had the copper tone I so disliked. Addition, my hair was fried and damaged from all the chemical. I had started to lose hope for getting the hair color I want. One of my girlfriends referred me to Irene for the color correction. Irene was straight up front with me and told me all the steps she would have to take and also we talked about the budget before she executed the process. I liked that she was very clear on every level so that there was no surprises at the end. Overall, I was at the salon for many hours. Irene and staff were very welcoming and patient with me. Everything was sooooo expensive (I moved to California from Oregon where hair salons are never more than $120 for a cut and color and style ) and all the places down here were just way out of my budget. It was a Paul Mitchell teaching school so I knew it had a good reputation and people were raving about Irene. So I made an appointment and I came to Irene for an extension styling. After talking to her about my hair and what I was looking for, I left that appointment with permanent extensions that have changed my whole life. I'm not kidding. She did an incredible job explaining everything to me and helping me figure out what type of extensions would work best for my lifestyle. I've already gone back and she was even more helpful the second time! She is so knowledgeable when it comes to colors, cuts, extensions, everything! I've been to Irene three times (going today for a fourth), and it's been the best experience I've ever had getting a haircut. Irene is welcoming, sincere and funny and great to talk to. I get my hair washed (twice!), and I feel like she really cares about me and that I'm not just another customer. She has great advice for me on taking care of my hair, and I finally have found a haircut that I feel confident with. It's not a waste of time - It is the difference between a shitty hair cut and a rad hair cut. Not all hair stylists are good just because they work in a salon. ALWAYS, i repeat ALWAYS read reviews. That's why it was an easy decision to book an appointment with her because of all the wonderful things i read about her. Reviews don't lie. Irene is straight forward, honest, and detailed. She wants to know EXACTLY how you want your hair cut to be, before she does anything. She makes it very clear that you are on the same page as her before she does anything, and i love that. She did a fantastic hair cut on me, considering the right half of my hair was a whole INCH longer then the left side. It was pretty bad. It looks awesome now. She even let me blow dry my own hair because I just like doing it myself. She's the coolest. A lovely lady with great taste in music. (she had pandora on and the dixie chicks were playing. Oh come on. How could you not love this place? Irene was so warm and welcoming as soon as I walked into the place, and she's clearly an expert on hair. I have hip-length, very dark brown hair and wanted to put in blue highlights. I was nervous about it because I've never bleached my hair or had such a funky color before. Irene talked to me for an HOUR on different options I could use, then made an appointment for me the next day. Irene took all of my concerns into consideration and chose some unique placement for my highlights. They are really subtle and I love them! She spent some time explaining how to keep the blue color vivid, and even offered to show me how to color the highlights myself when the color washes out, since I was going to be out of the country for several months. All in all, I can't recommend Jade Design Studio enough. The prices for services are comparable to other salons at this level of skill, but the difference is that Jade clearly cares about her clients and treats them like family. OMG.... I love what Irene done with my hair. I have been going to Irene for everything, cut, color, hair repairs. The hair cuts were always great, just as I picture it. The color, you'll never experiences the funny look of bright roots that don't match the rest. One time I was early for my appointment, I saw her go back and pick up previous highlights, she explained doing that you'll get the continuous highlights and won't look choppy. My latest was the Brazilian Blowout Treatment. I've always had that awkward wave that my ends would go the same way, or when I just air dry it would poof up, not silky smooth. Now, after the treatment.... I walk out of the shower, no need to blow dry, no need to flat iron, no products, and my hair is PERFECTLY SILKY SMOOTH...... This is my first yelp review - I signed up just so I could share how wonderful I think Irene is! I've been getting haircuts from Irene for about 6 years now and I've never had a bad cut. Plus, her cuts last a really long time, so sometimes I feel like pampering myself and going to get my haircut, but my hair still looks great months after it has been cut! Getting my hair cut by Irene has definitely saved me money that way. Irene is great not only at cutting hair, but also at giving consults and finding cuts that look good for your face shape and preferences. I like really easy to manage cuts where I can just shower and go and while keeping this in mind, Irene always makes my hair look great. I've tried some new styles thanks to her and loved them all. It takes me a long time to trust a hair stylist but now I just go in and give Irene a few preferences (nothing that will get in my eyes, wash and go), ask Irene what she thinks would look good on me, get suggestions from her and then get it cut. Last year I got my first asymmetrical cut and I ended up liking it so much that I got another one the next time I went in. Oh, and last year I moved to the Bay Area but I visit LA a few times a year so I just wait to get my hair cut at Irene's. She is THAT good that it's worth the wait. The last time I was there she was setting up an appointment with another client who moved to the midwest and still gets his haircut by Irene when he visits LA. Irene is awesome! I've been going to her since 2001 and was sad when I had to move out of CA to be leaving her. I had converted my brother, and my husband to her haircuts. She also did my wedding which was amazing as it was in Norcal and she had to travel. She did my hair & makeup, my mom's hair & makeup. Cut my dad's, brother's, and husband's hair. Also did hair for 4 bridesmaids, all the day of the wedding. I miss her haircuts so much! With Irene I've gone super short (where it was shaved in the back), to long layers with a heavy bang. I just got a cut in Chicago, and gotta say...it was a most miserable experience. She's also super friendly and easy to talk to. She's also very perceptive and if she sees you may be uncomfortable with the haircut she'll be sure to offer some recommendations to some changes such that you definitely will be leaving happy. With my super short hair, she had done a dramatic asymmetric cut with one side being much longer...one look in the reflection she saw the doubt tinged with fear in my eyes and just went ahead a snipped it a bit shorter so it was less dramatic, but still slightly noticeable. read more

She encouraged me to find a photo on the iPad, and then explained the process, the color, and the price so that I would understand everything ahead of time. She doesn't just throw bleach on your head.. She determines where you have previous color or regrowth to make sure your new color comes out even. These guys are fantastic! I went in to have my hair and makeup done for a wedding and I could not have been more satisfied. First of all, everyone who works here is really nice. What I particularly liked was that my stylist told me every thing she was doing with my hair along the way,and asked for my feedback every so often to make sure I knew what was happening and was getting exactly what I wanted. The make up artist was also really receptive and sweet, and did a great job. I got my hair highlighted, cut, blown out, and curled, and had eye and face markup done, everything looked beautiful. Irene is great with color and gives very good hair cuts if she is not in a hurry. I have gone there for several years. I have noticed they are VERY inconsistent with pricing!! I went for a cut and color touch up and it was $120. 4 Weeks later I got a color touch up and PM shine and it was $193 so the price of color went from about $65 to $95.
