It is usually well staffed and you do get served quickly. The chips are fresh and very tasty and the batter on the fish is nice and cooked well. The curry sauce is nice and it is nice to dip your chips in! The battered sausages are tasty and the batter is nice and crispy. You cannot eat in which is a shame but you can have your chips wrapped or unwapped ( to eat now). The staff are mostly young but it is well run and worth a visit.

The real disappointment was the food. We started with the calamari. That was pretty decent. The fry was similar to mozzarella sticks, the portions are huge so easily shareable. I ordered the 18 oz t-bone (medium rare), chips and cesar salad. Plenty of chips, they were longer hot and little soggy by the time they got out. The steak was the real disappointment. The cook was rare bordering on blue with very little seasoning. Additionally there was no sear on the steak and it was real tough. The fibers were present through the meat and it was poorly trimmed resulting in almost a fourth of it being inedible. The cesar dressing was real mayo forward. The atmosphere was great with plenty of folks and you could tell weekends are fun. This may have been an off meal but my food on this trip was not representative of the reviews.

The best thing about HF&C is their batter. Unlike most chip shop batter, which really just seems to be there to blandly soak up as much grease as possible, the batter at HF&C is as light as can be, and incredibly crispy. Also, I don't know what they put in it, but it has a truly delightful flavour. The chips are usually great, especially if you happen to arrive at the beginning of a new batch. Prices have gone up lately and it is no longer a particularly cheap meal, but it is so good that we make a visit at least once a month.
