The queue in…read morethere on a Friday night should be a clue as to the quality of this fine establishment, as it frequently stretches out of the door; and the back wall is covered with grateful letters from all sorts of people who've placed large orders with them and found them to be exceptional. The best thing about HF&C is their batter. Unlike most chip shop batter, which really just seems to be there to blandly soak up as much grease as possible, the batter at HF&C is as light as can be, and incredibly crispy. Also, I don't know what they put in it, but it has a truly delightful flavour. The chips are usually great, especially if you happen to arrive at the beginning of a new batch. Prices have gone up lately and it is no longer a particularly cheap meal, but it is so good that we make a visit at least once a month. By the wayI recommend going for the haddock rather than the cod. It's slightly cheaper, more environmentally sound, and it tastes better too.

The portion sizes are generous, and requests are accommodated as best to their capability. Understandably gets a bit busy on a Friday night, but the quality also seems to increase.

They don't seem to be hand cut but they do taste like proper chippy chips rather than just deep-fried frozen fries. Fish is always fresh and there's the usual range of pies (Pukka), sausages and saveloys. Food is cooked to order and so you may have a wait at all but the most peak of times. This can't be a bad thing though, can it? Parking on the High Street is impossible and so you'll have to use the car park down the side of the CoOp. It's not too far to walk though! It's not my first choice chippy but, if Seafarer is closed then this will do!

So, we decided to give it a go, and boy were we pleased. Walking in, you see that it's not just a take away chippy. You can sit in the restaurant as well and get served. So we went with that option. The minute you sit down, they serve a small plate of shrimp. Last evening's had a whole bunch of roe, which freaked my partner out a little, but hey, more for me! :) Anyway, the portion sizes here are much more appropriate than most chippies in London, and a small cod and chips is a good enough meal for one. The batter is very crispy, and the chips tasty. The restaurant is even licensed, so we had a white wine each (cheap wine btw) and a fry up for dinner. Classy! It's definitely more "local" and feels like a timeless British kind of an establishment where it's less like Superfish, but more like "Cheers" where everybody does know your name. A great chippy, oozing with atmosphere, service and classic British... "charm".
