Jacks is a traditional men's barbershop located within the historic Davidsons Clothing for Men store in Downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Specializing in classic grooming services, Jacks offers expertly crafted manicure and pedicure services, among others, in a welcoming. friendly, and relaxing environment. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award. Today, after having made an appointment for 2:00pm, I revisited Jacks, and since my birthday is slowly approaching, I decided to treat myself to what they call in Jacks: "The Flush Signature Package. This package included a Classic Cut, with a deep cleansing shampoo, scalp and neck massage, precision haircut and style and aroma therapy hot towels. This was followed by the Executive Hand Detail which included a deluxe manicure that also included an exfoliating scrub and a warm paraffin wax dip. And last but not least, I received the Foot Treatment. Here my nails were trimmed, I had the removal of dead skin and I received a foot massage that promoted good circulation! During all this process I was treated like royalty. When I arrived they offered me a non-alcoholic drink. I had an iced Coca-Cola, comfortably seated and waiting to be called. When my stylist was ready, she came down to get me. Then we went to the second floor. I chose to go using the elevator rather than the long stairs. Once there I received the treatment previously described. Then my Manicurist / Pedicure continued doing the other things mention after once again offering me another non-alcoholic drink. What an amazing experience. When I was finished may hands and my legs felt so good from all the massages and treatments received. If you have an opportunity of going there I would highly recommend you do. You will feel like new again. Having these treatments done really does make a difference. Very nice men's barber shop. Jack's is an all inclusive "spa"-type facility ranging from hair cuts to pedicures to "manscaping". Walk-ins are welcome but it seems appointments are easiest as the stylist stay pretty busy. The hair cuts are consistent and quality at a price that is comparable to any of the big name men's hair salons. The staff is very nice. I'm told that you can BYO alcohol and store it there to have while in the chair. There is also a clothing store downstairs that sells business/ casual attire making this a one stop shop to feel great about the way you look. Jacks is the best hair cut experience in Roanoke! I don't really plan haircuts, they just happen when I find my mess is to much to deal with. But I'm always happy when this problem arises in Roanoke so that I can book a fix at Jacks. I first heard of this place from local co-workers who said they took time off to get their heads worked on here. I was curious and called to make an appointment. The experience was great because in addition to the regular stuff, Jacks offers hot towels and a straight edge shave. Man that makes a person feel renewed! Yesterday I was really luck because I was a walk in and they had a slot open. Normally I call or use their website to get an appointment because they are really busy. Walked in, didn't have an appointment. The whole day was booked but front desk took my number down. Just when i walked out, she ran down the street to find me and got an appointment 30 minutes later. Service was TOP NOTCH, I have paid a lot more for less quality haircut than Jacks. She really took her time to go over countless time to make sure my hair was prefect. Her attention to detail was reflected by her work. First time I ever had someone cut my hair with a razor to make sure every piece of hair was even. I moved here from NY just 6 days ago and Deb made me feel like I had been a regular there for years! The most bright, funny, loving and authentic personality I ever seen. After one concerning interaction with the scheduling staff here, and one downright infuriating one, I feel compelled to advise LGBTQIA+ people and allies to avoid Jacks. When I called in to make an appointment for a haircut for my fiancée, everything went smoothly until I got to her name. Even after I explained that she was a woman who had been getting men's haircuts for years, it was clear they were, in the most generous terms hesitant about cutting her hair. I passed this on to her and she ultimately went elsewhere. Fast-forward several weeks and it's time for another trim. She called Jacks herself, and this time was told in no uncertain terms that they provide men's haircuts for men only. They refused to schedule an appointment for her. While I'm glad they haven't gotten a cent of our money, I'm outraged she was treated that way, and question whether that denial of service is even legal. Long story short: If you're LGBTQIA+ or just give a damn about equality, get your hair cut somewhere else. read more

I've had a men's haircut for years and have had no problem as a customer at top of the line barber shops around the country. When I attempted to schedule with Jacks I was rudely informed that they will only perform men's haircut on men. I don't think we should be gendering people over the phone and I don't know how this policy affects trans men or gay men but it certainly seems to rule out any gender nonconforming person. I'm disappointed and angry to encounter this kind of bigoted thinking in 2019. The legality is surely questionable as well. You could have had a loyal customer, but you chose to let your hateful prejudice win out. Do better. read more

To the two reviewers who are slamming this place because as females they were unable to receive a haircut, wake up! This is not about hate, this is about business and marketing. When you are in business you have to make business decisions based on what is best for YOUR business. Barbers are trained to make haircuts look masculine. Cosmetologists are trained to make short women's cuts look more feminine. Even if a few women want a "masculine" look, the majority does not, and as soon as a business opens the door to a whole other market (women) they will start getting requests for "women's cuts" that they are NOT trained to do! Then they will start getting bad reviews from straight women because the haircut looks too "manly!" Its a no win situation for these barbers. Leave them alone! If someone doesnt feel comfortable cutting your hair find another place, there's one on every corner. But you don't have to slam them with a bad review when they only want to do work they feel they are trained for! read more

Ok, so I've been blessed/cursed with a larger than normal head and stuck to my big head is a pretty mean mane of hair prone to hedgehog-like tendencies. I have warned every barber/stylist I have ever been to that if cut too short, I develop an Asian afro. This place understands that. While my loyalties lie with my usual barber back in Northern Virginia, I think I've found my go-to barbershop while serving out the rest of my prison sentence in Roanoke. How can you go wrong with a scalp massage and hot towel to your face? Straight razor to clean up the neckline? Check. Choice of beverage with haircut? Yup. And this is one of the few places I've found that does a shoe shine. They also embrace our Skynet overlords and accept online reservations. read more

I've looked high and low for someone to cut my hair in the manner that it needed to be cut. I have had either very poor hair cuts, or good haircuts from people who thought that they were doing me a favor when I was the customer. Both scenarios non acceptable. When I was referred to Jacks I ventured there with a bit of scteptisism, but that totally vanished when I was greeted and was explained the system. I've been getting my hair cut by Sharon for almost a year now--she's great! Very down to earth, and gives one of the best haircuts I've ever had. +1 for online reservations. P.S. Hands down the best service of any barber shop. Was very nervous about getting hair/beard trimmed and styled. I had been growing hair for about 7 months. Id always used a womans salon and learned there is a huge difference between a beautician and a barber!! A man should only let a true barber trim/cut his hair. The experience and service are worth every penny. I wanted to get rid of the ultra conservative look Id had for 20 plus years before growing my hair out. I told Journey the looks I liked and what my goal was and after my consultation, I reluctantly agreed to go for it. After the haircut and beard trim, I have to say, Im hooked! A customer for life. Journey rocked it out. A true professional. You can tell she loves what she does and is a master. Upon leaving, I went ahe ad and booked my nect appointment. Probably the best place to get a haircut in Roanoke. All the stylists are friendly and it's fairly easy to get an appointment. I'm very critical about how my car is cut and in particular I enjoy a good fade. They are able to do that here and are very thorough. They also offer beverages while waiting for your stylist and have TVs in the waiting area. Also they use a straight razor on the neckline (which is hard to come by). read more

I've been trying to find a good place to get my hair cut for what seems like my entire life. During that time my go to place was merely the one where I could compromise the least. This has all changed with Jack's. Right when you walk in you know it's a going to be good and I had all my expectations met and more. This place absolutely knows what good service is! They leave no stone unturned when it comes to completely satisfying their guest. From the time we walked in to jacks we were pleased, the receptionist was very friendly and immediately helped us bc it was our first time there and she even offered us a cold drink while we wait! As for the cut, Meleah Miller was awesome, she took her time and made sure she knew exactly what my son wanted before she even started. She asked him the whole time if he liked everything and then when she was done she made 100% sure he liked everything before he even got out of her chair! Avoid!!!! Had an appointment that i ran 5 minutes late to due to traffic. I received a call from the manager just as i finally found parking. I was told( with a rather angry tone) that I would either half to downgrade my service or reschedule... reluctant to reschedule, i did. I returned a week later only to get the worst haircut I have ever had. I had a twenty something cut my hair. I didn't realize at first that it was as bad as it was due to being turned away from the mirror the whole time and, when I was finally able to see,there was so much product in my hair that I couldn't tell.
