I ordered a tea and it was hilarious, barman turned around and flick the kettle on... Yep, no fancy gimmick hot water machine it was a just kettle and served up in a big standard ole irish cup. Old school, loved it! There was great banter going on amongst folk, the barman also doubled up as a bookie so that had folk very lively altogether. From the city, use to paying high prices so it's great when ye get out into the country, €4 for pint of Guinness and cup of tea was like €1 My husband got talking to an old local man who was super friendly, he recognised us as not being from around the area which was nice of him to say hello :-)

The atmosphere was perfect! It was early Sunday morning, and there were already a few locals inside having their morning beer and reading the newspaper. I did some exploring because it looks so small on the outside, but you get in, and it just keeps going and going. Looks like they get large crowds during the evenings, and even offer lots of live music and DJs. The bartender was friendly.

The steak sandwich in the other hand was unreal! Chunky chips, thick sliced bread and the most tender cut of steak. Perfect for a sandwich. I engulfed all the food. The chips were a winner. Fureys tends to be a busy spot, so you may have to wait to be seated. The staff are amazing and handle your wait really well. We were seated and taken care of really quickly. It felt like the kind of place where locals drop in for a quiet pint on their way home from work before the evening crowd arrives. The staff were excellent--friendly, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. The food was very good (we failed to take photos because we were too busy enjoying it). As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to see the Impossible burger front and center on their menu; it was deliciously prepared with guacamole on a brioche bun, and not an afterthought on the menu. My companions both chose the Irish Beef Burger, and said it was excellent. One thing to know: this is a traditional Victorian pub, so cocktails aren't really part of the program. Expect beer, wine, or spirits rather than mixed drinks. In a place like this, that actually feels exactly right. Other pubs do serve mixed drinks. Sunday's after mass in the Dominican church, Paddy Dunnes's became for Brian and me a place to go, for an extension of the "Spirit". While still drinking coffee or a beer, the spirit of our hearts were lifted or we could just BE. No pun meant. We met genuine people, who welcomed each other and us and vice versa and we enjoyed each other's company and "genuine Irish Craic". We cared about each other, genuinly cared. Within a very short space of time of finding this 'Hub', there was a sudden serious illness and death of a woman, Mrs. Dunne, [we never had the privilage of meeting her]. We felt 'At Home' in Paddy Dunnes. It was never dull, the craic, the banter, winding each other up, the rows, god there were some mighty rows, difference of opinion, GAA, Athy, Castlemitchel, the ggs's ............We never came across so many men named John or Jo, but not young enough to have been called after JPII, but not old enough to have been called after John 23rd or John Kennedy. My Brian, my husband Brian, got cancer and died very suddenly in August 2012. Both Brians family and mine were around me. But we had another family, "The Paddy Dunne's Family". They were there at the church, they helped lift his coffin up the steps. Brian would have been chuffed. I was chuffed. Our families came back with me to Paddy Dunnes for Soup and sandwiches. Yeah did us proud. So for a Really Good Pint of Guinness or whatever you're having yourself!! It was really good and the locals that hang out there were all very friendly and came over to talk with everyone from our group once we finished eating. I asked the one local how many people lived in this tiny village and he said, "Not sure how many in the town, but there are 27 people and 3 dogs on this street". It was so awesome and felt like going back 100 years in time.
