We did the 6-week day training program at Canis with our 10-month-old Goldendoodle, Sonny, and had…read moresuch a wonderful experience!
Our main goals were to work on his recall and basic obedience. Before training, Sonny would pull on walks, get distracted by everything, and had pretty much no recall. He also had a hard time staying in one place, especially if we walked away from him. After six weeks, the difference is huge! He now knows sit, down, heel, stay, and place, and his recall has improved so much. We also did the City Dog and Nature Dog programs. We were initially skeptical about using an e-collar, but with the proper guidance from Canis, we've learned how helpful it can be.
Sonny is my first dog, and I always knew I wanted to get him professionally trained. I originally thought we'd send him to training, he'd learn everything, and that would be it. What I didn't realize was how much training I needed too haha. One of the biggest things I took away from this experience was learning how to properly handle Sonny and feeling so much more confident with him.
Our trainer, Kaitlyn, was absolutely amazing! Not only is she such a kind, funny, and sweet person, but she's also incredibly talented at what she does. Sonny absolutely loved her, and you could tell she genuinely cared about him. From the little nicknames she'd give him to how comfortable and happy he was around her, it really felt like she treated him as her own dog. She would also send us pictures and videos with updates on his training, which we always looked forward to. She was great at identifying the areas he struggled with, especially recall, and helping us understand how to work on them. We had SO many questions throughout the program, and she was always patient and happy to explain everything. We really couldn't have asked for a better trainer!
Another thing that really impressed us was the facility and the entire team. When we first started looking into dog training, we weren't sure whether to go with a private trainer or a training facility. After touring Canis, we felt really comfortable with our decision. Everything was so clean, organized, and professional, with plenty of space for the dogs to train, play, and board.
Since we dropped Sonny off every morning and picked him up in the evening, we got to know a lot of the staff. From the trainers and assistants to the receptionists, everyone was so kind and helpful. Even when Kaitlyn wasn't the one handling Sonny, we always felt comfortable knowing he was in good hands. You can tell Brent, the owner, does a great job with his team. The facility is always being cleaned, everyone is organized, and the whole place feels very welcoming.
Something else we really appreciated was the Sunday group lessons. Every week, the Canis team would go over what our dogs had learned and teach us how to practice everything ourselves. Kaitlyn was also there to answer any questions we had. I think this is such an important part of the program and something that really sets Canis apart. They don't just train your dog and send you home. They make sure you understand how to continue the training yourself.
Overall, we had such a great experience with Canis and couldn't recommend them enough. A huge thank you to Kaitlyn, Brent, and the entire team for taking such good care of Sonny and helping us become better dog owners. We're so happy with how far he's come and so proud of him!
