And the amazing warm homemade sourdough bread with the whipped garlic butter. Yes, I know it's a steak house and I didn't have steak but that French Onion Soup was just that outerworldly - rich carmelized onion base with a circle of bread and a thick gooey layer of melted gruyere = HEAVEN! I also had a bite of the ahi tuna appetizer ($14) and the firecracker shrimp (swimming in mayo), tasty but nothing noteworthy - hence a 4 star overall rating. I wish I could give half stars. Man I am so disappointed tonight. Showed up at 7pm on a Tuesday, got seated in a medium traffic area on a decent business night. Got our menus... and we waited. Not so much as a nod on glass of water for 20 minutes. Got up to leave and heard two young staffers arguing over who would get stuck with our table. Didn't even notice it was us leaving. You are one of ONLY steak houses in Spicewood for miles so get rid of the Booths. I felt like I was in a diner. The fish was inedible. Rubber. INEDIBLE and too salty.. Teach the staff how to serve a cup of hot water.. #1. Make sure water is HOT. #2. Serve on a saucer, NOT a plate. Had he spilled the cup we would be having a McDonalds scalding moment. #3. I had such a great experience here! The food was fantastic. What really made the night special, though, was our server, Zara. She was incredibly attentive, friendly, and made us feel genuinely welcomed from start to finish. She knew the menu well, had great recommendations, and checked in at all the right moments without being intrusive. You can tell she truly cares about the guest experience. Nice little steakhouse with a deck and space for the kids to run around on the grass. Our server was polite but he had to be flagged down for refill soda/beer/wine requests. We ordered the queso which was good but not really queso. It required a fork to cut into and heap onto the chips, which were tasty. Potato soup was chunky and topped with cheese and green onion. Our sweet Thai chili roasted Brussels were crispy and tangy without too much heat. My filet was delicious with a topping of carmelized onion, bacon and blue cheese. The last review I read was right on the mark! A "hidden gem"! We are new to the Spicewood area and just now trying out the neighborhood. We were driving down 71 and have see the sign many times and didn't think much of it but we were hungry and figured we would try and see if this could be a new "regular" place for us. The short answer is YES! Plenty of parking but I can imagine during summer months, it might be busier. It was a Saturday evening and we didn't need reservations but again, I suspect in warmer times, it might be better to check ahead instead of just walking in as we did. We were seated right away; it's a nice restaurant. A bit contemporary with a nice dining area and even an outdoor dining area. There's a bar area with several TV's playing sports and looks like a fun place to come for a quick bite and watch a game. The wine selection was pretty decent and even found a few that I have at home so it was nice to enjoy a glass. We started off with a few appetizers: we had the firecracker shrimp and the spinach artichoke dip. The shrimp dish was nice but as for the 'spicy' part, I would rate the spiciness as a "2" on a scale of 1-10. And I do agree with the previous reviewer who mentioned the quality of the dip being less than what one would expect. I don't recommend the spinach dip and hopefully they will try and improve this. I had the chopped salad which is there version I'm guessing is sort of like a wedge salad. It was good but it would be better if they just simply served it as a traditional wedge. The dressing was good. For entree's, we had the Rack of Lamb and the Prime Filet. The lamb was incredible and the filet was without question one of the best I've ever had. I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked to perfection with a nice pink center. Every single bite of that filet was just incredible! For sides, we had the grilled asparagus, sweet brussels and a baked potato. It's hard to serve a bad baked potato and this came loaded. The asparagus was excellent and the BEST brussel sprouts I've ever had. It's hard to believe but we did have a little room for dessert. The meal was spectacular, we figured why not try dessert. We tried the brownie sundae and the chocolate torte. The brownie is amazing and enough for two if you want to split a dessert. The chocolate torte is VERY decadent and if you are even questioning which to pick... choose this! I would come here just for a glass of red wine and the chocolate torte! Yes, there are a few items they could improve on, but it is unquestionably a 5 Star restaurant! Service was great, the ambiance and food were amazing. We are pretty excited to be living here knowing we have this place to frequent. Even if you live down in Austin, you won't regret the drive up to check out this amazing "hidden gem". read more

I can't say enough about this restaurant. The owner, Jen, is a wonderful person and very outgoing. Always puts the needs of her clientele first. Andrew, the bartender extraordinaire, can make any drink you ask for and is a wealth of knowledge. My particular favorite is the Lemon Butter Salmon. Ravin(our server) swooped in to save the day. She more than made up for the bumpy beginning of our dining experience (we were sat in an area no one was assigned). Ravin was super sweet and attentive. We were glad she was our server. I had the ribeye and the cheesy garlic mashed potatoes. Steak was cooked to perfection as I like it between medium and medium-well. The potatoes were pipping hot and flavorful, reminding me of a twice baked potato. Took a dessert to go, highly recommend the chocolate torte, so scrumptious. The atmosphere at the restaurant exceeded my expectations by having outside and inside seating. The outside seating gave a vibe of community. Why oh why did we wait so long to try this place! We had friends in town from out of state who wanted to go to a great Steakhouse so we decided to finally come here. So happy that we did. Everyone loved their steaks. I had the lamb and the Brussel sprouts. The Brussel sprouts were amazing, nicely roasted with a hint of sweetness from the seasoning. The lamb was also very good. 02/01/24 - This is an update to my prior reviews, and let me tell you J5 Steakhouse does not disappoint. The renovations they did a couple of years ago have made the restaurant feel more upscale, and if you get a chance to get a table in the room of "10,000 lights" definitely do it. The owners added these lights in the ceiling that look like the stars at night, it is really unique and adds to the ambiance of the restaurant. For this evening, we chose the pork piccata (hadnt had it in a while) with roasted brussel sprouts and the ribeye steak with a baked potato. What I love about the baked potato there is that the really salt the skin and it just tastes perfect! The brussel sprouts were perfect with the right combination of balsamic vinegar and they were excellent. The steak and the pork were cooked to perfection as expected. We also ordered the bread pudding, but forgot to take a picture of it since we took it to go. But it was excellent as well. The portions are very generous and we took home leftovers for the next day. The wait service is always top shelf, and the owner roams around and asks about the experience. All in all it was another tremendous evening with just amazing food. If you ever get up to Spicewood, please do dine here. You won't regret it. 5 stars for sure. read more

The service from what surely was local 20 somethings that were over the top polite and respectful- I'm accustomed to great service at the restaurants we frequent in DFW and Key West so it REALLY was special treatment to stand out so much - started with the French Onion Soup and the Bang Bang Shrimp - RIDICULOUSLY GREAT and I Mean outstanding!! If French Onion Soup is your thing like it is my wife's this one will be at the top of your best ever list. The Steaks (ribeye and filet medallions) were good as would be expected at a steak place. Maybe just a bad night but my pork piccata was over-cooked and tough--and my brussel sprouts were burned to a crisp. Not sure they are making that piccata out of pork tenderloin. My wife and I ordered majestic redfish. It was delicious! And cooked perfectly. I had the baked potato which was also cooked perfectly and delicious. Our server could not have been better. He did not hover yet he was promptly responsive to every need that we had. our food came hot from the kitchen. The ambience is country chic with a wall panel of corrugated roofing and wine bottle corks that was very interesting. Lights are low so it's I guess you would say romantic. I'm not a beef eater so have ordered salmon a few times.. The salmon is not very good. It is definitely not Wild Alaskan King Salmon, for sure; fishy tasting and probably farmed and frozen. Kind of pricy for the poor quality. Maybe the steak is better. Some of their sides are ok. It would be nice to have a really high quality restaurant in the area but there is no competition to demand it. Sorry to place such a poor review. The owners are pretty nice. Food is just not good/ my guess it's all frozen items cooked. The spinach dip is just weird. Looks like cheese that had spinach leaves mixed in. Never had any like that . Hamburger had no taste. Let me save you from waisting money. Can find a better steak at outback and half the price. The ahi shareable is laughable as a share. They give you one bite of seaweed salad and 5 pieces of tuna. That was ok. Had the ribeye and any establishment that automatically brings salt and pepper to you before your plate gets there should be a sign to not order steak here. Originally went for lamb but it's not on the menu. The beeswax old fashion was good and strong, about the only positive. Service was cold. Great food, good service, ambiance ok, but I left my credit card somewhere that night and they will not answer their phone, or even take a message, which means I have to drive over an hour to check to see if it's there. I have a lot of choices to get a good dining experience that aren't reticent about answering their phone. If an emergency required I contact the place it would be impossible. Stopped by this week and was great experience. We moved to the area 3 years ago and have driven by many times. Decided to go for my birthday dinner. We enjoyed a salad and I ordered medallions of beef and my wife had a 8oz prime filet that was cooked perfectly. Also notable is the wine list and the cabernets from central California - Paso Robles, that can be ordered by the glass or bottle. The service was great as well!!! Next trip we will try the seafood dishes and the white wines. They have an extensive bar and also outdoor area and once the temperature drops out of the 100's we will look forward to dining there. read more
