I don't write many reviews and had to do a google search on how to make a Yelp review, but a recent visit to JR's Rhodehouse BBQ in the Rapid City area compelled me to share our experience. To set this up, we love TexMex and BBQ foods. We have sampled the best BBQ in Memphis, KC and all of Texas and appreciate great TexMex and BBQ. Central Texas has, in my opinion, the best of both. However, yesterday, we 3 senior couples met at JR's Rhodehouse for the first time to try their BBQ. Being 6 adults, we chose to order "The 1/2 Gout" from the menu, a platter of Brisket, Pork, Turkey, Links, & Ribs plus 2 pints of sides of your choosing, a perfect assortment of the menu items. Wow! Bottom line: It was as good as any BBQ we have ever tasted. I saw the brisket as it came from the smoker - perfectly cooked, very juicy and tender - one of the best ever... The rest of the meats were excellent also. We have found a SD BBQ joint that compares equally well with the best of Memphis, KC and TX - and local to the Rapid City area. We met JR, the owner and his wife - friendly and proud of their accomplishments in the BBQ business. The staff was very friendly, the beer selection was good and cold, and the prices were very fair. All that said, we will be a regular customer and when the BBQ craving pops up, we will gather friends and neighbors and head to JR's Rhodehouse for another great meal. I encourage you to do the same. Thanks, JR and crew for bring the best of Texas BBQ to South Dakota! read more

Since a bbq place is all about the meat, this place gets five stars. As good of bbq as I've ever had and also at a pretty good price. You won't be disappointed. My only complaint would be that they don't do French fries or green beans but that's minor. Very friendly staff as well. read more

Amazing bbq, authentic Texas flavor. Fun atmosphere, and good prices. I recommend the Gout plate. You get a great variety of meats and two nice proportions for sides. read more

Amazing! JR's catered our daughter's wedding this past weekend at Pine Haven Venue. As mother of the bride I was a little nervous how it was all going to turn out. We couldn't have asked for anything better. The food was amazing. I had guests tell me it was the best wedding food they ever had! The grooms family and many guests from Texas said shocked how good the BBQ was in SD. I'm truly happy with how it all turned out. Thank you JR, highly recommend!! read more

Worth the drive out to eat here! It's not far from rapid city, best BBQ we've had so far, and I'm not just saying that because it's Texas BBQ and I'm originally from Texas. It's a order at the front, pick up your food, and seat yourself. Pretty cozy, not much space inside. When they sell out, they are out so get there early! I got the two meat platter with brisket and hot sausage link, potato salad and Mac and cheese. It was all tremendous! We will be back. read more

J.R.'s Rhodehouse BBQ PIT - 2 Meat - Caterers Near Me - Summerset, South Dakota

I just moved here to the Somerset area and this town just so happens to have the best darn barbecue restaurant in ALL states. Hands-down the best I've ever had anyway. They're only open 4-days a week so everything is fresh, tender, and cooked to perfection! I recommend coming on Friday when they have 1 pound cuts of beef short rib. It melts in your mouth for real. read more

Stopped in for supper after a beautiful drive through Spearfish Canyon, and JR's was a great experience. My wife and I shared a 3 meat plate, and it was fantastic. Runs were perfect, turkey was moist and smokey, and the brisket was some of the best I've ever had. Mac n cheese was a little too spicy for my wife, but I loved it, and the potato salad was on point. Fun vibe, great food. We definitely recommend! read more

Order: Sliced brisket meat platter with mac n cheese, smokehouse beans, and white bread Excellent, juicy, flavorful BBQ with delicious sides and a wonderful staff. Great midwestern saloon ambiance and decoration to supplement the overall vibe. As someone from NC, this is HIGHLY comparable to Southern BBQ. Sauce is for sure ketchup based, so be aware if you prefer vinegar or mustard base. The mac was thick, creamy and savory and the smokehouse beans had a great balance - both are a must! Pro tip: ask for the ghost pepper barbecue sauce if you like a little heat kick! read more

J.R.'s Rhodehouse BBQ PIT - Brisket, Mac-N-Cheese, Smokehouse Beans - Caterers Near Me - Summerset, South Dakota

Insanely delicious BBQ! Pro tip: get there as soon as they open at 11 to get first dibs on the day's offerings -- you won't be sorry you did. We went there on a Friday for lunch right when they opened and within 15 minutes there was a line almost out the door. We tried the pulled pork sandwich and rib special. You could taste the Smokey flavor in every bite and the meat melted in our mouths. The jalapeño Mac and cheese was also perfectly creamy with a touch of heat. Such a great place with excellent food and friendly service. read more

I love this place! I was driving from Wisconsin to Oakland, California to visit my son. I was thinking there should be some decent BBQ in the area. I did search and Jr's Those house was at the top of the list... As it absolutely should be! I had to follow my map directions, as Jr's is not brightly lit on the outside. But once I found it, I was absolutely delighted. There is not one fancy thing about this place, but their love of good food and good folks is obvious the minute you step through their door. I'm an older woman, and was traveling by myself, but I felt totally welcome in Jr's. They helped me figure out the menu, made great suggestions for sides, and were so helpful. Their food was amazing. I ordered a, and was astounded at the amount of food I received. I'd asked for a brisket and chopped pork. Their servings were massive and absolutely delicious. Staff were wonderful! The food was amazing. Both the brisket and pork were incredibly flavorful. It was enough food to feed me for 3 days! This place isn't obvious, flashy, or obvious. But if you're looking for a down-to-earth place with fabulous food, terrific staff, and even good prices... Don't miss this place. If I could give it 10 stars I would. read more

Best BBQ I have had in SD! I had the hot link sandwich and the others had the pulled pork sandwich and they are really critical of BBq being from Nc but raved about the pork at JR's. The hot link was excellent one of the best I e had out of a restaurant and boy serve genius on the sandwich!!! We all had the smokehouse beans as a side and an extra side of slaw which was actually home made. All the sides were good but what was excellent were their self serve garnishments of thick cut pickled that had a slight bite and a good mild garlic flavor and the quick pickled onions which I never eat non cooked onions but I couldn't stop with these. I know in the future I can't resist the hot link so when I want to try other items I guess I'll just have to get a combo plate. read more

Really good BBQ the way 1/2 gout is perfect for a group of about 3-4 people best way to try all the meats with some sides. The BBq sauce is the only thing that doesn't hold up compared to the really good meat. The Mac and cheese is a MUST ! If the owners read this please think about a different or better BBq sauce!!!!!! read more

I thought the best bbq I had was in Memphis or Texas, but alas, it's in the west! Pork ribs so sweet, you don't need sauce and baked beans are accompanied by an addictive smoky flavor that confuses you whether to snort or eat it! Good times--Bryan O'Brien read more

J.R.'s Rhodehouse BBQ PIT - JR's Beef Ribs on a Friday Night! - Caterers Near Me - Summerset, South Dakota

The best BBQ in the Rapid City area can be found here. I have traveled the country eating BBQ in some of the highest rated joints and J. R.'s is right there with them. The pulled pork was very good. Moist and tender with a little smoke. The pork ribs are some of the best that I have eaten. Served dry, as ribs should be, as to be able to taste the meat. Next was the smoked turkey. I do not know how a piece of white turkey can be so tender and juicy. The beef brisket was good, but not the best that I have tried. The two sauces that were served on the side were good. The mild still had a kick and was too spicy for mom. The hot was very good as I like to know that I am eating something. FYI, I only used the sauce with the brisket. The sides were very tasty. We had the coleslaw, mac and cheese along with the baked beans. The staff was friendly and helpful. They have beer. I can't wait to r read more

This place confirms my premise that the best barbeque comes from some of the smallest and out of the way places. I grew up in in Texas, so I'm used to good brisket. Unfortunately, it is rare to find good brisket outside of there. I've tried it in many other places and this is this first place that hits the mark. Wow. It was like being back home! Juicy, tender, melt-in-your-mouth brisket!! We also had the ribs and sausage. They were both good, but the brisket is definitely the king of the roost here! read more

Amazing BBQ! Had the 3 meat with brisket, hot links, and ribs. Beans and Mac & Cheese for sides. Everything was delicious! Some of the best, if not the best, bbq I've had. Mac & Cheese is a little spicy, which I loved, but if that's not your thing then just a heads up. read more

Wow, the greatest Brisket I've had in a long time! My Dad had the pulled pork, it was tender and flavorful. The sides were good as well.

food is fresh, bbq at it's finest. Staff is very friendly. Check their daily specials,as they sell out.

A random stop on a random road trip, has turned into a bbq joint I dream about! Best potato salad ever! Recommended x10!

Excellent quality bbq. If you like meat this is the place to be. Good price. Locals love it. We ordered Pulled pork: good sweet, beef ribs: so tender and tasty. A little salty on the bark but that's how most smoked meats are ( I just scraped it off). And sliced brisket: this is the bomb!!! Very balanced flavor. Beans on the side has Smokey flavor. Good coleslaw. Awesome people Gives military discount as well read more

Don't eat here. Someone was literally coughing as they walked in while I was there. No social distancing. This place does not care about what's going on. Families eating in the lobby, it's disrespectful to 1st responders and health care workers, and irresponsible to members of the community. It's also a hazard to workers. Go to Dickey's. At least they have the decency to take preventative measures for their customers. read more

Excellent BBQ and awesome staff. While the pulled pork was great (moist, tender, with bits of bark), the smoked turkey was hands down the best we have ever had, this From someone who has eaten their fair share of BBQ and babysat a few briskets, butts, and birds in the smoker. The mac n cheese was flavorful and had just the right amount of kick. We held our son's rehearsal dinner in their back room and the owners took Great personal care of our entire party. The portions were generous and no one left hungry. If you are looking for great BBQ or a place to hold a dinner or party..go no further than here!!! My only regret is that I never got to try their brisket or sausage......hopefully it won't be too long before I get back to Rapid City. read more

I went for dinner with my husband tonight to the new place in the neighborhood. The bbq is amazing. The meat is artfully made, juicy (don't need the bbq sauce because it isn't dry!) and flavorful. I might take it to go next time and have it with some other beer though. We tried the turkey, pulled pork & brisket. It was all amazing. The sides of Mac & cheese (pretty spicy!) and potato salad- were also delicious classics. I would expect to pay that price point for that quality of food. The staff was friendly, it was clean. Good stuff all around. Really impressive for off the interstate in SD. Now located @ 7201 Infinity Drive, Summerset. read more

We went there last night for an early dinner around 430. The service was great. The portions were huge and you have to try the hot honey sauce, ask Justin for some. The brisket was full of flavor, the Turkey was super tender and amazing, the spicy kielbasa was wow and the pulled pork sandwich on the sweet bun was insanely good. The bbq sauce is mild too. The Mac n cheese has a secret ingredient, see if you can identify it! Finally the corn bread muffins had so much flavor. Seriously some dang good Q! Keep it up Justin read more

Go on Friday. Get the beef rib. You're welcome. This place is a hidden gem. I'm glad I stumbled upon it for sure.

Great Texas style BBQ. Friday special is a bone-in beef rib, 1lb+, whole lotta meat. Was as good as any I've had on my Texas BBQ tour. Really liked the Mac N' Cheese. If you must, the sauce was tasty (a no-no in most Texas places). Dog friendly covered patio, little rough but ok. Cold beer. Pickled onions and spicy pickle's, jalapeños, at self-serve bar. Friendly staff, limited hours check before going. read more

OMG!!! I HAD NO IDEA I LOVED BBQ. I've been to dickeys, they are the taco bell of BBQ. J.R's is amazing the brisket had a good ratio or fat and meat unlike dickeys were you get an entire bite of fat. The Mac is so thick and creamy with a pinch of heat. They forgot my ribs, but that's such an afterthought because of the brisket. I'll be there tomorrow. Great to see authentic BBQ in the black hills. read more

Insanely great Texas style BBQ that is up there with Franklin's and Lewis BBQ. The prices are amazing, incredible value. I loved everything I ate, but especially the ribs.
