Famous Tavern Fried Chicken from the buffet
Wanda H.

The food here is really good. The cocktails are delicious. The really old building is fantastic. Doing a buffet when there are shows at the theater is smart on their part. What isn't smart is not letting customers know when you're open! Nothing on the door. Nothing on the answering machine. And what's posted on the website is misleading or incorrect. Just bad business.

Great, rustic building in the heart of Arrow Rock, Mo serving some classic American fare. Conveniently located near the Lyceum theatre. Overall, decent menu selection, with a fairly young and friendly waitstaff, at least this night. Overall rating: 3.5/5 Called ahead for reservationists and the table was ready, just as expected. We were promptly seated. Drink options do not include alcohol, which was fine for us. Service was a bit slow, even though they didn't seem to be exceptionally busy. I chalk it up to inexperienced servers... I suspect it's hard to find staff in such a small town. Food included: - Pot Roast: GET THIS! Best bite at the table. The beef was rich in flavor. Lots of roast gravy for the potatoes and carrots (our choice). 4.5/5 - Chicken and Mac: Very mild cheese sauce. Good, hand made chicken strips. Mac and cheese was not very warm. 3.25/5 - Famous Tavern Fried Chicken: Breading was very well seasoned. Served with one leg and two thighs. Would have preferred one breast in there. Mashed potatoes and white gravy was decent. Thankfully, a good pepper shaker was nearby. 3.75/4 - Fried Pork Tenderloin: While the chicken had very well seasoned breading, the breading on the tenderloin was under seasoned. Adding salt and pepper helped. Would have liked the tenderloin to be pounded thinner to make it a bit more tender. 3.25/5

Great lunch buffet of fried chicken and REAL mashed potatoes. Everything is homemade from scratch! No premade or frozen meals. Great history, service and ambience.

My mom made reservations at Catalpa a few months earlier to get the chef's table and we all had a wonderful time. The food was all absolutely top notch and perfectly prepared and presented. The timing of the courses was flawless and the staff was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. There were four of us and we shared 2 appetizers, the spanakopita and the pork shank. Each of us had the salad, an entree, dessert, and a dinner roll. The sangrias and featured cocktail were also delicious. I had the roasted duck and the others had the lamb rack, tortellini with shrimp, and salmon. We shared two desserts, the lemon pound cake and the affogato. Everything was really great and I'm confident anything off the menu would be the same. Also, we had plenty of leftovers for a salmon and shrimp omelette the next day and I'm sure my mom will put the lamb to some good use. I loved my duck so there was none to take home! They give you PLENTY to eat!! Thanks to Liz and her staff for an evening to remember.

Beckett's would do well in any large city so it's surprising to find this gem in a fairly remote…read moreMissouri River town of 1,100 people accessible only by 2-lane state and county rural roads. Its old time brick and wood exterior is architecturally interesting and flawless as is the interior with its beautiful pressed tin high ceiling, polished dark wood floors and perfect furnishings. The huge stainless steel hood over the grill behind the bar adds to simple/sophisticated feel. This is a restaurant review so I guess I should mention the food and wait staff. My arrival was immediately acknowledged and I was directed to a table. My waitress took my drink order a minute or two later and my Blue Moon beer arrived with an orange slice so fresh that the orange could have have just been picked and sliced. The menu is reasonably extensive and includes local and California wines. I ordered the grilled chicken dinner which came with two sides and Texas toast ... I chose salad and a baked potato. The salad was generous and included multiple varieties of fresh lettuce - it was perfect and a great start. The grilled chicken was very nice - juicy with a slightly crisp exterior. Toppings for the baked potato (sour cream and butter) were served on the side as was the salad dressing. I rarely have dessert but I made an exception since dinner had been so pleasant and I wanted to linger. Carrot cake and coffee were the perfect ending. I see that I used the word "perfect" maybe too many times in this review. But similar to what another reviewer said, if I could have my own restaurant, Beckett's would be the one. Beckett's requires quite a detour from my normal faster route to visit family but I'll be back there soon.

Great restaurant that has been around for a long time. If…read moreyou order a burger, get it cooked about medium or mid rare, it's much better than the well done that's normally done. The catfish on Friday nights is really crisp but not greasy. And sourced from I think Mississippi. The baked potato comes completely loaded if you ask. My family tends to gather here. Cute little place.
