It can be surprisingly hard to find someone to do this kind of haircut (long fine hair) in the East Bay, but Irina really listens to the look you're going for. Her recommendations are always specific to your hair type, and I leave feeling less like I always have bedhead and more like I could be an art gallery girl in west village (iykyk).

We were having an 87-degree day in West Berkeley, which -- for those unfamiliar -- is hot for West Berkeley, a neighborhood where the default setting is breezy and cloudy and lovely and sixty-three degrees, the kind of microclimate that lets you own one jacket and never think about it. Eighty-seven degrees in West Berkeley is an event. Eighty-seven degrees with hair that's two weeks past due is a crisis. I have Asian hair. I've written about this before. It is coarse and thick and grows outward like a porcupine asserting its personal space, and my coping mechanism in Los Angeles was to throw $85 at a hipster barbershop every three weeks to make it stop. This worked in the way that all expensive coping mechanisms work -- reliably, but at a cost that quietly compounds until one day you do the annual math and feel ill. 2026 being what it is, and a dollar these days being asked to do about a dollar forty's worth of work, I needed a new tack. I asked an AI assistant for a good cheap haircut in Berkeley and got several suggestions, which I then searched on Yelp -- yes, the very Yelp you are looking at, imagine that -- for reviews. One thing I noticed about La Petite was that people mentioned Asian women cutting hair there, and the photos confirmed it. I had a thought, the kind of thought that sounds reductive when you say it out loud but is grounded in lived experience: Asian women probably know how to deal with hair like mine. This is not a stereotype. This is pattern recognition developed over decades of watching non-Asian barbers stare at my head with the quiet bewilderment of someone asked to solve a math problem in a language they don't speak. No shade intended, just facts. So I gave La Petite a go. You watch closely when someone new is cutting your hair. You can't help it. You're tracking every snip in the mirror, reading their hands the way you'd read a stranger's driving in the first five minutes of a road trip -- are we safe here, does this person know what they're doing, should I have said something three turns ago. About halfway through, I watched her take volume out of my hair in a way that hadn't been done in years -- not just trimming the length but actually understanding the architecture of thick Asian hair, where the bulk lives, how it falls, how it will eventually grow out, where it needs to be thinned so it lies flat instead of projecting horizontally from your skull like it's staging a protest. She knew. I knew she knew. I had my new stylist. Twenty-eight dollars. Twenty-eight dollars, and I walked out with the best haircut I've had in longer than I'd like to admit. That's $57 left over from what I was paying in LA -- enough to buy groceries, or three martinis at happy hour, or a pizza at June's, or whatever you buy when you realize you've been dramatically overpaying for a basic human service because you confused a cool neighborhood and exposed brick with competence. La Petite has neither exposed brick nor a cocktail menu. What it has is someone who looked at my difficult hair and knew exactly what to do with it, which is the only thing that has ever mattered and the only thing I'm paying for from now on.

They asked me if I was graduating, and I said no, I was meeting my fiancée's mom the next day. Five minutes before the haircut was finished, the stylist took a big chunk off my right sideburn. She cut it too high, which ruined the whole haircut, especially since my face shape doesn't suit short sideburns. I told her I didn't like it. I didn't overreact or yell, I was just uncomfortable. The hairdresser said, "Too bad!" and tried to dismiss the issue. I told her again that she should have asked me about the length. She then took it personally and told her boss that I was making things up so I wouldn't pay, saying, "They do this so they don't pay." What do you mean by "they"? Not only did I feel dismissed and treated unprofessionally, but also disrespected. I was upset after the whole situation, but even then I was willing to pay and didn't want to leave without paying because I didn't want to prove her point. Plus, it's not that expensive. At the end, the stylist said she had 40 years of experience. Well, after this, it feels like you wasted 40 years and somehow skipped the basics of customer service. Not coming back, even after being offered a free haircut. I would rather pay three times what I paid today for a standard service where you're treated with basic courtesy.

Once you rinsed out the bleach and saw how bad it looked, you didn't stop what you were doing to share what had happened. Instead of showing me the results, you applied a super-hot curling wand to give me a big hairstyle so I wouldn't notice the highlights. The wand on the new bleach left it with intense heat damage. The hair is falling out as I write this and my whole head stinks of burnt hair. This did not need to happen - you could have simply told me the truth, that you have no idea what you're doing with blonde highlights, and I would have been able to find someone who does, and my hair would still be healthy right now. Please let me be the last person this happens to.

So...let me understand: businesses and their employees / staff can act / behave anyway THEY PLEASE, and take your money...and yelp reviewers are not allowed to post TRUTHFUL accounts and reviews as recipients of rude and unprofessional services and behaviors from businesses...and those they employ or contract with... Great double standard, yelp. I had a 30 year client - business relationship w/ Peter Thomas Hair Design in Berkeley, CA - 20 years of which I was with one of their "Master Stylists." I discontinued going to this salon, and this one Master Stylist because they were unprofessional, aggressive...and lacked boundaries. When I have booked an appointment that costs $200.00+ and I have put my trust in the salon, and a client - stylist relationship for 2 decades, (sticking w/ one stylist for 20 years there) then when one day I am sitting in the chair during a costly appointment, which has zero to do with aptitude or ability of the stylist, but has everything to do with the stylist's rudeness, lack of boundaries, and aggressiveness, as well as intrusiveness, then I am officially OUT...I am DONE with you: As I was sitting in this Master Stylist's chair, they ask me about a high profile case that occurred in Oakland, CA and involved large numbers of multiple law enforcement agencies...this Master Stylist began to ask multiple questions then about national high profile cases that I refused to discuss because 1.) I was not there, I did not witness any of these situations, 2.) I was trying to relax and enjoy my time, and HOW I SPEND MY MONEY & TIME AT SAID SALON, which is my business and choice...the Master Stylist proceeded to badger me about these things saying they "Ask all their clients these questions..." So What...I reserve my right not to engage in any conversation on any subject matter I choose...yet my boundaries were ignored over & over by this Master Stylist...apparently this person couldn't handle my reply when I said, "I wasn't there, I don't play Monday morning quarterback and allow the media to guide my thoughts...I gave you my reply, and opinion...I wasn't there...and I don't wish to discuss this, please respect that..." Nope...they didn't, they just continued to push...so the remainder of the appointment continued w/o conversation, as it was my hair, my money, and my time. I left a good tip too...because again, this had nothing to do w/ this stylists aptitude or ability as a stylist...but that generous tip also went ignored because of what took place some time later... I was polite, but firm...after 20 years, if a person wants to suddenly blow past my personal boundaries, and can't handle it, it says more about them than me...then I am done w/ you. Plus...it's obvious they were stressing about personal things because they wreaked of cigarette smoke, and that was horrible for me as I have asthma, which they knew...and the odor coming from them was bad...no one wants to sit through an appointment smelling that...the close proximity of the situation did not allow for NOT being subjected to the foul cigarette odor...and this stylist also has asthma, I know this because remember, I had known them for 20 years, so the only reason they would be smoking was due to stress...and it was evident because I endured complaining about one of their kids for more than 30 minutes...I came to relax and get my hair done...I just wanted peace, and a nice relaxing appointment. Then, some time later after above incident, 1 - 2 years later I go back to get a gift certificate for someone who goes to the same salon; I had no issue w/ that, and it was w/ same stylist - again, no issue giving a gift to someone else who wants to go there, and see same stylist. As I am walking up the stairs into the salon, I see the very Master Stylist coming down same stairs, who I quit for reasons above, and I said not a word, only THEY couldn't help themselves, and they rudely said: "WHAT are you doing here?" Yet again, inability to have any self control...Really? Yes, really...So I leave this same word of advice for this stylist and the owner Peter Thomas: Teach your stylists manners, boundaries and professionalism...clearly longterm clients are not valued. I dropped another $200.00 on that gift certificate...and I was polite and kind...My NOT saying anything in response to this stylist's demanding "WHAT are you doing here..." was a kindness...btw...I had a task, saw it through w/ self control and grace and then once again was treated with a temper tantrum, and zero boundaries or accountability... Yelp...stop removing honest reviews, and stop removing honest reviews from YEARS AGO...if businesses and so-called professionals can't figure out boundaries and good deportment, and can't handle the truth...then take etiquette lessons and get therapy. That goes for yelp too...who clearly sides with businesses...

After 18 months of sporting a fuchsia pink bob (originally done by the incredibly talented @SarahDidaHair, check her out too!), I threw Shannon a major curve ball, and asked her to take it all out and make me blonde! Right away she eloquently informed me of all the risks associated with such a major color change (such as your hair melting off), and after expertly lifting a test strand, we made the educated and informed decision to go for it. For years I have been asking stylists for a past the shoulder, short multi-layered and feathered look that is considered an 80's style. It is a cross between a Farrah Faucet and a shag cut. Whenever I went to stylists they would give me a very long layered smooth look, which is not what I asked for. I wanted something with multiple short layers throughout so that my hair would have more body and volume. Either the stylists did not know what I was talking about, they didn't want to take the time, or they didn't have the skill set. Ella understood EXACTLY what I wanted and did it! Plus, she charged me only $65 for a haircut that took over 1 hour. No need to go anywhere else, now that I have found Ella!

My Cosmetologist, the young, adorable Alex with his denim apron, dark curls, and easy-going charm made me feel right at home. Whew. And Alex didn't even flinch as he looked at my long neglected straight mop. I gave him very little direction (because I'm clueless) other than to cut it, add highlights, and go low maintenance because I am a slacker and go months without a haircut. Great haircut...a couple of hours later, after a lovely conversation and hot tea, I have lovely light brown-to-golden-blond soft balliaged loose waves at shoulder-length. Perfect. Such finesse...Alex specializes in blow-outs...so the finished look is polished but natural. I admit it..I had fun! So please add Right Angle and Alex to your bucket list!
