I've just moved here and as an avid cook I wanted to befriend a good local butcher…read more Well, these guys didn't disappoint. From having a 5 min healthy discussion on preferences of wing-tip sirloin and ribs of beef I was given a sneeky peep round the back. These guys provide the beef for the best steak places in Glasgow. I'd eaten at one of them earlier in the week and my eyes were bulging at the trays of chateaubriands and rib in sirloins. So, as you'd expect, their meat is very well sourced and as good as you're going to get anywhere. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing. Week after I wanted a lamb rump as I had the hunger for some dauphinoise. They were happy just to prep some up straight away, no fuss. The lamb was delicious........as was the dauph ;) ........and the sausages. Get the Italian fennel ones and slow cook cook them in your tomato sauce for pasta. Very, very impressive. Prices are as you'd expect for meat of this quality. Look on the window for weekly £10 deals. Steak and chicken. Well worth it.

Walk by often enough, but was compelled to go in today noticing the £10 offer which includes 2 sirloin steaks, 2 pork loins, 4 steak lorne sausages and 4 pork sausages. And if that doesn't make you want to go as well, you're either a vegetarian, or just plain ole crazy (yes, those are different). Nice decor, welcoming, with a good layout and professional staff. Excellent selection of all sorts, including lamb burgers that are absolutely getting destroyed next visit. Delighted with my purchase today and will return. Enough said.

My dad told me pay a visit to this butchers after buying a piece of machinery from them for our bakery and then finding out how much AWARD WINNING produce they have! I got told to get the award winning bacon and Cumberland Sausages. So, in we walk and I have never seen so many award winning signs in my life! What to choose??? Let's start with the Cumberland sausages - two kinds, both please! And then to the choice of bacon, well, how do people choose?? We opted for the black treacle cured back bacon (award winning obviously) and Adam Y chose the oak smoked back bacon. All the bacon was boasting not to leave that nasty white stuff in your pan. While we were here we picked up some award winning pies too. Pork Pie, Peppered Steak Pie and Chicken Pie. All of which looked perfect (coming from a baker, that's a HUGE compliment) and i am told they tasted just as good! The service we received whilst in the shop was second to none. Enough said. If you are ever passing Windermere town (and you eat meat) you must pay Huddlestons a visit! x

'The most memorable thing about Windemere was a "Cornish" pasty I bought from Huddlestone's Butchers in Windemere. It was so good I returned to the shop to tell them so, and the man said he had obtained the recipe from an old friend of his in Cornwall, who had recently retired, and finally parted with his secret recipe. So if you are in the Lake District, and craving for a "genuine" Cornish pasty, go along to Huddlestone's Butchers in The Avenue, Windemere.' I am so pleased that they have been recognised as the 'Premier' in 2016. Congratulations to all at Huddlestones. And yes, I can still remember how good it was. And I still live in Cornwall. Great wee shop on Overton Farm!…read more My guy, some friends of ours and I yearly, visit Overton Farm for their Point to Point Horse races. The past two years have been absolutely gorgeous and we've had an amazing time. The farm sets up a track in their grass fields and the day starts off with the pony horses and then the main event with at least 8 races for the day. There are bookies set up if you want to get your bets in for each race, and there is a bar and a wee cafe set up as well. At the front of the farm is the Overton Farm Shop & Butchery which has a wide variety of goods to purchase on the day as well as every other day. It's quite a small shop, but there are loads of delicious meats and fresh eggs, baked goods and basic kitchen staples. I stopped in for some snacks to enjoy during the races and left with a bag of locally baked biscuits, 4 bags of crisps, a bag of Hanover Pretzel Pieces (YES) and a diet irn bru. The line was out the door the day I went in, because of the horse race, but the staff were just as friendly as ever helping everyone make their way in and out in no time. Make sure you bring cash just in case as there is no ATM on the premises. Although they do have a card machine, the signal in the area is very hit or miss, so the machine was down the day I was there. If we lived in the area, we would shop here all the time for sure, but once a year will have to do it for us. Love this wee shop.

When I visited on a lunchtime in late November, the place was packed with locals, no doubt taking the opportunity to get out and about following the recent Biblical downpour. As you'd expect there's plenty of meat on the menu: an 8oz Gammon Steak; Cumberland Sausage with mash and red onion marmalade; an 8oz steak burger with streaky bacon and home made chips. Each of these costs £8.45. For £10.25 you can try the 'Cranstons' Local Platter, which features pastrami, roast ham and smoked pork loin. I was told that the soup of the day was parsnip and banana. I gave this a miss and opted for Chicken and Mediterranean Vegetable Terrine with tomato and olive chutney. It played safe, in my opinion, and would have benefited from a more imaginative accompaniment. A nod to vegetarians comes in the form of Grilled Goats Cheese & Pickled Beetroot Salad and Quiche of the Day. But I think a vegetarian in Cumbria is someone who has resolved not to eat meat between meals. The café is bright, spacious and unfussily furnished. The tall windows offer panoramic views of the lowering skies over the northern fells. On the opposite wall, a water-painting depicts a more benign riparian scene.
