Country Shop - Individual steak pie

I respect a business which is gallus enough to have a sign proclaiming "Best Steak Pies in Glasgow"…read morein their window. I was drawn in by that immediately and knew that a steak pie would be on the menu in our house that night. First up, this is probably one of the friendliest shops I've been in. And in Glasgow, where most people are super-friendly as standard, that's saying something. The butcher had loads of chat/banter and was really helpful and kind. He knew customers names (not mine, I've never been there before and I assume he isn't psychic) and generally had a really warm demeanour that would make me return just for the chat. Onto the pie. I ended up buying 2 individual steak pies and 2 chicken pies (he was a good up-seller, too) for just over £6 which I thought was a really good price. I forgot to ask him how long they needed in the oven but with the help of Chef Google, I stuck them in for 20 minutes at 180 which was perfect. And my, what delicious pies they were. Properly filled with nice chunky bits of steak and a delicious gravy, I'm not sure I can remember having a better pie. The pastry was lovely and they were a great size for dinner. Will I go on a mission to see if they really are the best steak pies in Glasgow? Probably not - now I've discovered here I'm not sure that I'd bother going anywhere else.

Though not my closest butchers, I do enjoy investigating new places in and around Glasgow -…read moreparticularly butchers. While, doing so I especially take pleasure in 'investigating' their steak pies. It's kinda a foodie fetish. In a nice, wholesome good girl way. Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised with this butcher's (though admittedly it doesn't take all that much to win me over when I know I'll have a full belly within a couple of hours - if that). It is fairly small which gives it a cosy, friendly and homely feel reminiscent of my Grandma's kitchen when she used to rustle up mince and tatties. This buyer friendly atmosphere is really helped by the chatty staff who are more than happy to provide cooking tips for marinading cuts of meat or recommending the best cut choices and cooking methods/times. Indeed, if it wasn't for receiving this well founded advice, I am certain I could very simply ruin even a 'stick in the oven' steak pie. Just ask the boy... Now, onto the steak pie. Mmmm. It is delicious. There are a range of sizes so you can have a small one to do you for a tasty dinner treat or a massive one to do a traditional dinner party or pretend to the folks that you've actually learnt how to cook. Either way, it's a good idea. The meat is really tender; the sauce thick, savoury and most importantly not too salty and the crust just perfect. If steak pie isn't your thing (???) they also have a good range of other meat products as Eleanor mentions as well as poultry, seasonal game and fresh rolls.

Popped in on a total whim to get prawns after shopping at Whole Foods, as I'd heard that the seafood is a lot more reasonable here. I like that they have some of the fresh seafood displayed for you to choose from and you just need to ask for what you're looking for if it isn't there. They also sell frozen stuff, poultry as well as fruit & veg out the front. The guy helping me was nice, but not overly friendly. He went out the back to get out the prawns (fresh, not sure where they were from) which were huge, coming in at about 60 grams and around £1.20 each. I got 5, which was around £9 and only afterwards when I calculated how much per kilo these were, I realised I might have been better off getting them at Whole Foods or another supermarket. Positives were that the prawns were huge, really meaty and smelt/looked really fresh as well. After cooking them on the grill for a few minutes I used a couple in my lunch (rice paper rolls) and then ate the others as nature intended - with lemon. Can't fault the flavour as it was really delicious, not like those bland small prawns (shrimp) you get elsewhere. I just can't see myself returning to pay that much money for prawns, apart from maybe at Christmas time (Australian tradition).

The sign in the window that says "unsupervised children will be sold" ... My kind of people. I stopped here to grab a steak rather than getting it from M&S. The butcher was helpful and friendly, happy to weigh my selected piece and give me a price before I committed to buying. Yup, I'm sure they're pricier than M&S and Asda but sometimes I'm happy to stretch the pennies. They have steak pies here which look really good, and a huge range of meats in the chillers. They also sell sauces and condiments so if you're having a bank holiday BBQ, they're worth a visit.

There's an art to cutting and presenting meat and this place has got it. Along with the usual mix of slice, beef, chicken, etc there is an impressive array of pies and pasties with a mix of ingredients to add a touch of class to them. Some of their own sausages (such as the sweet chilli sizzler and the Lorraine sizzler) are to die for! Oh yes. A great selection of preserves, sauces, dried pulses, herbs, and other ingredients means there can be little reason to go anywhere else for your meal. The staff are friendly, knowledgable and very good at their job. As with most butchers these days they're a little more expensive than supermarkets but you get what you pay for and this butcher is definitely worth the little bit extra.

Everything here is pretty cheap compared to the local supermarkets, and even if it isn't always much cheaper, the produce is certainly of a good and consistent quality. Sometimes their peppers are a bit dodgy, but on the whole everything is pretty decent from here. The staff are also really friendly and willing to listen to their customers. A while ago I asked if they stocked sweet potatoes, which they replied: "We used to, but there wasn't much market for them, but if you want some we can order them in!" And they did :) So don't be put off it you can't find more exotic fruit and veg, if you're simply looking for some good potatoes or fresh apples and strawberries, it's definitely worth going to J&B's if you live nearby.
