Right off Highway 580, there was a convenient parking area where visitors could park and take a short walk to the overlook. Although the falls were viewed from a distance, the sight was still absolutely breathtaking and well worth the stop. I also appreciated seeing the Wailua Heritage Trail sign, which shared meaningful history and cultural background about ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls and the Wailua River Valley. It added a thoughtful and educational element to the visit. Overall, this was a quick stop with gorgeous scenery. I highly recommend pulling over to take in a piece of Kauaʻi's natural beauty.

We traveled the trail to the end then went through the tunnel to get to the top. The tunnel was awesome with a bunch of trees that block all the sun on a steep hill going up. The beaches were amazing along the trail. We will definitely be back with our kids to do it again.

We've been to the island a few times now and each time, we try something new. Since we were staying…read morein Lihue, we did a satellite view and found Hanamaulu Beach. It is definitely for locals and while there are unhoused individuals that call this beach home, they kept to themselves. We parked under a tree and decided to go for a swim. The water is murky but super calm especially when you compare it to the 10 ft swells Poipu Beach has been getting. The water all around the island has been a little colder than normal, but this beach has warm vents as you swim so the water was warm with a cool layer on top. We stayed for over two hours and everyone kept to themselves. When I threw away some plastic I found on the beach, I was in close proximity to a couple of unhoused in the pavilion and they paid me no mind. The dogs are super social and sweet so they're not a worry either.

Some tips before you arrive: 1) The rooms are something you'd find at summer camp. Unfinished floors, ceiling, etc. 2) The kitchen has all the appliances you'll need (e.g., toaster oven, pots, can opener, peelers, blender, etc.). It's kept fairly well, but some of the appliances are grungy and don't really work. 3) The roosters are loud and the walls are thin, if someone moves over you, you'll hear it. Also, car alarms can go off right outside the hostel. So bring ear plugs, maybe white noise if you're sensitive to sounds. 4) no A/C but it gets cool enough at night (in April) 5) a ~10mile bike path along the ocean is right outside from the hostel with a good for swimming and surfing beach at the end of it
