In spite of having done business with J&S for decades their repeated unhelpfulness and poor attitude has driven me away. I come in the store and there is no one there. Then I realize there's a black guy and a bearded guy hiding behind a screen in the corner. The black dude acts annoyed that I disturbed him. It just gets worse from there. This is after some previous unpleasantness. I don't know why I kept coming back- habit, I guess. But no more. To be specific, they returned a chainsaw that was to be sharpened with the chain so tight it couldn't be turned, or started, twice. So....two years ago when we bought our house J & S came out and changed all the locks for us. Fast forward to today. I needed a door re-keyed. I ignored the lousy Yelp reviews because I had good service from them back in 2016. I called and the person who answered told me "Sorry, my business only does lock work on cars and for businesses". Funny, because their website says "We can unlock and make keys for cars, trucks, boats and motorcycles as well as homes and business." Apparently, the info on their website is NOT true. Or maybe they just didn't feel like doing any work today? Whatever. I called their competitor and they are on their way. I won't be bothering J & S with my business anymore. read more

Years ago I bought a Toro from them. When I went to get it serviced (as you do) I was met with hostility as though I asked my neighbor to do free service work.I avoid them at all cost. A while back I locked myself out of my car at a chase bank, with my phone in there as well. The people at chase were kind enough to google a locksmith and let me use their phone to call one. Please note I was on the clock for my job at the time getting money for them. I explained my location, which I do quite often because of ordering takeout, deliveries, taxis, Ubers, friends, etc. Said chase bank on east side at the corner of 3rd and 45/46 bypass. Somehow they went to the chase bank on the west side one and when they couldn't find me gave up. I had waited an hour before calling back. Once I restated my location they came within 15 minutes. It was lackluster but the man who arrived was very kind and apologized for the mixup. read more

After learning about the better model ($225 more than the first model we considered) We were able to negotiate a $50 discount AND the manager threw in a couple TORO ball caps PLUS free delivery! Where do I begin? I was having trouble getting my older Toro pushmower started in spring so I took it into the store. The guy who checked it in said it'd be a week or a week and a half. After that time period passed, I started calling the store to find out what the status was. We had a wet spring and my yard was overgrown. Each time I called, I was placed on hold for at least 10 minutes. (The job was a magneto replacement.) Finally, after 23 days they called to say the mower was done. I took time out of my day to leave work, grab a vehicle I could actually haul the thing in and went over to the shop. I paid the guy behind the counter and he said they'd bring the mower around front. It was the wrong mower. My mower was not done. They got my mower mixed up with another one that didn't look anything like it. Go to Lowes or Menards. At least there if someone mess up, there will be someone in the building who cares. That's certainly not the case at J & S. Honestly, if I had to do this all over again I would have just tossed our old Toro in the trash and bought a brand new one. read more

These guys need some customer service training, as they seemed very rude and unfriendly during a recent visit I made to their store. As I was waiting for service, I observed one clerk speaking in a very disrespectful manner to an elderly gentleman who was having trouble understanding the clerk's heavy "hoosier" accent. meanwhile two other clerks were making themselves look very busy though there were no other customers in the store...they didn't help me, though I was obviously waiting for help. Eventually the older customer left, and I approached the clerk who had helped him and said "Hello" in a loud, cheerful manner. There was no response, though all three clerks stopped to stare at me. By now feeling basically unwelcome in the store, I quickly finished my business and left. Doubt I'll be back. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERCIVE AND I DONT CARE ATTITUDE! I called to ask is they had a 311 chain saw. They said they did. 20 minutes later I arrive with my old chain saw to tune up and purchase a new 311 saw and chaps. The idiots didn't have one in stock and I wasted my time. He claimed he looked but the spot was empty. The next saw was 75 dollars more and they would not lower the price of the saw even though I was easily going to spend 900 dollars right there and now between extra chains, chain bar safety gear. I went here to J&S on the recommendation of a locksmith friend. Chain and local hardware shops in Chicago and Bloomington did not have the right key type to copy my boyfriend's apartment key, and the guys at J&S were able to create it in minutes. The keys were a little more pricey than other places, but I think that's based on the higher quality service they can provide. Note that the hours are limited if you work full time. However, they met my needs when I went, so I give them a good rating. read more

Informed when dropping a repair item off that it would be 1-2 weeks. 3 weeks later they could not locate it for some time and finally informed that nothing has been done as a couple techs have quit. No courtesy call to customers and no estimate as when the repair will be completed. Poor. Should have gone somewhere else. read more

My father was dying of lung cancer and in the hospital after a stroke. My family had a large collection of items kept in gun safes. My father at the time was staying at my mothers. A family member that brought my drugged up and dying father home contacted j&s and had them come out and drill out the gun safes and all the items were then stolen. When my lawyer and the sheriff contacted j&s they stated that they have no way of knowing who owns the property when they come out to drill a safe. My father died weeks later with the belief that it was all his fault when in reality it would have been stopped if proof of ownership would have been proven before it occurred. I have since been confronted in public by the owner of the company were the 450 pound man has tried to belittle me and my fathers memory. What a very unprofessional person? Took them my saw for minor repairs, they called me 3 weeks later to tell me they couldn't find parts or fix the saw. When I went to pick it up they gave it back to me disassembled and charged me $25. Nuff said. read more

I took my Honda mower to them to see if they could repair it. I hit the water meter cover in my yard and bent the crank (Whoops, It happens). After 2 weeks they contacted me and said they could not repair it. I went to get it, they charged $50 for disassembly, which was not that bad. Then they asked me if I wanted to sell the mower to them for $250. Which leads me to believe that they were trying to turn a larger profit, instead of doing the repair. I paid $750 for the mower. I might be wrong about their intentions, as I did not ask why they wanted the mower, nor did they tell me why. read more

I called them to inquire about repairing an electronic lock on a safe. The person I called wasn't at all friendly, seemed annoyed that I had even called. Nonetheless, I explained what I was calling about and he gave me over to 'Keith'. He was cordial enough, I explained to him what I was calling about, and he said he'd do some research and call me back. I've yet to hear from him. This was just over two weeks ago. Enough said, I plan to go out of my way never to call or even visit again. In the mean time I had lots of time to do my own research, and I ended up fixing it myself. read more

I called the shop before going and asked very specific questions about what I wanted. Essentially, I had a blank key for a Ford Taurus and needed it cut and programmed to the car. The guy on the phone told me it had to be an OEM key. It was, I opened it up and it is genuine Ford Motor Co equipment. I asked if they could cut the key and program. He said yes. I asked how much. He said $35. I asked if I could do this on a walk in basis. He said yes. I asked how long would it take. he said 10-15 minutes. Their website indicates they do this. The guy on the phone said they do this. I get there. The guy behind the counter, no idea if it is the same guy, said they won;t do that for 3rd party keys. I asked if they sold keys. He said only those that unlock doors. I asked if he could still cut the key I had and he did and charged me $2. Basically, they guy on the phone lied and their website is not accurate. The guy at the shop who cut me key then told me to go to another location where they do program keys. Guess what, that place doesn't and knew I was sent by J&S.
