In our current time when baked goods are purchased at grocery stores, big box club stores, or off the shelf in a box walking in this bakery brought me back to my childhood when my grandmother would bake a cake from scratch every Sunday, and there were at least 4 different bakeries in my tiny downtown of Metuchen. Walking into J&L Bakery was like stepping into a downtown bakery 40 years ago. The very friendly baker greeted my son and I like we were neighbors. It is evident that everything is made from scratch in house. The Donut display had the old fashioned basics, nothing mass produced like Dunkin Donuts. The cookies cakes and pastries were not like an Italian bakery with rows and rows of perfectly aligned identical desserts. Even the topping on the everything bagel I ordered was homemade, it definitely did not look like a supermarket bottle of everything seasoning. I enjoyed everything I ordered and loved the blast from the past feeling. If you're into retro check it out. However, I have to say my 24 year old son was not feeling the retro vibe. He didn't want to order anything, he is used to the "cookie cutter" - lol- perfectly perfect display. My sister in law (visiting from Texas) and I found the bakery and went in. Nice old photos and ambiance. We asked about birthday cakes and later called back and asked the owner about ordering one. He made my mother in law's 97th birthday cake. She loved it, and she used to own a bakery herself! The cake was light and delicate and the whipped cream was light and not heavy. I was greeted immediately from the baker tending his ovens with pride and joy that was as refreshing as any morning cup of coffee. I left loaded...with an assortment of baked goods that looked amazing, smelled divine and tasted fresh & delectable...and with an earful of local color and amazing historic anecdotes (the baker used to work for the bygone Gaston Ave. bakery!) Great Bakery! Fresh pastries, rolls, coffee cakes and cookies. I haven't tried the breads, but from what I have tried so far, I am sure they are good as well. The baker is super nice and friendly. Always has a smile for everyone that comes in. The woman that works the counter very personable. Ever since the Eichel family sold Gaston Avenue bakery in Somerville, there has been a big void for a good old school bakery in the area. The owner was a former baker for Mr. Eichel and retains some of the recipes. Great rolls, rye, russian rye and marble breads. I miss a good hazelnut tort. Get it here, but its special order only. Don't let the lackluster appearance fool you, their is good Jewish/European baking here. They are not an Italian bakery! If you want Italian pastries (canollis, St Joe's zepoles) go to Meditteraneu in Bound Brook or try Randazzo's in Raritan. read more

I recently purchased 12 small Cannoli's and two pounds of Italian cookies for a mere $65.00, for my husband birthday. Never again! The Cannoli's were special order, therefore, one would think fresh - wrong - shell tasted like oil - filling had a strange taste of cinnamon red hot candies! I would have been better off going to Shop Rite. For a bakery, very disappointed!!!!! Who puts cinnamon red hot candies seasonings into Cannoli filling? As for the cookies, oh my goodness - they were horrible - had a very old stale refrigerator taste - no flavor what so ever. Needless to say no one ate any of it - it all went into the trash can. I will never go back, nor do I recommend them. read more

I enjoyed the plain cheesecake - rich, firm, and very cheesey. It is not typical New York style as I can taste they used different kind of cheese, but still very delicious. $14 for a whole cheesecake is hard to beat. I will definitely come back. Friendly staff :) read more

They also have some traditional polish food for sale, which I have not yet tried but will be back for it. The Cheese Babkah was absolutely delicious. The prices were reasonable also. Seriously bypass the Dunkin Donuts and stop in for a freshly baked donut made from scratch on premises. You won't be disappointed, as with any bakery get there early to get it fresh. I randomly stopped in one morning to discover this was the old fashioned bakery, I was missing from when I was a child. I can only speak for the Donuts and Danish so far but he also bakes cookies and cakes. Baked fresh and made on the premises by Lou a 73 year old baker who has been doing it all his life. I knew I wanted fresh bread to bring to a dinner party. I called ahead to see how late they were open (4 p.m.) and what kind of loafs of bread they carried. The baker said he would make the bread fresh for me and would even stay open a bit later if I was running a bit after 4. I ordered a mozzarella cheese bread (my choice of cheese) and pepperoni bread. I wanted a third, and he suggested a sour dough bread that he said he could add some spices to giving it a bit more pizzazz. All three breads were fabulous! I have been eating Manville Bakery for 5 years and j&L Bakery is the tastiest in town and the prices are affordable and zany:-) He and his staff are very personable and affable.
