We were really happy with the all-you-can-eat option, which includes sushi, udon, teriyaki, hibachi, appetizers, soups, desserts...everything, except drinks. The dishes are all usually well-prepared, especially the sushi, and cooked/made to order. On one occasion the steak hibachi was overdone but the other time it was fine... Service is great here, very friendly and upbeat (even in spite of being short staffed)...and the environment is easygoing and chill (you won't feel rushed)... Parking is plentiful, and it does get very busy on the weekends. You can make reservations for larger groups (over 5 people, I think). Definitely give this place a try, if in the area! I really wanted to love this place, but my experience was just okay. I may have chosen the wrong rolls, so take this with a grain of salt. I ordered a jalapeño cream cheese roll that unfortunately was completely overpowered by onions -- it drowned out the other flavors. I also tried a roll with a wasabi honey sauce that just didn't work for me at all; the sweetness and wasabi combination tasted off and kind of unpleasant. The other rolls weren't bad, but they felt like they were missing some texture -- a bit of crunch would have made a big difference. My interest was piqued when I saw that they had all you can eat sashimi and fancy rolls so I made the pilgrimage to North Liberty and had a very enjoyable dinner. I'm working on being in a calorie deficit so we walked from Iowa City to the restaurant which was a delightful 8 Mile walk that left us ravenous and ready to devour everything in sight! My favorite item was the grilled eel sashimi and I discovered that you can get several pieces of it and lay it on top of your sushi roll for extra deliciousness! The fried shrimps were also lovely and extremely large. Why bother getting a roll with a fried shrimp in it when you can just get the fried shrimp because that's really what you want. The salmon sashimi was not the cut that I was expecting but the fish was okay. It looked like awkward ends that wouldn't slice nicely for nigiri but still look good enough not to conceal in a roll. I got the salmon lover roll which I wasn't a big fan of because the spicy salmon had a lot of panko in it and felt like a lot of filler and not much fish. I very much enjoyed the soft shell crab roll and in the future would consider getting several of them and applying grilled eel atop them to make the perfect tasty treat. We got a lot of salmon nigiri and they were great. Nice cuts of fish well applied to their rice which was decently seasoned. We also got a cocktail that was blue and coconut and tropical flavored with a little gummy shark for a garnish that was quite tasty. Definitely had no room for ice cream. We also didn't explore any of the hibachi menu but I have a feeling we're going to be back! The ambiance was more cafeteria than restaurant but the service was fast and it was easy to order multiple rounds of all you can eat! It's pretty cool how they had an itemized bill for everything we ordered which we got as a souvenir at the end of our visit. This definitely would be a good place to come for someone else's birthday. I came with two friends for their AYCE dinner option ($30/person) and it did not disappoint. Every roll was made fresh to order and packed with flavor. The quality is as good as you'll find for an AYCE restaurant, especially in a landlocked state. My personal favorites were the Ichiban roll and the Tuna Lover roll. We topped off the sushi with a few fried Oreos and a few scoops of ice cream and were delightfully stuffed. The atmosphere was clean and inviting. "All you can eat sushi" would typically scare me off, but Izumi is awesome and is the one sushi place in Iowa City my husband who lives in Japan doesn't resist going to. I don't know how they stay in business with $30 for all you can eat from their entire menu, but I hope they're around for a very long time. If you head there on a weekend, be prepared to wait. Even with their expansion, they're still packed on the weekend. The word is clearly out about Izumi. I call to order carry-out and the process is always smooth and the food is available in about 15 minutes during lunch time. I got the beef udon, which was really good and a lot of food. I ended up having it for 2 lunches. I got the spicy crab roll, which I didn't realize was just imitation crab in the roll, so the next time I ordered the Waikiki roll and it had more on it and was really good. My wife & I heard about Izumi & even though my wife is not a fan of sushi they had other options for her. When e arrive we were immediately seated by the hostess & our waitress came a few minutes after. She instructed us on how to order from the all you can eat menu or order off the regular menu, which was insightful. Before she left to let us decide what we wanted she asked us what our drink of choice was. So my wife & I ordered what we wanted on the menu. After about 10 minutes we had everything for our first round & the waitress still hasn't brought us our drinks. We waited for another 5 minutes or so then we seen a manager & told her that we've been waiting for our drinks for quite a while & all we got was, " as you can see we're pretty busy right now." There was no I'm sorry about that or any apology of any sort & they were almost acting snooty about our concerns as a customer. Then when we finally got our drinks & she took our order & soon after our appetizers arrived. We had an issue with one of the appetizers & we let the manager know about it & we weren't done eating our appetizers & the managers just took the rest of the appetizers & didn't apologize or ask us if we were finished with the rest. The food was fabulous the service was sub par but in the end they did discount for the error on the appetizers which was nice of them to do. All in all we will be going back hopefully with better service next time knowing everybody has a bad day or bad experience some times. I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the staff we interacted with were all delightful. The food was the problem. We were there for dinner and went with AYCE. We ordered some drinks and appetizers. The drinks were okay, one was "burnt". The apps were good. Next we got hibachi shrimp, hibachi chicken, and an Angry Dragon roll. The hibachi dishes were literally like soup. There was so much super-sweet sauce that the staff member who came to clear the dishes actually said, "Wow! That's a lot of sauce." And then proceeded to spill said sauce all over the end of the table because, even though I ate all of the ingredients swimming in it, the dish was still full of it. The sushi was no better, having been similarly drenched in sauce. Not quite as bad, but it had other issues. Overall, I had high hopes but will never come back and will caution others against it. For a meal that cost well over $100, I have never been so disappointed and I am sitting here at 1 am and sick to my stomach while I write this review. read more

After numerous people raving about this place, we decided to check it out. My husband LOVES sushi, and I was just happy there was a large menu that allows for a non-sushi eater like me to also find something tasty. We went to Izumi for lunch. For $19.95 per person with a lot of choices was incredible good price especially if you can eat a lot. Their miso soup was good. However the rolls wrapped with a lot of rice very tiny protein. Their hibachi the salmon was 4 inches long and 1/3 thickness kind like crispy and loaded with a bunch of fried rice. Basically you eat more starches if you pick a lot of rolls. It's Japanese fusion and doesn't taste real Japanese. Unfortunately during the day we ate around 1:30pm was not busy. We had the lazy server. He brought us soup, the all our order came the same time. Our table was full. He didn't give us small plate for condiment. After he dropped the food he disappeared. Then other server fill out our water for the second times. I see other table the food came each time after their finished eating. His name was Dika maybe from Andika. I never eat in the restaurant that all the food came at the same time. There was no room on our small table and didn't look good like greedy. Went back with my wife for dinner again and portions and food quality had changed 100%. Tiny shrimp and scallops and meat was sirloin and required steel teeth to chew. (Wish I could do half-stars, they'd be a 4.5). We've had both lunch and dinner AYCE at Izumi now, and would strongly recommend! Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and the restaurant is spacious, immaculately clean, and well laid out (you don't get a lot of carry over noise from other tables). They tell you up front that the ACYE portions are smaller than the a la crate sizes, so you just plan accordingly. We've tried 4-5 different rolls, most of the nigiri (I agree with the other reviewer who says it's on a favorable par with Konami or Red Ginger) and a handful of appetizers/other items. The shrimp tempura is excellent (and because it's cooked to order it comes out piping hot each time, which I maybe discovered the hard way the first time), the miso soup is very good, and the shrimp Udon soup was wonderful. Looking forward to ordering off the a la carte for delivery (they use Door Dash, hoping they join Chomp eventually) nights when we're feeling lazy.
