Hands down awesome! I love trying spas around the world and enjoy the unique experience from traditional Turkish hamam to 24 hour Korean spa to japanese onsen and Izba russian banya is not to be missed as an authentic and traditional experience! My best friend and I went together and it was amazing. You have a private room with hot tub, spa, shower and massage tables, not fancy but clean and accommodating. It was not too intimate for two close non romantic friends and you could choose to wear a swimsuit in the hot tub and sauna or not. We were not totally sure about the two male practitioners at first joking that they were going to "beat" us up (we knew it was part of the treatment with the traditional sauna birch sticks which look like a bundle of ties herbs) but they were absolutely professional and hospitable. We first undressed in our treatment room and wrapped in towels before moving to sit in a private two person salt room to breathe in the air to help clear sinuses for a short while. Then back in our private treatment room we were instructed to lay facedown on the top bench of the sauna head to head and one practitioner came in a few time to check on us and add herbs to the saun steam which smelled amazing. He then applied "aka smaked" our backs with the birch bundles which felt exhilarating as the heat built up. We were quickly relieved when we got water boarded with buckets of cold water poured over us but it was hilarious and rejuvenating. When done in the sauna he helped us move to briefly shower off and then get settled on the massage tables. The second therapist joined and we had side by side massages that we agreed were some of the best we've ever experienced - cue the chef's kiss. read more

None of the reviews here prepared me for what happened at Izba so I'll do my best. First of all, this is a one on one experience with your therapist. I would have been way more comfortable with a woman my first time, but Eugene was very professional. You're basically naked for the entirely of the treatment as you are draped with little towels for the banya or as the therapist directs you to the next spot with a towel held up between your sweaty body and their face. I've been back 4 times. Tiffany was amazing for the massage! And I've been able to relax into it 100% now that I know what's up. This is a perfect way to bump up a nutritional detox or just warm up during the winter. A great experience! read more

We arrived here all ready for our deluxe treatment which included a hot tub session to start, a massage, banya (which is a steam room session whilst being hit with oak branches-it is supposed to make you sweat quicker?) then another massage, back for another banya then finish off with either a body mask or body polish. The massage was great and they ask you where you have trouble with tight muscles etc and work on those points with your preferred amount of pressure. The banya was different but I loved the steam room and sweating it all out. I chose the body mask which smelt like seaweed and they cover your body all over and let you lie there for a while whilst it does its work on your skin. My wife chose the polish and left her skin feeling really soft but did mention it being a bit sore on her legs at times. After all that, you have a shower to rinse off and get dressed and are greeted with fruit and tea when you make it back to the reception area. The deluxe treatment is $155 each and comparing it to other places, you get a lot of bang for your buck! read more

I drove thru rush hour traffic 45 minutes, paid for parking, got inside the business at 530 PM and was then told my appointment was no longer available. I'm always hesitant to post a review on things I love for fear the word will get out!! But these guys are so good I have to share. I've worked with Eugene and Dmitri and they are both AMAZING. I took my mom here for her Birthday before I tried it and she LOVED it so I gave it a go for myself. Really amazing deep tissue massage and the heat from the Banya treatment makes you MELT. As a word of advice, expect different draping during your massage than you might see in a standard swedish massage. I've had both the ruchkin and the eugene special and both were AMAZING. During banya they'll let you marinate for a bit with essential oils while you warm up in the steam room and then they use oak leaves on you. If you don't like deep tissue I wouldn't necessarily recommend this. If you do like deep tissue it's awesome! read more

Nestled in the same building as the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Massage Therapy Institute of Colorado, Izba Spa is a little Russian oasis right off Colfax Avenue. For my birthday, my girlfriend gave me a gift certificate for the Izba Spa Special--1 1/2 hours total with a hot tub session, massage, and one Russian Banya session. The first two you probably know about, but the last is something distinctly Russian. Actually, the whole experience is. Everything you need is in the same treatment room. After a nice hot soak, you hobble over to the massage table and get ready for the rubdown. My therapist was a big guy, originally from Kazakhstan, who liked to talk about life. My girlfriend had a different therapist who also like to talk about life. I have a feeling this is a tradition. I wanted to ask my guy what he thought about Borat, coming from Kazakhstan and all, but then I thought "don't make the big guy mad while you're naked, prone, and he has his hands on your neck." So, we talked about how the marijuana growing in central Asia will make you hallucinate. My massage was great. He had strong hands, but was never caused pain ... except for when he stretched my legs. I have preterhumanly tight t-bands, so "individual results may vary" as they say. After the massage came the banya. Basically, it goes like this: you lie down in the sauna and heat up for a minute, he adds some essential oils of peppermint and eucalyptus to the heater, clearing your sinuses with the steam and warming you up even more. Then, brings in what are essentially pom poms made from oak leaves, soaks them in water, gets them good and hot over the heater, and beats you with them. Okay, he doesn't really beat you. It's more like brushing and patting. This delivers the steam and heat, invigorates the skin, and all that good stuff. It felt great, but you have to be okay with heat. I was born on a hot and humid day in July, in a room without air conditioning (my poor mother), so I'm used to heat. You'll be sweating for sure. But no worries, the beating is followed by a bucket of cold water. Hmmm, sounds like an interrogation, doesn't it? Well, I was so relaxed, I could have told you anything. I booked Paulito and I a couples massage here for Valentine's Day. We had the hot tub/massage/banya treatment. We ventured down a LONG hall and found the place...it's eerily dark and creepy in there. Here's a hint, don't bother with the hot tub and the banya treatment unless you're into pain. The hot tub was too hot! 110 degrees, I think it said? Jiminy Crickets! I slowly sunk into it like Bugs Bunny does in that episode that he thinks he's taking a bath but really he's being boiled in a soup pot...I had to pop out after 5 min and lay on my table and wait for the massage. Now that massage, Leapin' Lizards! It's a tie between another I had received as the best massage EVER! I believe my masseuse's name was Janet? She rocked. She made up for that boiling hot jacuzzi. EXCELLENT! We then went into the Sauna and sweated a bit which was nice...then the Banya treatment. Ok, she beat me with a bush! That didn't really feel good. Then she rubbed honey all over me...she then mentioned she was into skin care and said she'd rub honey on my face...whoops she put some in my eye....ouchie. Then we sweated some more and then...a "surprise"! That's what Janet called it. I won't ruin it for you and tell you what the "surprise" was. She helped us up and we took a shower. A sliced up apple and really tasty tea waited for us. As we snacked, we noticed that they are the official massagers of the Avalanche Hockey Team. Nice huh? Truly (madly, deeply) the most awesome spa experience I've ever had. I will be coming back here again and again. You've probably driven by this place a million times, as it's on York/Colfax and in the same building as the School of Chinese Medicine, and Massage Therapy Institute. Izba's sign is on the very bottom of the big blue and white sign, so hard to see. I drive by that building probably 3x a week and was none the wiser. I first heard about this place while I was getting some treatments at Woodhouse Day Spa (oh, snap!!). My manicurist couldn't stop talking about it, which was a little strange, given the fact that we were at Woodhouse, but it made me really curious to check it out. Unfortunately, she couldn't remember how to spell the damn name so it took me forever to find it. Once I did, and found the website, I was good to go! As Taj mentioned in his review below, everything is contained in the same room - my friend and I did the Deluxe treatment - 2.5 hours. The room was gorgeous - very nice artwork on the walls (literally ON the walls, not framed artwork), and it was very cozy. A hot tub session, two massages, two banya sessions and your choice of a body mask or polish. All for the ridiculously awesome price of $135. Are you kidding me? That's like a half hour massage and an express manicure anywhere else. I'm not going to repeat the procedures that Taj wrote out, since he did such a good job, and I'd just be redundant. If you're looking for a wonderful, but affordable, spa experience, please try Izba. I swear, you will never experience anything close to it at another spa (well, unless maybe you're in Russia!). Pro tip - this spa doesn't have the typical amenities like hair dryers, mirrors, deodorant, etc. that you might be accustomed to (you do get a shower, though!) I have been wanting to go to Izba for two years now and recently had the opportunity to do so and it was well worth the wait and then some.... At first, you go down these stairs and all of these corridors until you reach a hallway marked Izba...We were greeted by the office worker who was very friendly and explained to us that as soon as our forms were filled out that they would take us back.... When we were summoned back into the room we were instructed to start first with the hot tub session...I went with my partner and we both brought swimsuits but were informed that they were optional because the room was going to be completely private!....Wow!....Really?....This room was pure perfection!....The room was completely private, it had the hot tub in one corner, two massage tables set up in another corner, shower in another corner and the enclosed steam room in the last corner.....The room was decorated in intricate wood work all over the walls and the ceiling....The aromas that filled the room were delightful....The lighting was low lighting and perfect and even the music that was being played suited the mood....very relaxing!!.....It was pure perfection! After the 10-15 minute hot tub session, you start with your first massage session laying face down on the massage table....You are worked at the same time along side whomever you decide to experience this with and it's just delightful....What an incredible massage!.....I've been lied to my whole life because I've never quite experienced a massage like this....Intense but perfect! After the first massage session then you are told to enter into the steam room.....You lay in the room at the same time with whomever you're experiencing this with and then the steam treatment begins!.....Then you are beaten with a bush basically!.....I know that might sound horrible but it was delightful!.....After that, you are lathered up with cool honey and then told to go rinse off in the shower...... After you shower you walk back to the massage tables facing up and the second series of massage starts....My masseuse was SO good!....He was able to work out some muscle pain that I didn't know I even had!!!.....I felt stretched out and relaxed! After the second massage session you are told to re-enter into the steam room this time facing up and the same banyan treatment ensues.....Then you are lathered down with the cool honey again and it's just awesome! Before you are told to exit and go into the shower one last time, you are told to flip onto your stomach......I knew that this was part of the session but next time, I personally might ask for slightly warmer water to be poured instead of what felt like ice water......Now my partner enjoyed it, but I am not a fan of ANYTHING cold! So maybe you might enjoy it but I personally would either just say forget it completely, or ask for slightly warmer water......Then you are told to shower one last time and they have great smelling shampoo, conditioner and body wash available to use. You don't have to bring anything like a bathing suit if you feel comfortable in going in the hot tub naked and they even provide cups of cold water to drink and towels... What I loved was the privacy of it all....It was very romantic and relaxing.....This was an experience I hope to have again sometime much sooner than 2 years from now like it took me to go in the first place! This is something that everyone should at least experience once in their lives.....Kind of like going to New York City!.....It's so delightful and worth the money for a 2-hour session. Anything less than that would not be as great! And at the end, when you're all dressed and out by the office to pay, there are freshly cut apples and hot tea waiting for you! Don't forget to tip your masseuse too!.....What an experience!!....I seriously was trying to figure out a way that I could include this into my monthly budget, it was THAT good! This is not a fancy spa. This is a Russian spa. Think dark, serious, intense. No frills here. You walk in and the lobby feels a little like a Buddhist/Russian lobby for a family style restaurant. The walls are covered in photos of family, bulky professional weight lifters and a signed photo of Celine Dion circa 1990. I give the place five stars hands down. I arrived and was a tad confused as I wove my way down a long hall to finally find myself in the basement of the School of Chinese Medicine. I was early for my appointment so I sat in the charming lobby area. It feels a bit cozy. I didn't wait long before being taken into my room. The experience is hardly worth trying to recreate - so I'm going to offer a few tips I think will help the new person. Go for the Izba Spa Special...at the least. When you get in the hot tub, sit at an angle where you can see the clock, and make sure you stay in long enough. I got out too early and ended up waiting on the table when I could have been enjoying the soak more. I think he gave me instructions but I missed this part - start face down. When he came in and I was facing up- wrong direction. The only other thing I can say is RELAX and ENJOY. I had read the reviews about the Banya experience and felt a tad bit of anxiety - not needed. You're in a total relaxed state and it's one more experience to help separate you from the anxiety of every day and enter the peacefulness of really being present minded. The heat and aroma create a warm, moist blanket around you(in a good way). And the cold water is exhilarating. You finish up by stepping into a warm shower. I loved the experience. My boyfriend and I made a reservation for Thursday at noon for the Deluxe Package ($140 per person) which includes an hour massage, a half hour sauna/banya treatment, three showers, 15 minute hot tub session, and a choice of a salt scrub or mud mask. (not in that order- but equalling 2.5 hours) And then when your are done you get to enjoy fruit and tea in their lobby area. My boyfriend got massaged by Eugine, and said he is amazing, and would request him again. My experience here was absolutely awesome!! I decided to try a new type of massage/spa experience and this was definitely different. I did the 2 hour Basic Treatment and for a first timer I think I over did it! :) But here's the low down: Soaked in a private hot tub for 15 minutes, in a private room that had beautiful woodwork and it truly felt like I was not in Denver anymore. My massage therapist, Eugene, was very nice, professional, and informative! The massage itself was pretty intense, not a relaxing flowing massage, yet I did doze off for a smidge at one point, but I was really sore for a couple days (my bad, I should have been more outspoken about the pressure used. (I'm a pretty tough cookie, I can handle it rough, deep, whatevs...imagine a large russian man with huge, muscular hands, tenderizing a kitten) THEN, comes the banya!! A small, private sauna in which essential oils/water are put on the coals and then the therapist comes in to heat up the oak branches that they slap/pat you with. Then you're rubbed down with honey (natural antiseptic!) At that point I was SO hot I could barely stand it, but I had another massage and banya treatment coming! I had read other reviews before going so I knew about the "suprise" cold water at the end and I couldn't WAIT for it, I was SO hot! 2 times in the banya was too much for me to handle, I was SO hot after round two (even with the cold water and shower) that I could barely get dressed due to light headedness and being so overheated. One time in the banya would have been plenty for me! I would definitely go back! But for me personally, 2 banya sessions was just too much heat, and I would want to ask for a gentler touch on my massage. Also, I usually have female therapists for my massages, so I was a little nervous with a male, but Eugene was a complete professional! I discovered Izba Spa by accident, walking down York Street. It is connected to a school of Chinese medicine and located discreetly inside. Walking in is a bit confusing because there is a pharmacy, school, clinic and spa all within the same building. Tip: look for the Izba Spa signs that are posted on the wall. They will guide you to where you need to be. I came here with my partner and recieved 2 banya sessions and a massage. We were in the same room and the therapy room contained the massage tables, the banya (dry sauna), a hot tub and a shower. The massage therapist guided us through the process. First, we were told to strip down, cover ourselves with a towel and lay face down in the banya. The therapist checked in on us a couple of times to make sure we were comfortable and provided water in case we needed it. The shocker comes when the therapist comes in to beat the crap out of you (in a good way) with oak leaves. He gave fair warning before he began slapping us with the leaves. He said it was to stimulate sweating and detoxification. After being in the banya for a bit (10 or 15 min maybe?) we came out of the banya, onto the tables and began our massage. After the massage was over we went back into the banya for another session (this time face up) and yes, we were beat again with the leaves. So...how was it? It was pretty amazing. The massage therapists were skilled and respectful and the experience was very relaxing and therapeutic. If you're in the area and have a chance, stop by and check it out. I got a gift certificate here for Christmas, I was not so sure at first! I have never heard of this place. But as Lynn said I had driven by it so many times! My boyfriend and I did the couples treatment, we took a nice soak in the hot tub and then we both got a massage right next to each other which was very cool. Both of us loved our massage therapist they were great...we then in the sauna for the Banya treatment which was very cool and very relaxing and refreshing. Like Lynn said they are not a fancy spa so do bring a hair tie and they don't really have mirrors, but I have never felt so relaxed and refreshed!!! read more

What can I say? I'm a spa junkie and finding a place that has something different to offer than the usual massages is right up my alley. I love the unusual location, you keep walking down to the depths of an old house converted into a holistic center. The Russian decor is really cool and the place just has a no frills vibe that I really appreciated. My friend and I decided to get the 15 hot tub session with one hour massage. The hot tub is nice and deep so your shoulders are covered (I love being fully submerged in the hot tub since my neck and shoulders are usually tense) and the water is clean and perfectly heated. You soak for 15 mins then transfer over to the massage table. The massage was intense, I won't lie. I do like a deep massage so for me, it was awesome. You can always tell your therapist what pressure you prefer. My philosophy is that if you aren't experiencing some sort of discomfort during a massage, you really aren't getting the full benefit. Anyway, it was a great deep tissue massage and the technique is slightly different than most places. They serve you tea and sliced apples after your treatment. I love that extra touch! For overall experience, technique and uniqueness this place gets 5 stars! The atmosphere is down to earth and steeped in tradition, which I like very much. The routine of heating your body, receiving massage and repeating is lovely. First we started in a water spa for 15 mins. Then we went to the table for our first massage. Afterwards we went to a dry sauna; the wooden kind with hot rocks. Steam and aromatics were added to make the room smell so good. I have been scheduling my treatments with Tiffany for the past year; she also never disappoints. She is great at working through tight spots, is very balanced and leaves me feeling longer. My gal and I got the basic treatment after the holidays - the rooms are a private enclave for two, which was really great. Hot tub is up on a riser from the massage tables and across for the sauna, next to the shower. Really cool art on the walls - extra star for the whole motif in the rooms. The place is way down in the guts of the TCM building, and you walk by a bunch of classrooms/through a break room which is kind of weird. Staff was professional and amicable - everything was timely and as promised. It was pretty wild to get smacked with oak leaf bundles and rubbed with honey. We had been battling this wicked winter headcold and this really put us on the road to recovery. It was also cool to see all the signed photos of traveling russian athletes - place is legit.
