This was not my group's first choice for restaurant, but many places in Newberg are closed on Sunday. We were seated right away and ordered pretty soon after. The first sign this was place was a mistake was the blackberry margaritas. It didn't taste at all like tequila or lime, just blackberry syrup. It was like worse jolly rancher juice. We couldn't even drink them. I ordered the chile relleno and it barely even had any poblano pepper in it and the egg was basically slippery omelette. The texture kind of made me sick. I ate the slice of pepper out from the egg and then focused on the rice and beans, which were bland, but still my favorite part of the meal. I honestly would've been happier with just a plate of rice and beans or a cheese quesadilla. We've been on the hunt for a "favorite" Mexican restaurant since moving into the area five years ago. Ixtapa has been our favorite so far! Very friendly service, great salsa, big portions served hot. The interior seemed friendly and inviting. I liked how they had decorated for Christmas. Not sure why it's so hard to find good Mexican food in the PDX area but it's been disappointing. At least Ixtapa is someplace we can go to know we'll get some solid, tasty food. read more

The food was authentic to Ixtapa and delicious albeit different. For example the chile rellenos was slices of poblano pepper filled with cheese slices and cooked in egg (not a whole poblano and not dipped and fried in egg whites as I'm used to). The service was great (super sweet servers) and the ambiance was fitting of a Mom and Pop shop. The place was recommended to us by a local and that is who kept streaming in so I think that is a pretty good sign of tasty food oh and delicious margaritas!! read more

I've lived in Newberg since I was 5, and growing up I would always visit Ixtapa with my mom and family. The workers there are so kind, and are very set on making sure you are happy with your food! The environment is nice, calm, and very relaxing. Their food has always been great, and the chips and salsa you get before your meal is absolutely delicious! I have a lot of great memories from going here as a kid, and I still love going there now, Ixtapa will forever hold a special place in my heart. Love you guys! read more

Surprise surprise it's a family run Mexican restaurant in Newberg. The chips and salsa as always are fresh and ready for nom nom. There is a lot on the menu. As always I don't know seems like they should make it easier or specialize in something. It just makes all the food kind of okay. You can see they are trying to please everyone and draw in customers by having everything. To me that is the downside. If there is nothing special then everything is not special. Served with beans and rice maybe shouldn't be with everything It just makes me think of the delivery truck that just makes five exact stops at five exact restaurants and delivers the same thing to each one giving them recipe cards saying your customers will love this. Just makes the place serving I don't know Avacado salad seem that much more authentic and family owned. It s good if you want a lot to eat. Portions are big and fill up the plate. This is an enthusiastic 5 STARS!!! The place looks a bit run down and not fancy, but it's an authentic family restaurant that turns out solidly delicious Mexican dishes. The rice, an often overlooked side dish, was so good...I saw people next to us order dishes of them in addition to the rice and beans that comes with the entrees. After I ate all of the rice off my plate, my kid's plate, and my husband's plate...I had to stop myself. The rice was so flavorful, I would have had two more servings if my stomach was my exploding. The carne asada, chicken enchiladas, and halibut fish tacos were also very good. Our table fo 4 people ate about 6 orders of salsas and guacamole. They kept refilling the chips (which were warm and crispy), so we felt we needed to eat more and not waste their hospitality. LOL. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for solidly good, authentic Mexican food at a family restaurant. read more

We're not talking cutting gourmet Mexican food here! This is traditional, hand painted walls, little booths etc! We are vegan, we asked the waitress if the beans were vegan. Turns out there are refried , black and kidney bean options all vegan! We went with the spinach enchilada and avocado tostada with black beans. All came hot and just aS we expected. The wait staff was so pleasant and made sure we had everything we needed! I gave this restaurant a lower score befoRRe because se off thE attitude of the wait staff. There are so many great things about this place, but I knock a star for its lack of cleanliness. The flavor is also very basic, but still delicious. I had three tacos - two carne asada and one pollo - with rice and beans. The tacos fell apart while eating them, but other than that they were good. The complimentary chips and salsa were super tasty. This place is good and has some really good flavors. Just have to order the right things. Would recommend! read more

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the yamhill county. Extremely consistent and they respect individual freedoms.

I just have to say I have been coming here for over 20 years and never had a problem until tonight. Me and my daughter came in after dinner rush we ordered a bean and cheese burrito and a kids quesadilla ... it was $29. We ordered and within 30 seconds they brought out my daughters quesadilla which had obviously been microwaved not even a minute later they brought out my burrito. Weird. The food was bland whatever I almost nearly finished and I pull out a long black hair. My hair was up so I know it's not mine. The waitress came and asked how it was and I told her about the hair. She did not apologize she did not take it off the check which is whatever. At that point I just wanted to pay and get out of there. $29 for a burrito with a hair and a kids quesadilla. This place reminds we of Juan Colorado's. We went there two nights ago and the waiter was AMAZING. He was funny and very on top of our table. He was seriously the highlight of the night. We had a group of 6 and we all had margaritas. The margaritas came out fast and they tasted wonderful. The food is average. If you need a cheap but large meal that is decent this would be the place to go. I had a taco and enchilada and it was good but a little bland. The rest of the table had a mix of things like burritos, tacos, and enchiladas. Everyone seemed to enjoy their time. Horrible watery salsa! Now I got that out of the way, know that Ixtapa is an old school, two taco, beans and rice kind of place. No fancy ingredients, e.g., shredded Iceberg lettuce on the tacos. Nothing is extraordinary, but it works. What earns it three stars is value as the portions are large. The Huevos Rancheros could have filled two people with small appetites. The base sauce for the Huevos and enchilada dish was meh at best. The chips that complemented to terrible salsa were very good. The younger girl (30s maybe?) tried to charge us for an extra meal, thinking we wouldn't notice, also charged us $10 for a small side of beans/ rice and three slices of avocado for a baby. (An entire burrito for an adult is about $10). She was super dishonest and it was obvious what was happening. I tried nicely to talk with her about it and she was really rude. The tortillas were great, but the rest was tasteless and clearly not Mexican food. We ordered the pork carnitas, which is traditionally fried chunks of Pork roast served dry with tortillas, beans and rice. What they served was thin strips of maybe "pork" simmering in a beef gravy with tons of onions. Yuck! Everything was cut into thin strips Like Chinese food. Next, I feel compelled to mention our fajitas. How can you go wrong with fajitas, right? Thin strips of meat with the normal onions and peppers, but it was tasteless. No spices at all. Definitely underrated for a Newberg Mexican Restaurant. I come her quite often for their Margarita specials (their margs are the best), and the food is absolutely great, no different than any other large portioned, quick service mexican place out there, which is exactly what we all love about Mexican places, right? The chips and salsa come fast and come often, and the food satisfies with leftovers to take home. Yelp has shown me that you cannot trust people from out of town who want to compare everything to what they have "where they come from" I have eaten Mexican food all over California from a taco cart, to a hole in the wall, to a $30 meal on the beachfront in San Diego and Im here to tell you, there is no difference. read more

I'm giving the extra star because the people were very friendly, welcoming, and funny. The service was relatively slow but that is based on my own personal preference and I don't think too many other people would mind too much. Anyways, the food: Ixtapa burrito- ok I guess, definitely a no-go from someone that lived in Cali for several years, but decent for those that are used to the usual Mexican American food. when coming back from our weekend in the OR wine country, hubby and I happened upon this little hole in the wall mexican joint. a little skeered cuz it didn't have the fanciest of facades ... and very much more in the mood for a "sammich" (direct quote) ... we were pleasantly surprised. Ixtapa was very authentic. I ordered the Burrito Espinaca which was filled with yummy veggies and smothered in a yummy green tomatilla sauce and lots of cheese.
