Admittedly, many of their items are frumpy (at least in my opinion), but they have some cool pieces, you just have to look for them. Staff are friendly and nice and their change rooms are beautiful (looks a little like a boudoir). Joanne's is in the Westgate Shopping Centre. Lots of free parking.

The beverage tumblers and travel accessories always interest me. I like looking at unusual cleaners, such as down wash. It's all good in my books. I also like looking at the footwear. Prices are high though, with regular prices from $299. However, they do have sales here and there where you can snag some Fluevogs for as low as $149. Now my beef with this one and only Ottawa location is that the smallest size that they carry is a 6. The sales people confirmed that they don't get 5's and 5.5's which usually go out west or to some Toronto stores. Well, I'm a 5 so that makes me sad :( That being said, the sales people here are really friendly and nice. So if you have small feet like me you'll have to buy online or go to a store in Toronto or the West Coast. However, it's nice to be able to go to this brick and mortar store to at least look at styles in person and feel the materials before buying online. I would totally up my rating if they carried my size. Oh and for men with size 13 feet, you are in the same situation as me for Fluevogs in Ottawa. The salespeople there told me they don't carry men's 13's either.

This place used to be another shoe store for the longest time, so it's cool to see the building being used to the same purpose. The interior is super awesome. They have really fun and cool artwork everywhere and a huge neon lights sign that says "The House of Uncommons". There's fun little touches like tiny robots and dinosaurs all over the store as well, and although the shoes may be high end, this place is certainly not snobby or uncomfortable. Staff are happy to sit and chat shoes, and let you try on whatever you like. They're happy to make suggestions and are basically just awesome people. The shoes are a bit on the crazy side (John Fluevog is a Canadian designer with a fun and quirky eye), but there's absolutely some more everyday shoes there as well. The heels are super comfortable, and I like how much personality you can show with their shoes. They also carry a fantastic men's selection as well as handbags, socks and messenger bags. If you've got a love of shoes, or are looking for something unique, make sure you check this place out. It may cost you a pretty penny (bags are $200-$400, shoes are anywhere from $90-$500), but the experience and the quality is worth it.

I'm glad Ottawa has some clothing stores with styles outside the GAP, AE, Old Navy, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with those stores but they're pretty boring. Schad carries a nice balance of North American and European brands. The unfortunate thing about some of the North American brands is that they've been run into the ground since the Jersey Shore phenomenon! Brands like Ed Hardy and Affliction are carried here and unfortunately Dom Rebel (based out of Montreal) has been styling a lot of shirts like them recently. Some of the other brands that I'm glad they have include Diesel, Energie, Sand and J Lindeberg. It's not for everyone but I do get complimented regularly. I believe there is a slight mark up on these brands compared to some of the other stores I've been in that carry these lines in Toronto and Montreal but it's not that much and the store owner and the staff are super friendly and super helpful. To get an idea, Chantel (the store owner) once tried on a dress for me that I was purchasing for a friend to give me an idea of what it would look like while being worn! That's pretty damn awesome!
