Went to get my tennis racket restrung at the Mapleview Sporting Life. The guy at the service shop, Alex, is an ignorant , arrogant, know-nothing asshole. He called me TWICE to say he didn't agree with my selected strings and tension. The nerve! I had to remind him that his opinion does not matter and his only role is to carry out the instructions on the work order. Socially clueless, presumptuous, self important and incompetent. Stay away! i wish I can post zero but there isn't a button as such I bought a pair of snow boot (Bogs) for my son 5 days ago. He was in school that day. So he could only able to try it at home but the Size was too small. So, I took it back to return. It was a very humiliating and insulting experience which I have never encountered before The customer service lady - Casillda, said there is dirt on the side .. (there isn't any .. I wish I can pose photos here to show) Her voice was quite loud. I was basically scolding by her in the beginning . I said the shoes bottom has no dirt, new ...the corner side might have dust .. then those must from your store as it was on Display .. she insisted those little dust are dirt and accused me the pair was wore and she meant I lie... I was so disappointed that being a customer simply take an item to return can result in such humiliation. I have been a great supporter for Sportinglife .. our winter jackets.. winter gears we buy from them.. just for this month, I bought 4 pair of shoes there for my family .. it is really disappointing that I am such a loyal customer is treated as such I will never go back again I am thinning to take my other shoes purchased recently to return them all Do u like to spend money on a business to buy humiliation? Terrible service. I ordered a set of skis and bindings online. The day after, I received an email that they were out of stock, despite the website having them in stock. In the email, I received a 10% discount for a next order. Went to buy another set of skis and received the message that my code had been used already. Because the website showed the items in stock in my local store, I called and asked if they could put them aside for me to pick them up the day after as I was going skiing that day, and they said yes. The day after, I call again to make sure they had them and was told again yes. When I went to the store, they had the skis but no bindings. People seem to be trained to answer questions but not think beyond that and provide real good customer service. read more

I have always associated Sporting Life with people with trust funds who like to ski, lol. The store focuses on what I think the retail industry calls "outdoor active wear." Think The North Face, Arc'teryx, Marmot, etc. Think $80 for a t-shirt, but oh it will keep you warm, and dry, and odour-free, and gives you SFP 50 protection! This store is not my jam because other than shovelling snow off my driveway, I do not engage in strenuous physical activity outdoors. This store is also not my jam because I like bargains (as in I won't even get out of bed for anything less than 50% off). That being said, if you like to ski, hike, climb, camp, etc. and have money to spend, you might like this place. Their selection is vast and admittedly the stuff they sell is good quality. Why the heck do I even go there, you ask? Well, I do like their "fashion sportswear" and casual dresses. Think Lole, Prana, and FIG. I'm always hopeful that I'll score something on clearance! It hasn't happened yet, but maybe one of these days... I have never had a problem with service here. Staff greet me and smile and then leave me alone. Exactly what I want. Once I tried on something and it was too big and they offered to check to see if one of the Toronto stores had it in a smaller size that they could get transfered over (they are the only Sporting Life in Ottawa). I wasn't in love with it, so I declined, but I appreciated the offer. They also have a huge selection of Canada Goose apparel, if you are into that. The store is at Lansdowne Park, so there's a paid parking lot (that's pricey and a bit of a zoo) or street parking (if you can find it). read more

If you're looking for downhill racing gear, do not go to this place!!! I thought I was getting my daughter top racing gear with expert advice, instead I got arrogance and they treated me like I was incompetent. They wouldn't explain to me what she needed or why, their "expert" boot fitter, Chris, sold me boots for almost 1K that are too narrow for my daughter and whatever they did to them to alter them to her foot just made it worse. I also bought Dynastar skis from him but he just guessed which ones would fit, he really has no clue what he's doing. The store manager, Dan, talks about him as though he walks on water but I think that guy shouldn't even be working there, let alone on the national team!!! This place is awful. Staff are rude and cold, unless they think you're going to spend lots! I came here before my gym session, hoping to treat myself to a new jacket, but was instead treated to a surly team of unhelpful salespeople. They ignored me at every turn, and I had to hunt down two salespeople before I could even get a fitting room. When I finally did get in, I asked for another size, but was told by the saleswoman "It doesn't come in any larger sizes". I was appalled by how rude that comment was, and found my size on the floor not two minutes later. When I asked for clarification for the price, she just scoffed, and asked if it was something I could afford in a very condescending tone. I saw that same saleswoman later, bending over backwards to help another better dressed customer. The cashier was no better, he was pushy and aggressively tried to get me to sign up for their card. Despite my expressed my disinterest, he kept pushing. While I understand that managers can be adamant on signup numbers, it's no reason to harass your customers. Overall, this place reeks of snobbery and contempt, and unless you are a well dressed, thin, upper-class appearing person, the service you will get here is horrendous. I felt uncomfortable throughout this entire experience, and would not recommend this place. Shop elsewhere if you would like to keep your dignity intact. read more

Custom bike seat fitters are good - staff wise, otherwise steer clear!

The service at sporting life is as aggressive as it is unhelpful and unprofessional. Be prepared to be pounced on by a bunch of no-nothing know-it-all 19-22 year olds with thick bro/valley girl accents and a completely see-through goal of making as much commission for themselves as possible. Was immediately told to "completely disregard any advice you've received anywhere else because no other stores know what they're talking about". I'm not sure if treating people like they're stupid and immediately crapping all over the competition is the best way to sell overpriced designer crap, but it was certainly effective in immediately losing the credibility of the salesperson and the store more broadly. There a million ways to serve a customer without coming off as a smug d-bag It's hard to trust the advice of smarmy people who are obviously just trying to sell you overpriced, brand-name gear that think price is a reflection of quality and utility. Shop somewhere else if you're more serious about sports than you are about designer labels, as most places are not nearly up there own you know what as Sporting Life is read more

I am beyond irritated with the pretentious, snotty staff. This store is the exact same years later, there is this attempt at highbrow culture that makes staff look foolish, and you always feel like your inconveniencing someone. There are many problems, often your treated like your intention is to steal, I'm not sure if they have a high rate of theft and this explains it, but you can't treat everyone who walks in that way. I've read accounts of similar experiences and spoken to countless people who've shopped there and it's almost always the same opinion. Manager was actually trying to explain to me protocol for not having a chip on a credit card and apparently that's showing government issued ID that only she can verify as legitimate. I actually have no problem with this, it's actually the stink she raised about it and the way she made us feel like it was a big deal that required 3 staff members...for a credit card...with no chip. Never once was anyone rude to staff on our end, but she kept asking the cashier if the situation was ok..then cutting me off when I spoke..so given we were kind and the manager wasn't let me explain that we could've refused and caused grief for them, but chose not to. 1. no you don't have to show it, legally, unless it's unsigned or it's to verify for shipping for example, If the card is signed its the signature that needs to be matched from paper to card. I verified this fact to be sure again. MasterCard had a form to report businesses who do this. 2. chip technology is a couple of years old. We had other cards with chips but she wouldn't let me speak to offer another one or it could've been quickly rectified. Don't act like it's sketchy, chill. 3. think about the logic here, you can tap a stolen credit card never showing the name on it, not show government ID apparently and they're ok with this, otherwise they treat you like it's a lockdown situation and cut you off when you're speaking, honestly it took every ounce of restraint to not put the manager in her place. Do better, be kinder and stop talking, you may learn something. I don't know how this store stays in business at Lansdowne. If management reads this, please not that every purchase pays your wages, every single purchase, and this attitude is how stores fold, leaving you and your staff unemployed. I'll drive the extra mileage to get to MEC thanks. read more

When I was going to the fitting room, the store assistant demanded that I leave my backpack with a laptop and other valuable items outside. That's how little respect the store has for the customers. Went in on a quiet evening. There were a million staff on duty. About five of them smiled or nodded at me, a couple others failed to acknowledge me entirely, but all of them continued their conversations with one another while I looked at a very specific item I needed help getting (a shoe size). I stood with the display shoe in my hand while looking straight at two employees having a conversation. Decided to give my business to someone else, it's a shoe I can get other places. Worst customer service. I've been trying to order an item from another Sporting Life store for a month now, and ends up that my order was never put through. Every time I call the Ottawa store I am entirely disregarded, and have to go through 3-4 different employees while waiting on the line for 45+ min. I'm waiting on the phone as I'm writing this (third time I'm calling this month for the same issue), it's been 30 minutes. Competence and professionalism is completely lacking. Sporting life is worst online shopping place- I purchased Patagonia Jacket online- 11 days after my order still shows Processing on the online order page. I phoned them several times to follow up- they promise to follow the order and call me back that never happened- last phone call the girl on the customer service hang up the phone without apology on the late order preparation- finally they were able to locate the order as it went to their Calgary location. another 1 week for the order to arrive, then the big surprise: the jacket is covered with Mould and dirty- I contacted the online service, another very hostile agent asked me to send Pictures on their e- mail and they come back to me within 48 hours. it has been 7 days now, no call back or response to my e- mail. very unprofessional , reckless, like a scam shop- I contacted Patagonia, surprisingly Sporting life is not a registered dealer- they don't know how they get their products - My conclusion never ever buy from Sporting life online - the worst experience ever. read more

I went looking for shoes at Sporting Life. I found one that I liked that was clearly labelled on sale ($159 instead of $199). I tried on various sizes for 20 minutes and then decided to buy. When purchasing, the price came up as $199 since the sale apparently had ended. Despite clearly being labelled on sale on the actual shoe I was buying and complaining this was misleading and against the Scanner Accuracy Code of Conduct supported by the Retail Association of Canada, the store employees refused to honour the marked price. I refused to buy the product and will never be back to this store again. read more

My husband and I went to pick out a winter coat for his birthday on the Sunday before last. They didn't have his size in the style he wanted so they offered to get one delivered to their store. They said it would take a few weeks. Surprisingly Tuesday they called to say it was in, but we were leaving the next day to go out of town. I asked if I can put a down payment on it to be held until we got back Monday (yesterday) and the girl said they don't take payments on the phone. But they will hold it. And if I needed it to be held longer, just call she said. We called and it's no longer there. That's great customer service. read more

I'm really not sure if things have changed that much since some of the older reviews on here from 2015, but I found the staff at this store to be overall amazing. I called prior to visiting the store for the first time and had requested a jacket that I saw on their website. The extremely helpful associate Tom informed me that they did not have that jacket at their store but he would get it transferred over to his location free of charge and no with no obligations. I figured I'd go visit the store before the jacket arrived to see what the store was like. I had 3 associates help me with all my questions during my visit (including Tom), every single one of them were extremely knowledgeable and patient. They provided instructions on what I Would Need and what I Should not get for apparel. There were other customers in the store too and they were eager to assistance them as well without making me feel like I was taking up all their time. Excellent Service, I would recommend that you give this particular store a try if you are in the area. read more
