Have you ever heard of the "Seattle Freeze"? The term refers to the difficulty in actually dating or getting to know people who live in Seattle. I grew up in the Seattle area and graduated from Mount Rainier HS, so while I spent about 13 years in California, I wasn't really an outsider when I moved back to Seattle. Still its hard to meet and get great dates in Seattle. The single women in Seattle don't seem to spend much time in bars or clubs. This is where It's Just Lunch (IJL) comes in as a great service to get people together.
I've tried out some of the online dating sites like eharmony or okcupid and after investing (wasting) many long hours of filling in profile information, answering endless what-if questions, uploading pictures, and manually screening matches, those online services feel like a tremendous waste of time. It takes a long time to actually get the process to a point where you get a date and meet a woman in person.
One of the best aspects of the IJL service is that they take all the hassle out of finding and setting up a date. They often say they are a professional wing woman and that is definitely one way to describe their help. They find potential matches and approve the match with both parties and then coordinate the meeting. You get to meet someone without giving up any personal information. It's pretty difficult to get stalked by your IJL dates unless you give your date your information. IJL will always maintain your confidentiality. You get a chance to meet and date someone and find out if you like them in an extremely low risk environment. You give out far less information initially than you would need to divulge with an online service.
If you have a lot of time to waste and are really saving your pennies, then IJL may not be a good fit. However, if you're a busy tired professional trying to squeeze in a personal life while investing a lot of time in your career, IJL is a great option. IJL isn't cheap, which is somewhat intentional. When there is a significant cost for a service, only those who are truly serious are willing to sign up. If you do sign up, the investment you made helps ensure you make dating more of a priority in your life.
When I first joined IJL, I was pretty concerned about the minimum dates level being only 12 dates. My coordinator assured me that getting more than 12 dates would not be a problem and she was right. In my first membership with IJL, I probably had more than 30 dates and I could have done more if I wanted. I have to say that the vast majority of the women I met were serious and generally interesting in some way. The matches got better when I made more of an investment in providing good feedback on the dates and adjusting my match criteria as we went along. The more feedback and the better feedback you give, being brutally honest, the better your experience with IJL will be. I ultimately renewed my membership because of the service. In total, so far, I've probably been on 50 or so dates and only a handful were really crazy. But you know what, even those disaster dates were valuable. I got lots of great conversation stories from those dates. The bad ones are far more entertaining to talk about than the decent or average dates. :)
I was also one of the first people to try out the new group dinner membership. I think the group dinner option is an excellent way to optimize your dating time and money. You get to meet several people at the same time and the chances are good that you will like someone. As a bonus you might make a friend as well. I've met a couple of the other guys that turned out to have similar interests and might make a good wing-man as well.
I'm fairly surprised at seeing some of the low ratings here on yelp. If you read them, you'll notice that most of them are from people who didn't actually use the IJL service. Either their story is third hand from a friend complaining or they interviewed or looked at the service but didn't actually try it out.
It is true that judged in a critical light, the women of IJL can come off as a bit aggressive when in their sales recruiting mode. I generally have found that their aggressive recruiting stems from their passion about what they do. The more and better people they recruit into the system the better matches they are able to offer their existing clients. They are passionate about clients finding good matches. Their primary business isn't sales, it's getting people to meet and that's where they excel. I think IJL could benefit from some sales consulting services to help them be a bit smoother in their process.
Have I found my perfect woman through IJL? No, not yet. But I value all the dates I had and the tremendous experience and everything I learned about dating and myself in the process. If I eventually do find my perfect match, I'll have to up the rating to 5 stars. I just don't like to give out 5 stars for anything. In my experience, the women of IJL genuinely care about me as a person. read more
