I joined It's Just Lunch in early September, and I was super excited to meet great guys through a selective service and find "the one." Unfortunately my experience was totally terrible and I decided to terminate my membership after little over a month.
Strike 1: during my initial interview with the matchmaker, I asked whether photos were used in the service. She said no, unequivocally. Then, to my surprise and shock, a few weeks later I received an email from another IJL staff member about a *even more exclusive service* that did offer photos. Here's the galling part: they weren't inviting me to join that more exclusive service, oh no. To the contrary, they said they had a potential candidate in mind for me, who WAS part of that service, and they were asking me if I would be willing to share photos of ME with HIM, but not vice versa!!! In other words, not only did the matchmaker mislead me during my initial interview, but to top it off, I was being totally disrespected by being asked to provide photos of myself without getting the other person's in return. Unbelievable. I had a phone conversation with the manager of that more exclusive service, which was a complete waste of time. She had no idea why I was upset, it was like talking in circles. On top of which, she offered no validation or attempts to repair this failure of customer service and loss of trust.
Strike 2: after the above debacle happened, I had already lost trust in the service, and I was proceeding with IJL with caution. For my 3rd match (fyi the 1st one was average and the 2nd one was better, but the guy never called me), they said they had found a great guy for me. When I asked where he lived, they said he technically lived outside Seattle boundaries. But then why was I being matched with him, given that I gave EXPLICIT feedback about wishing to date someone in my area? I brought this up but it didn't seem like they really heard me or recognized my preferences. Then, I went on the date and it was absolutely horrible. My worst fears were confirmed - I was not at all attracted to him, and he was zero my type, in terms of his personality and other factors. It was a complete bust and waste of my time (though I knew it was coming - when I quizzed the staff person who set us up, she said "Oh, he's totally cute and we think a great match for you". But he absolutely was not, and there is NO WAY a trained service with my best interests at heart could possibly think we were compatible with each other).
Then... I came to Yelp to read reviews. Dear Yelp. Would that I had checked you sooner. I learned how my experience was not unique, and I decided to meet with another service, Simply Matchmaking, who told me that they had deliberately moved away from the business model IJL had, where you were *guaranteed* a match each month, forcing the service to reduce standards just to hit quota marks for people. After that, I was like, I'm DONE!
Hoping this review is useful to others. I wish I'd known sooner. At least I learned from other reviews on here, so that when I cancelled my membership I made it extremely clear that I wasn't going to be talked into staying.
My advice: go with Simply Matchmaking (in person) and The League (app). read more
