Only place I know within reasonable driving distance near me where you don't have to share a court with strangers or sit around and wait your turn to play tennis or pickleball. Who wants that? Of course, you need a paid membership here for that privilege. Membership is tiered and you can pay just to play tennis or pickleball and the highest tier allows access for all the courts, including the squash and racketball ones inside. With a paid membership and through their app, you can book a time slot to reserve your court. Hardest times to get are around 5 pm and up on weeknights as those are considered prime times. Weekends during the day are usually easier to get as well, although after 7 pm the courts are open to the public and everyone in LA comes out and it's the wild west. Everyone floods the best courts - 5 and 6 which are dedicated pickleball courts, the only 2 in the compound - and then you get a real spectacle of players, from average to really good players. There is an elitist expectation it seems that only good players are allowed to play on these two courts, which is just laughable and leaves a stink of pickleball snobiness all around. But oh well. Just as a side rant here: anyone can play pickleball and be good at it. You don't have to be incredibly athletic to excel. Just go out and watch and you'll know what I'm talking about. Another annoyance is that eiquette and basic courtesy are often compromised during these open hours. Some times, you'll have a few rude idiots that just walk through your court instead of coming in from the outside. I don't know what it is, but pickleball seems to attract a lot of people who lack self awareness! Everything is on the honor system as there's nobody there to really enforce your reservation, so sometimes you'll get some who play over their allotted time. Just kindly ask them to leave and usually they comply. Then there's the real rare occasion where they give you attitude for some reason. Just hilarious. Imagine fighting over a court that doesn't belong to you? Lmfao! The whole compound is fenced in so you have to go through the main entrance to get in. I saw one guy jump over the fence once to get inside. How desperate are you to play, bro? Just pay for a membership like any other productive member of society. At any rate, all the other courts other than 5 and 6 are tennis courts that can be converted in half to 2 pickleball courts (there are movable nets on each court). The other fenced courts on the north end are all dedicated tennis courts. Inside the facility, there are some squash and racketball spaces that seem to always be occupied. There's even a gym inside for members, but the equipment there is pretty basic and sparse. As for making reservations, the app acts funky sometimes and you can't get a reservation even though there are open spots. You just have to keep trying or call the shop and they'll help out. Other than a few annoyances mainly from the non members, it's a great place to play tennis and pickleball day and night! read more

This review pertains specifically to the pro shop -- I've taken my racquet to get strung a handful of times. Itennis is the closest shop to me, and I don't feel like going on the freeway to a place like Racquet Doctor, which offers better service. Spoiler alert: I'll probably be going out of my way to go to another shop :) 1. First time I took my racquet, I was explicitly told by the guy at the shop, "We will call you when the racquet is done, so that you can pick it up." A week goes by. As someone who has strung racquets before, I am aware of how fast it takes to string it. Even with a large amount of racquets to string and a stringer coming in only a few times a week, a week is excessive. Did I receive a call? Nope. I had to call myself 10 days after dropping it off, after realizing they weren't going to. 2. I very recently took my partner's racket in. I gave them my strings, filled out their form, and was told to pick it up on Friday. Mind you, bringing in your strings means that you only pay for labor (which at $20 a pop, is pretty ridiculous considering their poor service). What do they do? Charge me 39 bucks. When my partner called, they said, "Sorry, there is nothing we can do, and you didn't fill out the part on the form that says 'Brought in own strings." Oh, forgot to mention-- that part is under the 'for office use' section of the form. Not only did they mess up, but they also put the blame on us. LOL. The person who helped me when I brought in the racquet (or should I say, doesn't help much) is a heavily tattooed woman who sometimes works at the desk. If you need to bring your racquet to get strung there, try to spell things out, because they might need it. Thank god for chargebacks. *I forgot to mention, when asked about their error and how they would fix it, she referred us to talk to the manager and included some interestingly ableist language that I won't repeat here for the coworker's sake. ITennis should reconsider their customer service practices at the Arroyo Seco location, considering how much they charge members (I'm not one, and I would never be, despite knowing some of the coaches there are good). Consider how a company or organization operates when their most client-facing aspect of their business is this inept, rude, and unpleasant and management says "that's fine." read more

ITennis in South Pasadena is just waste of time. The coaches here are just terrible. They let the kids pretty much spend majority of class playing game that are not tennis related. And especially for beginners, the coach will rarely give them any chance to try to hit the ball. The coaches are extremely slow in feeding the balls and rarely teaches the forms for kids. There are coaches who are late to the lesson, and the reason is them chatting with other coaches in another court, and didn't seem to care to show up class 10-15 mins late. I have been taking weekly group classes with iTennis Arroyo Seco for nearly two years now. I've had the chance to take classes with several of the coaches (Sunny, Chris, Sal, Joey, etc.) and I have nothing but praise for the coaching from everyone in this organization. iTennis Arroyo Seco has been a fantastic place to meet like-minded people (pro and casual players) who all have a similar love for tennis. I was a relatively new tennis player (picked up a tennis racquet for the first time mid-2019) and knew I needed a place to find people to hit with and tennis pros who could provide feedback so I could continue to improve my tennis skills. Everyone at this location has always been so welcome and friendly, so much so that it has become like another home away from home. iTennis Arroyo Seco has been a really great "safe space" to learn tennis as well. I'm typically a shy learner who hesitates to try new things for fear of looking foolish doing something new in front of others. However, all the coaches have consistently been great in tailoring their coaching and feedback style so that it fits best for each person's learning and motivation styles. I've never been made to feel foolish even when I've made newbie mistakes; I've only received positive feedback that has always made me feel encouraged and motivated to keep coming back for more. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning or improving their tennis game to check out iTennis Arroyo Seco! NOTE: I saw that there were two recent unflattering comments specifically calling out Coach Sunny for being unfair/unequal with some of his students, especially towards Asian-Americans. I struggle to accept the validity of the statements claiming that Sunny is anything less than a stellar coach and person. I am also Asian-American and I have never felt that Sunny was unfair or unkind to me. I have also never seen him neglect / play favorites with any of his students. The claim that he is unequal with his Asian-American students (or anyone for that matter) is absurd. I have enjoyed taking group classes with Sunny for nearly two years and I have recently started taking private lessons with him. I look forward to taking more classes with him (group and private) in the future! FIRST: My partner and I have been taking weekly lessons with Sunny for over a year now and could not be happier and more satisfied. He's an incredibly attentive instructor, carefully and strategically adjusting his teaching style to our individual needs and abilities - no small feat I assure you. We've also met and played with a couple of his other students over the past year, and it's obvious that he is well-loved. More than a coach, Sunny has become our #1 cheerleader, genuinely eager to hear about our wins both on the court and off. I'm surprised by the less-than-stellar reviews of him here and, frankly, find them to be quite baffling (especially because I myself am Asian). They do not reflect the coach that I and so many have come to know well and respect. SECOND: There is a cool little dog park and a hidden skate park next to the courts. So happy I took my daughter out of the Itennis program. The instructors were mean and almost discouraged her from playing altogether. Since we quit Itennis she now loves tennis and is rapidly excelling. I am not a fan of these people and their grumpy mean condescending teachers. I really have to agree with the other two stars on customer service, and agree with the 5 stars on the trainers. That being said, I may change my vote in the future if things change there. I'm a fairly new member, and when I was signing up, I could have walked out of there and NO ONE would have cared. I waited about 15 minutes without acknowledgement to get to inquire about membership signup. I didn't get a smile or a nod or anything. Really felt that this was poor customer service. Having heard that this is something I would need to deal with there (from an old trainer who used to be there) I decided to continue. No one showed me the grounds nor introduced me to how things are done there, in regards to signing up for classes, or fees. The guy at the front desk just handed me a paper and read what was on the paper, which I had already read in waiting to sign up. No looking up from the computer to talk to me at all. I explained that I was a new member trying to get back into tennis after a 10 year hiatus and wanted to meet new people to play with. A woman behind the counter, interrupted my question and told me to sign up for the clinic that happened to cost 33ish a session. The customer service is SO bad, the people I've had to deal with, I can't believe this people haven't found any other job. They look so unhappy, and they push that onto the members and new potential members. I'd be ok with it if I didn't have to interact with them, but it's mandatory to sign in as soon as you enter. Now, the prices: Fairly expensive chunk to sign up (one time fee) and then you have to sign up and pay for fairly expensive classes. (Oh, and as a member, you get a whopping 15 percent discount, same as the non-member early bird discount. Members get an additional 5 percent off. What's the 250 initial charge for?) There isn't anyone there except members, and that huge chunk of change that I payed for signing up doesn't exactly get compensated for with the 15 percent discount. It's also about three hundred dollars a month if you take a class once a week. One of the reasons I gave this a 2 star is because I've belonged in other clubs in the past that are much less expensive (even accounting for inflation), with enormously more cheerful people who treat you a little better as an incoming member. Now the positives: As for the trainers, I completely agree with the 5 star ratings. I just wish we could assess the business differently than the coaches. I've had one assessment lesson, with Genya, and I have to say he's amazing. I've heard other fantastic things about the coaches, and I am willing to reassess in a month's time. If this doesn't improve, and show itself to be worth the 300+ dollars a month I'll be paying, I'll go off and do something else with my money...(there are meet up groups that are free, and at the same ability...FREE!) Sunny is an excellent tennis instructor and a great human being. After one year of lessons with Sunny, starting at 34 years old, and never having played tennis before, my game has skyrocketed! I have been taking the weekly group classes since May 2021. I find this tennis center to be a great place to develop my tennis game. The staff creates a great fun environment to learn and develop my tennis game. I have had coaches, Jason (Beginner 2.0-3.0 - (1) 6 week session) and Sunny (Intermediate 3.0-4.0 - (1) 6 week session and currently (1) 8 week session). Both coaches were excellent in creating an environment where I was and still am able to continuously learn, develop, and strengthen my tennis game. Both coaches are not only personable and caring, but they both help me identify my opportunity areas where my game is lacking. The beginner session is a great way to work on mechanics while the intermediate session helps develop strategy and is more competitive. Coach Sunny is currently helping me stay consistent with my overhead smashes and the timing of the smashes. With 3 weeks left in the current session, I have already enrolled again for another 8 weeks to continue my development with Coach Sunny. Thank you to both coaches for helping me stay on top of my game and continually pushing me to be better. read more

This center was the only iTennis facility that actually had staff picking up phone calls. My review is geared towards iTennis Arcadia camp but as far as I was informed, their coaches teach at different locations. This business falsely advertises the coach for summer camp. Whoever they put on the website (in this case, Salvador Ramos) is not the one who's teaching the camp. The owner, John Letts, explicitly replied to me on an email when I sent in a complaint. And the complaint that I've made is regarding an unknown coach that they refused to release his name. First of all, there was an incident that our son got hit accidentally by another coach at the camp. His arm was very seriously bruised. By night he had a fever. I sent an email Thursday morning and mentioned about how we weren't informed during pickup that an accident happened nor was there any first aid, e.g. ice pack. By Friday morning our son felt ok to go back to camp. When my parents sent him there, they informed the "fake salvador" about the bruise and that if our son felt too tired, to please let him take it easy or call me to pick him up. The response gave was "why is he even here", cold and stern. Why? Because even school policy is if a child does not have any symptoms within 24 hours, then the child can go to school. We paid for the camp, therefore, he can. There were no apologies from lack of communication with an injury. And that still wouldn't have triggered me to look up and down for ways to make complaints about. Here comes a part that made our family furious - towards the end of the class, our son accidentally stepped on another an older camper's backpack. The camper was very agitated and pinched our son's back. So our son responded with self defensive mechanism and pushed the kid away. That's when "fake Salvador" spotted them and snatched our son's racket out of his hands, yelled at him to "tell you mom to never sign you up for this camp again" and said something equivalent to you've been fired or expelled. So our son started crying by how mean the coach was acting. The worst is fake Salvador then said "now you're crying like a baby girl" to an 8 year old. When my parents picked him up from camp, they FaceTimed me and our son was crying non-stop saying the coach was mean and scary and that he never wants to play tennis again. iTennis handles conflicts with abusive and humiliating languages. The coach is basically a bully and discriminates against girls by insinuating that girls are weaker and they would be those to cry. Parents, this camp experience will scar children for life. Apart from the way our child was treated, the coach was constantly threatening all other kids "I'll call your mom" whenever he cannot control a situation. So it was not a unique situation. Their office still has not given any concrete resolution to us after 3 weeks until we went to the center in person on the weekend to search for the real Salvador to get them to response after at least 2 phone calls and 3 emails that I sent. The only responsive they have given is we are going to hear what that coach has to say then to believe what our child's "one sided story" quoted from their manager Patricia. read more

My family (husband and daughter) and I have been taking classes and lessons from Sunny and iTennis at Arroyo Seco for over 1 year. We all agree Sunny is a thoughtful, helpful, and professional instructor. In addition, he seems to be a genuinely nice and kind person. We have never seen him disregard, disparage or disrespect anyone. He is never late to our private lessons and respects our free time. We would and have recommended him to our friends and neighbors. In addition private lessons with Sunny has improved all of our skills. He is methodical in his teaching but never pushes me and my complaining when the learning curve gets steep. Great club! I've been playing tennis at this club since 2011. I took group lessons and private lessons. The club is very well run. I take my lessons with Genya Trosman. He is the best. An excellent and patient teacher. I was a beginner and he got me very excited about the game. He also is an all-around very nice guy. I would highly recommend him! My child is attending summer camp here. I got complaints about bored and disengaged teen counselors. Aside from doing full drills and a walk to a local park to play football in 100 degree weather, I think for $450 a week I'd at least hear about great counselors who tried to make the day fun anyway. In addition, it turns out that campers just get on their phones during every break. The counselors leave them alone during lunch. Bottom line is I have to force attendance this week but I've already heard "never again". read more

The areas surrounding Pasadena are filled with lots of tennis courts that are free and easy to find. However, those courts are all first-come, first serve...and I've found that a hassle at times because you just don't know if you're going to get a court or how long you have to wait for one. So alternatively, I found this wonderful place to play tennis. The Arroyo Seco Racquet Club is actually a semi-private club that is open to the public on a walk-in basis for a nominal fee of $20/hour. I've called several times to find out availability, and they have been extremely helpful in letting me know what is available and when they're available. I've even called on the same day and asked them to hold a court for me, which they were kind enough to do! The courts are surrounded in a beautiful setting, and they have 9 courts available! All the courts are well maintained and they have a pro shop so if you're missing anything, you can get it there! What makes this place even better is that they have showers you can use...so after an intense game of tennis (or intense ball chasing session...depending on your skill level, right?), you can get cleaned up and go out! No other facility in the area has this amenity. In summary, even though there is a $20/hour fee, it's well worth it if you call ahead to check on court availability, if you don't want to deal with the hassle of waiting around at the free courts, and you want a place to freshen up after tennis! Plus, everyone that works here has been super friendly and helpful...you really can't expect anything more! read more

The group classes/clinics are a fantastic way to meet new people & get great instruction. iTennis has built an incredible community and provides amazing tennis pros that promote both youth and adult tennis. I've taken lessons & clinics from Mike Ridaoui for the last few years. He's a USPTA Certified Pro and his level of expertise shows in his approach to instruction. He's helped me get my game to the next level (literally USTA ranking next level) and encourages me to continue to progress. The iTennis staff is fantastic, friendly and well organized. If you live near South Pasadena, I can't recommend enough joining this community. My boyfriend and I have been taking weekly group lessons with him for a while now and have had nothing but great experience; he is our favorite! He is professional, friendly and really cares about those in his class. I never experienced that he treated players within the group lesson without respect or unequally. Talking to other group players he is definitely one of the best coaches and when we signed up to continue private lessons in addition to our weekly group class it was very difficult to find a slot since he is so popular among all players at the club! Small classes FTW! Great stretching for the first half of class. The second half of the class consisted of 5 exercises performed for a minute each. They included: jumping sideways through a tire, pushups, step up knee raises, Russian dance, and cheerleader squats. We definitely worked multiple parts of our body and got our sweat on. Then we headed outside for the Sports Performance workout. Our favorite part of the class were the resistance exercises (even though my boyfriend almost made me fly twice). We workout on a daily basis so it was nice to do different exercises our bodies aren't used to. Staff was nice and pleasant to us! read more

This long overdue review comes more than six years after the first time I shared my impressions of iTennis Arroyo Seco Racquet Club in South Pasadena. At that time, I was not aware how fortunate discovery this place is going to be for me, but the years that followed confirmed my initial positive feelings. I was enrolled in group clinics led by different tennis coaches, each of whom was a good instructor making my time well spent. Kudos to Genya Trosman, executive director of tennis, for his part in hiring and overseeing the teaching staff. One professional, Mike Ridaoui, deserves my special praise. From his very first clinic that I attended, Mike showed that he possesses the qualities of a good teacher: comprehensive knowledge, explanatory skills, patience, high expectations, focus, and above all, a healthy human interaction. He manages to provide very useful comments to all of us in these fast-paced classes, while his sense of humor helps with accepting our forced and unforced errors. I benefited even more from Mike's excellent teaching abilities in the last eighteen months while taking private lessons with him. My slow progress on the backhand tested his tolerance and understanding, and he did very well on that difficult test. While he has always been encouraging, getting an objective feedback and evaluation of my tennis performance is an inevitable part of our lessons. As an educator, I deeply appreciate his constructive comments that motivate me to keep learning and practicing instead of spending time being annoyed by my errors. My daughter and I have been taking private lessons with Genya and group lessons for about a year and could not be more pleased! Genya is an outstanding professional who is extremely patient, attentive, encouraging, and experienced in teaching tennis. We learn so much from him and also in playing in the group sessions with the other instructors and players. We've improved so much in a short amount of time and have so much fun! The facilities are so well kept and clean and I love the convenience of the location (next to the dog park, skate park, mini golf). The reason I am giving this place 2 stars is because of my cons story below. But first, the Pros: The staff and facility here seemed nice. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking to get a fun circuit workout with some knowledgeable people (but read on). The tennis courts are in great shape and I like how they have physical therapists that can give you advice on sports-related health. It's cool how this place is located in a big park next to a golf course and such. The Cons: I must tell this one story. When I arrived to the Yelp event, you sign up for things you want to participate in such as tennis lessons, circuit training, and health screenings. Since I didn't know everything I wanted to do and if there was enough space for everyone, I only signed up for the circuit training. After the circuit training was finished, a couple people asked if they could get a health screening and one of the staff said to go right ahead since the PT was available. It didn't seem like they signed up on any list in the beginning since they were asking. Then I asked for a health screening and the staff member said, "Oh, sorry we're full, but you can come next week since it's free." I don't even think he knew who was on the list. They knew I was coming an hour away (from the IE) and couldn't just "come next week." But I think it was obvious they just want me to come back and bring friends or something to pay the facility money for whatever. I felt like I was the product of a marketing scheme and immediately thought to myself, "this is NOT good customer service." Good customer service is making exceptions for your patrons even if it's not really a big exception. But if the customer feels special, more points to you. Furthermore, I was just hanging around the area you can get a health screening to see if I can just tack myself on. When one of the people who wasn't even on the list to get a health screening finished, he told his sister or something that it was her turn. I am 100% sure she wasn't on any list. It seemed like you have to know someone or be related to an employee to get an exception. I felt belittled and marginalized. Based on this story, I would not recommend coming here. I would have given this place 1 star but I don't want to be too harsh since they seemed nice. I don't know if they're nice normally. Management, please don't contact me. Pro Mike Ridaoui is the absolute best, he sees everything you're doing and with the smallest adjustment in your technique will improve your tennis exponentially. He guides your physical and mental capabilities on court, and is in high demand for a reason! Are there some idiosyncrasies? Of course, the pandemic made tennis more popular than ever so you'll need to become a member and sign up for classes early, take advantage of the far parking lot, and experiment with different coaches and clinics to find the ones you like best. read more

Cannot say enough good things about him, Genya, Tomas, AB and the other coaches. I have taken Mike's clinics more times that I can count. Ronda W., I am shocked by your negative and unfair review of tennis clinic coach Mike Ridaoui. I was present when you were standing on the sidelines, and your characterization of what happened (or did not happen) is not at all what I witnessed. You simply stood there, ignoring those of us who were calling to you to join us on the court. Mike came in and immediately started our usual opening drills; he knows that we come early, warm up, and don't want to waste a minute. I don't think he even noticed that a new person was joining the group. If he had, I can tell you that he would have introduced himself and asked your name. In my opinion, your reaction to what you misperceived as rude behavior is over-reaction, childish, and completely unfair to Mike. I can't even begin to figure out how you came up with "bullying." I am sorry you are so unhappy and likely will not be back. Your loss: the clinics here are excellent, which is why so many of us are long-time repeat customers, and Mike Ridaoui is one of the best coaches I've had in my 35 years of playing tennis. read more

I came here for the Yelp fitness event and didn't originally intend on taking a tennis clinic lesson. Originally, my friend and I signed up for the Sports Optimization and F.I.T. circuit training classes and while waiting, a kind eyed dude named Kelly came over and convinced us to try our hand on the court. And so we went. WIthout having an ounce of tennis playing blood coursing through my body, I didn't know who I'd fare. Thankfully, Kelly was an excellent instructor and we actually ended up rallying a little live ball back & forth doubles for a bit at the end. It was more fun than I thought possible. An excellent sport to feel you've actually made progress on even after one session. But of course, having a good instructor is always key.
