We have a sleeper sofa for 10 years and the seat cushions required new foam. We chose Ismael based on some older Yelp reviews. We met Ismael at his home and we immediately felt confident that we had met a professional. He was personable but thoroughly technical when it came to his recommendations. He gave us sample of various foam firmness and he requested we sit on each. We chose extra firm. He explained he needed to order and they should be ready in one week as it was July 4 holiday. Well, a couple of days later July 7 they were ready. I find it amazing an upholsterer can make cushions look and feel brand new. The new cushions are back on the sofa now and they are perfect and even better than the original cushions. Unfortunately, Ismael's trade is a vanishing one. People forget that old can be made to look and feel new again. Do not dispose of older furniture that needs new fabric or foam/stuffing. Contact Ismael and you will not be sorry. Wife - "what's that flaky stuff under your chair?" Me - "what flaky stuff? Uh-oh! Must be from me sitting in these chairs on Zoom calls the last few months!" She - "no worries. I've been meaning to re-upholster them anyway. Let me look into it." Me - "huh? Ok." So that's how we ended up hauling our four tall dining chairs to Ismaels garage cum workshop in Dublin earlier this month. He was the more transparent of the two local businesses we found on Yelp, and his prices were not too outrageous, so we tried him first. Ismael helped us pick out the right type of foam (we chose medium firm) and the right cover (we preferred a left-over fragment vs. ordering something new from the catalog). He said it would take a week (it took 6 days). With labor and materials the total cost was $390, a hundred or so cheaper than buying a new set of chairs from IKEA. Moreover, it felt good making an environmentally friendly choice, and supporting a local business during the COVID pandemic was the right thing to do. But perhaps most importantly, Ismael did a superb job - the missus and I were very happy with the transformation of our drab chairs into something out of the Arabian Nights (see before-after pics). Called 10:07 am, Friday, based on ratings on Yelp. Here's the interaction: Looking in Yelp, for 'auto re-upholstery" - this company had FiVE (legitimate??) STARS I called the #: Male response: "Hello" (Note: no identification of who they are, nor, with whom I was speaking - big flags) My reply: "Hello, what company is this?" Male response: "What company do you want?" My reply: "I'm trying to find a certain company, recommended, that is at least capable of identifying itself, & the person picking up the phone." Male response: "Don't call this number then." He hung up on me. Are you serious! Singularly unappealing individual, if I must say so myself. I again made the call, on a separate line - to ascertain the number was correct, to give him/them the benefit of any doubt. Indeed, it was the CORRECT NUMBER. Ladies & Gentlemen: I was polite and direct. I'm in healthcare - when you p/u an incoming call, you identify your business, or department, AND, your name ... PERiOD ... NO SUBSTiTUTiONS ! ! ! It's business. Period ! ! How can ANY business, that answers a customer inquiry, or call, WiTHOUT identifying - NOT ONLY the business itself, but, equally important, that person answering the phone call itself - expect "ANY" intelligent customer to do business with the same. But, worse yet, to provide a response such as I was given, is unforgivable. Outrageous behavior - I highly recommend one NOT conduct any business with these people. It appears that the YELP recommendations were a farce - something I was banking on, in order to find a legitimate business to repair my auto upholstery. Don't 'blindly' accept YELP's stars !! His knowledge not only of the type of wood, but also of how to best position the fabric/pattern I chose, was outstanding. I picked them up today and they're PERFECT. He also replaced the padding and the weave at the bottom of each chair. The boxed welting also looks great. Perfectly aligned, sewn and crafted. I have to say that I called other shops to have this work done. When some told me that there was an additional charge of $18/yard if I didn't purchase the fabric from them, I was a little turned off. This is not the case with Ismael. He runs his shop from his home but please don't let this deter you. He is very professional. Please consider Ismael for any upholstery needs you may have. We had several pieces of furniture that we needed re-upholstered and Ismael did all of them. he is a real "find." Two of the pieces were very old oak (Mission Style) chairs--one a rocking chair--that had been in storage and needed a great deal of rehabilitation. Ismael not only upsholstered them and fixed the springs in one--he also cleaned up the wood so that they nonw look great. He also made seat cushions for four chairs, and constructed a cushion for a long window seat. Ismael is extremely skilled. He gets his work finished when he says he will, and he was able to pick up the furniture and deliver it (to Pt. Richmond) with no extra charge. Ismael is a lovely person and a great craftsman.
