Beautiful work by local artists but the help leaves a lot to be desired. Unfriendly, and obviously not happy to be working there.

Downstairs in the basement tho...totally differed from the main floor and second floor. Basement...smells...moist lol. There is art down there and other things for sale, but you will smell it the second you get down there. It smells like....an old basement haha Staff is vert friendly and they want to help. Store literally draws you in from the street. The store front is as beautiful as the inside. Just a unique place. It definitely adds to the magic of Main Street...In beautiful and magical Bar Harbor! Imagine kids toys, bird houses, small decorative art, candleholders, and more. There's a rustic and Scandinavian feel about the space. It's a great place to pick up toys or gifts if you want something that's thoughtfully created. The owner protects woodlands by using wood that would otherwise be wasted. We loved our quick little visit to the shop. They also have a large rocking horse that is fun for kids to experience. If I had more room in my luggage, I would've taken home one of those adorable little bird houses.

As Mainers Sherman's stands out as the biggest independent book stores in the state. This…read moreparticular location is the oldest of the state and one of the oldest in the USA in general since they opened way back in 1886. Due to the nature of how long this particular location has been opened some of the areas can feel very crowded depending on how many people are nearby but understandable with how long they've been open. Like other Sherman locations they have more than just books including puzzles, stuffed animals, Knick-knacks/trinkets, and more. My wife is an avid reader and loves checking out every and any bookstore. I appreciate locating them for her so she can do so! While not as much of an avid reader I do appreciate what appears to be a resurgence of physical books and indie book stores. The staff were extremely friendly and prices were reasonable/on par with other locations. This Sherman's has stood the test of time and has provided locals and tourists a spot for the newest and classic favorites for many generations. Worth your time to check it out even if you don't buy anything to make the claim you visited the oldest bookstore in Maine!

Perfect for book lovers, souvenir hunters, or anyone wanting a cozy break from exploring Acadia…read moreNational Park! Walking into Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shop felt like stepping into a classic coastal bookstore you'd see in a movie. It's Maine's oldest bookstore and one of the ten oldest in the U.S., which makes the whole experience feel even more special. Right on Main Street, it's super easy to find while strolling through Bar Harbor, but heads up, parking is mostly street parking and can get tight during peak tourist hours. Inside, there's truly a gift for everyone. It feels endless, with multiple rooms and shelves that just keep going. The vibe is cozy, slightly nostalgic, and packed with personality. Think local Maine authors, staff picks, cute gifts, puzzles, and little trinkets you didn't plan on buying but absolutely will. There's also a discount and bargain section with a really solid variety of books, which is a great find if you're looking to browse without spending too much. Postcards were also super affordable! The service was decent, nothing unusual, but still smooth and easy while browsing and checking out. I'd absolutely come back every time I'm in Bar Harbor. Quick note: there is no bathroom on site, so plan ahead before visiting!

Sometimes when you visit a coastal Maine town and shop around - the stores all blend together -…read morewith shelves filled with maple syrup, balsam stuffed sachets, blueberry dishes - you get the point. Well - this store sets itself apart in two ways. First - the items you find here - they are unique. Like a cribbage board that keeps track of wins/losses AND highest scoring hands! Or beer cozies made of wood with carved silhouettes of familiar Maine scenes! Or a piece of driftwood that has been altered to be an iPhone charging stand! The second way - and this is the part I kind of want to keep secret - but here I go - sharing!! There is a tiny 8 seat bar in the back corner of this store!! And - ALL of the spirits (wine, beer and liquor) are all Maine made!! There's even a menu section focusing on just cocktails with Allen's Coffee Brandy! Top that off with the fact the store/bar are owned by a wife/husband team! And that the bartender (husband) is verified engaging and if you have enough customers at the bar - he'll play the funnest musical guessing game!!

My husband and I actually delayed our departure from Bar Harbor a bit so I could pop in The Maine Store when they opened at 10am. The store smells super good like fresh pine and it has a wide variety of gifts, trinkets, ornaments, jewelry and such. I wish I could have wandered longer but I found a nice ornament and regrettably had to be on my way.

Title: Awkward, Underwhelming--and Surprisingly Memorable…read more We signed up for Sharon's "Maine Appetizers" cooking class at Ambrosia in Bar Harbor expecting a fun, local, and authentic experience. Unfortunately, it was anything but. The menu included a nice variety of roast beef roll-ups with bacon, deviled eggs topped with cocktail shrimp, chickpea dip, caprese skewers which literally were tomato, cheese and a basil leaf, and a lobster salad made with just two ingredients--lobster and mayo--served on bread. Not exactly the showcase of Maine's culinary richness we were hoping for. The class ended earlier than expected--lasting only 1.5 hours instead of the advertised 2. Portion sizes were quite small, and there was no inquiry about food allergies, which felt like a missed opportunity for inclusivity. Sharon came across as genuine and quirky, which added a bit of charm to the experience. However, instruction was minimal, and when she did offer guidance, she publicly critiqued my son's cucumber slicing in a way that felt unnecessarily harsh and uncomfortable. For someone hosting tourists in one of Maine's most visited destinations, Sharon might want to reconsider her approach--or her line of work. That said, the experience gave us plenty to talk about afterward, and for better or worse, it's one we won't forget. Sometimes the most unexpected moments make the best stories.

We both left the class feeling very comfortable that we could easily make these two dishes at home. It was well-organized, and the chef, Sharon, (a trained Cordon Blue chef) was engaging and informative. The class was held in an historic old Bar Harbor building, close to the water which added even more ambiance. We agreed that we would definitely take another (the Maine blueberry crumble sounds amazing!) when we are next in Bar Harbor. Highly recommend!
