There is art down there and other things for sale, but you will smell it the second you get down there. It smells like....an old basement haha Staff is vert friendly and they want to help. This is such a fun and interesting store. Everything is made out of wood and the space is peaceful and cozy as a result. Imagine kids toys, bird houses, small decorative art, candleholders, and more. There's a rustic and Scandinavian feel about the space. It's a great place to pick up toys or gifts if you want something that's thoughtfully created. The owner protects woodlands by using wood that would otherwise be wasted. We loved our quick little visit to the shop. They also have a large rocking horse that is fun for kids to experience. If I had more room in my luggage, I would've taken home one of those adorable little bird houses. read more

We had the *best* experience at In the Woods. The staff were so kind to our 7 year old son when we visited last summer. They gave him a paper toy because he'd worked so hard to keep his hands to himself in the store. And later, I ordered an item online that was impacted by lengthy shipping delays from the manufacturer. In the Woods connected with me personally with updates, and called me directly when the item finally came in, and shipped it promptly. It was very well packaged and arrived in perfect condition. We would absolutely recommend this shop and would love to visit again when we're next in Bar Harbor. read more

This store is beautiful just to look at, even if wood art isn't usually your thing. There are so many cool "bits and bobs", and bird houses galore. Just be careful walking around them - they can catch shirts, they do make a loud noise if they fall, but at least was strong enough to withstand it! read more

Really cool store for crafted wooden items. The store itself is 3 floors and beautiful. They have a variety of products including wooden kitchen items, furniture, decoration, etc. the wooden bowls and utensils were nice and were priced competitively for similar handcrafted cutting boards and bowls. It was cool because they had vintage/antique wooden items for sale as well. Really cool selection of decoys and wooden bird sculptures. Would definitely stop in here as they had a wide variety of items that would fit any budget when looking for a gift or souvenir. read more

Very cool shop, among the small handful of places in Bar Harbor to get a unique, authentic, hand-crafted gift or souvenir (see also Scrimshaw Workshop). They purvey a wide variety of wooden items such as cooking utensils, serving ware, cutting boards, children's toys, Christmas tree ornaments, decorative sculptures and figurines, bird houses, oversized chess sets...and much more. There are bins of knobs and spools and dowels and other craft-project needs; they even have barrels full of odd cedar scraps. It's a delightful wooden wonderland. There is a giant hobby horse (I assume not for sale) with a sign encouraging anyone and everyone to take a ride. In the back, there is a seemingly random collection of foreign antiques and craft items (see photos) such as Chinese washing boards, Afghan lassi glasses, and Indian print blocks. Neat stuff. All of this, every single thing that I saw, was priced reasonably or even downright cheaply. Plus, the upstairs loft hosts the Penobscot River Eco-Center, which presents information on numerous ecological aspects of the Penobscot watershed. Get some low-key education while you're here. And, as a bonus, the shop smells amazing. Don't miss it in your ambles up and down Main Street. read more

I have gone to this store a handful of times over the years and have always appreciated the collection of items they have, but never got a good impression from its employees. Each time I've walked in I feel as though they really don't want you in there and your treated like a nuisance. I confirmed this the last time I went in, where for a moment I thought things changed and it was a more friendly environment, but 10 minutes later was met with a young employee screaming at my family and I from down a staircase across the entire store in a very unprofessional manner. There are no signs that state this, but you are not allowed to touch anything, and apparently this includes if you have intentions of buying the items that you're holding/picking up as well. We were met with a lot of surprise and thought the employee could have been talking to someone else for a moment due to how angry his tone was, and we decided to put everything down that we were about to buy and just leave. It was really off putting, and it made the environment uncomfortable for other shoppers in the store as well. They don't hire friendly staff here, and it appears that they not only don't want you to buy things, they don't want you in the store at all. read more

Very nice collection. There are so many things which I never imagined can be made in wood. Some of the wall decors looks like laser cut because of their precision, but they are not. The wood artist has done that without laser machines. Don't forget to checkout the upstairs and downstairs collection. The huge Rocking horse is my favorite after puffins. This place was really cool! Shopping in Bar Harbor is just something you gotta experience. I thought it would be like the kitschy shops in New Orleans (not knocking N.O., just...if you've been there you know what I mean...) This ship was full of extremely unique woodworking. Went in for the first time today. What a gem! The gentleman running the shop super kind and nice to talk to. It's the perfect place to find a souvenir that has real aesthetic qualities. This is such an adorable shop! Just stepping into it makes me happy like a child again: oh these wooden ducks, big and small, brought back so many childhood memories. The cedar boxes are also a great buy -- their fragrance will last decades, and they are perfect for keeping jewel, and other small memorabilia. THIS STORE IS NOT FOR CHILDREN! This is not a toy store! PARENTS please think twice before allowing your children in this store. We purchased several wooden puzzles here 3 years ago for our at that time 2-year old son. The puzzles are beautiful and very high quality. We were excited to return today to purchase other special wooden toys for our now 5 year old and 2 year old. We also (similar to Eric's story) were asked to leave. What was concerning to us was that the young man behind the counter asked our 5 year old to leave. Even though my husband and I were standing right next to our son, he didn't address us, he addressed our 5 year old son. Yes, our son was playing with the puzzles. We were going to buy more. Again, they are great puzzles. The young man behind the counter said to our 5 year old "I think it is time that you leave. Just leave now, I will clean the mess up." There was 1 puzzle on the floor. These puzzles are 4-5 pieces max. Although we have never been asked to leave a store before. I would have appreciated a warning e.g. "Excuse Mrs. or Mr. we prefer that kids don't touch anything." Under most circumstances I believe that it is better to address the parents not the kids. Maybe some signage that reads "please don't touch the puzzles" could have better prepared us for the expectations of the store. I like the store, the merchandise is beautiful, there is a giant rocking horse there too. Go see all of the beautiful stuff, just don't bring the kids. read more

Adorable little shop in Bar Harbor. They have really nice baskets, all sorts of cute wood knickknacks (and a bit of other materials as well), and the most gorgeous cheese/cutting boards with natural bark edges. The prices range from decent to very good in my opinion. Definitely worth a stop if you're walking up and down Main Street. In the Woods... That is perhaps where the owner should stay. The owner was by far the rudest, most hateful person I have ever dealt with at any shop during our 2 year trip across the US. We've been touring national parks and enjoy supporting local artists who celebrate nature. We were very excited to find In The Woods shop in downtown Bar Harbor. At first. The storefront and displays inside were beautiful. My wife and I, along with a great friend visiting us on the road from Florida, went into the store fully expecting to buy numerous gifts for friends and family. At a glance, it appeared to be bursting at the seams with the kind of gifts we enjoy giving. Plus we love to support local artists. While my wife and friend walked ahead to explore the back of the store, my attention was caught by some wooden feathers displayed near the front. Feathers are a special symbol for dear friend of mine who has battled some health issues. I was hoping to buy one of the feathers displayed. However, next to the feathers was a sign that asked customers not to touch the displayed feathers. I understand that. I can see how someone could break them. Since there were 4 different birds represented and 3 different sizes of feather, I looked them over and chose the small Nighthawk for my friend. However, before I purchased, I wanted to actually hold the feather, look it over and feel its energy. I asked the gentleman behind the counter if I could hold the small Nighthawk feather. His rudely dismissive response "what for?" "Well...so I can see it up close before I buy it" He became annoyed and rolled his eyes, huffed and puffed and pulled some feather out of a shelf or cabinet behind him. He handed it over with a very angry/put out look on his face. At this point, I had already decided I would not be spending a penny in this store and I would be advising my companions to avoid doing so. But...I looked the feather over. He stood there glaring at me while I looked at it. I handed it back and said "thanks, but I will not be spending any money in this shop" and I walked quickly to the back and told my wife and friend what had happened. They both set the items they had selected for purchase back in their spots and we walked out. My wife made eye contact with the owner on our way out and he was glaring..."glaring with venom"...as we left. What a pathetically unhappy soul. We mentioned something to the owner of a store a few doors down. They said we were not the first, second, third...etc to complain about him. This is when we learned he was the owner. He has been nasty and rude to many people. Anyway, the products are beautiful. The spirit of the owner is dark, brooding and ugly. If you only care about the product and not the hands that made it, you might be happy buying from that shop. I won't. read more

I'm a frequent traveler and have become quite selective on travel purchases. While in Bar Harbor, we discovered In the Woods. Lovely handcrafted wood items that are affordable, and a marvelous piece of art to take home. In particular, the lifelike painted carvings of woodland birds caught our attention. The artist was so helpful. He explained his work in detail. My daughter selected a loon, and I was in search of a pileated woodpecker which was out of stock, but he easily coordinated shipping one to me when it was completed. If you are in Bar Harbor, stop in. I'm confident you too will leave with a treasure. read more

Wow, shopper beware! The man that works in this shop is either extremely unstable or very tired of being in this business. My wife, baby, and I all stopped by today for the first time and were so amazed at the items in their store. The wood is beautiful and the prices are very reasonable. Unfortunately, after asking the male employee about the price of an item his facial expression could only be described as extremely annoyed. By the time my wife returned to the counter with a different item I had decided not to continue with our transaction due to his continued unfriendliness. This made him even more angry. I said that he seemed very unhappy about something and after he asked why and I shared that he his facial expressions had been very surprising, his reaction was "Do you want to see a facial expression?" We immediately left the store as he chased after us all the way to the door... that's right... me, my wife, and my baby were chased out of the store by the angry male employee after mentioning that the customer service experience hadn't been good... Great shop amongst touristy stores in downtown bar Harbor! So many awesome wooden animals to buy and collect. Very reasonable prices! Last year we got a cutting board shaped like a whale and it's one of our favorite things in our kitchen! I also bought a few of the wooden whales to set on my window sill at home and they look so cute! I bought another one to add to my collection this year! In a world full of chains this store is a gem. Every item is unique, carved by craftsmen in Maine, with artistry and attention to detail. There are the most amazing wooden bowls (carved from giant blocks of wood); unique cutting boards (including bark), wooden toys; games (including a giant chess set fit for an episode of Harry Potter) and a variety of all sorts of other interesting wooden things. The most popular spot in the store is a giant rocking horse (made with the most amazing detail) that everybody (kids and adults) just has to try out and get a picture. The staff that I met were friendly, attentive and incredibly knowledgable. The store is not just a place to shop but a unique experience to be had if you visit Bar Harbor. I could clearly hear him saying how "customers complaining about prices should try to make these things themselves. They should only compliment his work if not shut the f*ck up and get out." My wife and I wandered into this shop while we were on vacation, and we really loved a lot of their products. It's all handmade and really well done. We left with some salad spoons, a salad bowl, and a really beautiful cutting board. The guy who helped us - who is one of the craftsmen, was very nice, and explained a lot about the different woods that they use. They also have a really great business plan, where they use a hefty portion of the proceeds from the business to buy land in Maine for conservation, and then use the dead wood already in the area to make their products, so you're also supporting a good cause. It is a little on the pricey end, but having used the salad bowl and cutting board for a few weeks now, we are very happy with them, and consider it worth the money. read more
