This store is beautiful just to look at, even if wood art isn't usually your thing. There are so many cool "bits and bobs", and bird houses galore. Just be careful walking around them - they can catch shirts, they do make a loud noise if they fall, but at least was strong enough to withstand it!

If it can be made out of wood, this store has it. Worth a stroll though just to see the $5000 canoe. Also sells some woolen goods.

Very cool shop, among the small handful of places in Bar Harbor to get a unique, authentic, hand-crafted gift or souvenir (see also Scrimshaw Workshop). They purvey a wide variety of wooden items such as cooking utensils, serving ware, cutting boards, children's toys, Christmas tree ornaments, decorative sculptures and figurines, bird houses, oversized chess sets...and much more. There are bins of knobs and spools and dowels and other craft-project needs; they even have barrels full of odd cedar scraps. It's a delightful wooden wonderland. There is a giant hobby horse (I assume not for sale) with a sign encouraging anyone and everyone to take a ride. In the back, there is a seemingly random collection of foreign antiques and craft items (see photos) such as Chinese washing boards, Afghan lassi glasses, and Indian print blocks. Neat stuff. All of this, every single thing that I saw, was priced reasonably or even downright cheaply. Plus, the upstairs loft hosts the Penobscot River Eco-Center, which presents information on numerous ecological aspects of the Penobscot watershed. Get some low-key education while you're here. And, as a bonus, the shop smells amazing. Don't miss it in your ambles up and down Main Street.

This place was really cool! Shopping in Bar Harbor is just something you gotta experience. I thought it would be like the kitschy shops in New Orleans (not knocking N.O., just...if you've been there you know what I mean...) This ship was full of extremely unique woodworking. We even went back another day to look some more! There's a giant rocking horse you can actually ride. If you have kids or if you're a kid at heart, go check out this little gem!

Beautiful hand made wooden art in all its glory.

My favorite shop in the entire town. Truly one of a kind items. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The best place to get a piece of Maine.

Beautiful handmade shop with something for everyone. The sculpted birds are what drew us into the shop. We wanted to take home everything from kitchen ware to candle holders. A must visit for vacationers. We went back a day later and took home a beautiful barred owl piece. One of a kind keepsake.

Looking for the right item !

In The Woods is definitely the place to go if you are looking for that special wood crafted item in Maine. You can shop for smaller items such as handmade wooden kitchen utensils or larger items like a 250 year old bench. Today I went in for a unique wine rack and was not disappointed as I found just the right one at the right price. They also have an upstairs section that includes a 50% off discounted table if you are looking for a bargain. I more than likely would have given a rating of a 5 if the store included raw edge and carved items, specifically items of animals.

Due to the nature of how long this particular location has been opened some of the areas can feel very crowded depending on how many people are nearby but understandable with how long they've been open. Like other Sherman locations they have more than just books including puzzles, stuffed animals, Knick-knacks/trinkets, and more. My wife is an avid reader and loves checking out every and any bookstore. I appreciate locating them for her so she can do so! While not as much of an avid reader I do appreciate what appears to be a resurgence of physical books and indie book stores. The staff were extremely friendly and prices were reasonable/on par with other locations. This Sherman's has stood the test of time and has provided locals and tourists a spot for the newest and classic favorites for many generations. Worth your time to check it out even if you don't buy anything to make the claim you visited the oldest bookstore in Maine!

Walking into Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shop felt like stepping into a classic coastal bookstore you'd see in a movie. It's Maine's oldest bookstore and one of the ten oldest in the U.S., which makes the whole experience feel even more special. Right on Main Street, it's super easy to find while strolling through Bar Harbor, but heads up, parking is mostly street parking and can get tight during peak tourist hours. Inside, there's truly a gift for everyone. It feels endless, with multiple rooms and shelves that just keep going. The vibe is cozy, slightly nostalgic, and packed with personality. Think local Maine authors, staff picks, cute gifts, puzzles, and little trinkets you didn't plan on buying but absolutely will. There's also a discount and bargain section with a really solid variety of books, which is a great find if you're looking to browse without spending too much. Postcards were also super affordable! The service was decent, nothing unusual, but still smooth and easy while browsing and checking out. I'd absolutely come back every time I'm in Bar Harbor. Quick note: there is no bathroom on site, so plan ahead before visiting!

Well - this store sets itself apart in two ways. First - the items you find here - they are unique. Like a cribbage board that keeps track of wins/losses AND highest scoring hands! Or beer cozies made of wood with carved silhouettes of familiar Maine scenes! Or a piece of driftwood that has been altered to be an iPhone charging stand! The second way - and this is the part I kind of want to keep secret - but here I go - sharing!! There is a tiny 8 seat bar in the back corner of this store!! And - ALL of the spirits (wine, beer and liquor) are all Maine made!! There's even a menu section focusing on just cocktails with Allen's Coffee Brandy! Top that off with the fact the store/bar are owned by a wife/husband team! My husband and I actually delayed our departure from Bar Harbor a bit so I could pop in The Maine Store when they opened at 10am. The store smells super good like fresh pine and it has a wide variety of gifts, trinkets, ornaments, jewelry and such. I wish I could have wandered longer but I found a nice ornament and regrettably had to be on my way.

Title: Awkward, Underwhelming--and Surprisingly Memorable…read more We signed up for Sharon's "Maine Appetizers" cooking class at Ambrosia in Bar Harbor expecting a fun, local, and authentic experience. Unfortunately, it was anything but. The menu included a nice variety of roast beef roll-ups with bacon, deviled eggs topped with cocktail shrimp, chickpea dip, caprese skewers which literally were tomato, cheese and a basil leaf, and a lobster salad made with just two ingredients--lobster and mayo--served on bread. Not exactly the showcase of Maine's culinary richness we were hoping for. The class ended earlier than expected--lasting only 1.5 hours instead of the advertised 2. Portion sizes were quite small, and there was no inquiry about food allergies, which felt like a missed opportunity for inclusivity. Sharon came across as genuine and quirky, which added a bit of charm to the experience. However, instruction was minimal, and when she did offer guidance, she publicly critiqued my son's cucumber slicing in a way that felt unnecessarily harsh and uncomfortable. For someone hosting tourists in one of Maine's most visited destinations, Sharon might want to reconsider her approach--or her line of work. That said, the experience gave us plenty to talk about afterward, and for better or worse, it's one we won't forget. Sometimes the most unexpected moments make the best stories.

We both left the class feeling very comfortable that we could easily make these two dishes at home. It was well-organized, and the chef, Sharon, (a trained Cordon Blue chef) was engaging and informative. The class was held in an historic old Bar Harbor building, close to the water which added even more ambiance. We agreed that we would definitely take another (the Maine blueberry crumble sounds amazing!) when we are next in Bar Harbor. Highly recommend!
