Last night I discovered my new, favorite beer garden. You know it's a hidden gem when you have to…read moreuse your GPS to guide you through quiet neighborhood streets to find it. Not only is it tucked away from the noise of the busy street, but it's set in a lush Japanese garden with stone pogodas and a red, wooden bridge over a small pond of water. Add beer, fingerpainting and Yelpers to the mix, and you've got an ideal retreat to wind down after a hectic day. We sat on picnic benches and painted to our heart's content. Heidi, the owner of the mobile Fingerpainting company instructed us on how to make our masterpieces. Spritz your paper with water and spread it across the page. Add acrylic paints to your page by spraying, squirting, plopping, pressing and spreading from the small, bright containers provided. Some chose to spin their paper around to let the colors drip and form their own patterns. Others rolled up their sleeves and litterally got their hands dirty. Heidi gave us aprons and gloves so we wouldn't ruin our clothes. We could set our works of art onto a tablecloth on the ground to dry and then plop them onto a cardboad platform in order to transport them home without messing up our vehicles. Yelp Community Ambassador Jennifer J. did a fine job of organizing this creative endeavor. Thanks for the sausage and cheese appetizer and the free drink ticket. Oh, and the Yelp sunglasses were a hit too, especially since the sun didn't set until 8:30 PM. What a fantastic way to enjoy a summer evening in the Pacific Northwest. I didn't want to leave, so I stayed and ordered Pineapple Cider and a Mason Jar cheesecake from the outside bar (a converted CONEX container). I would love to come back with friends for a game night. There was a mini putt putt golf course and cornhole outside. The converted house provides shelter from the elements and would make a nice retreat during the winter months. Indoors, you'll find a foosball table, darts and several dozen board games. There's a pokestop here too. Not like you need another "lure" to convince you to come. Did I mention that this is my new favorite hideaway? Check it out, I'm certain it will make your list too.

However, I pride myself on the fact that my opinions are not cast in stone, and I ended up surprised at how much fun I had! Heidi, the owner of Fingerpainting for Grownups, was incredibly gracious and put me at ease immediately when she said it's impossible to mess up. I tried my best to prove her wrong, but ended up with a pair of unique creations that I was proud to bring home. Even if you're like me, and a bit skeptical of your artistic abilities, I would urge you to swing out and try a fingerpainting event with your friends. And for our event, the beautiful outdoor gardens at Hops 'n Headz were the perfect location for all the fun.

Registration is free, but act fast once it opens since there are only 16 spots available! For our workshop, we painted a nightscape, starting off with a gradient sky, followed by mountains, the moon, and additions of our choice. Art From The Heart provided step-by-step instructions, in addition to a canvas, paint, easel, brushes, and palettes. Note that smocks are not provided, so dress accordingly as it could get messy. Our instructors were very encouraging and helpful, coming around to provide advice, paper towels, and more paint as needed. With a few simple brush strokes, the owner, Maria, even transformed my trees to make them look more realistic! Our instructors also kindly handled cleanup, though the nearby Circle K was available for anyone to wash their hands. All in all, it made for a very fun and relaxing night! I appreciated that the workshop was in the shade (especially with this heatwave!) with every pair having their own table. I also love that this event provides everyone, beginner or not, to explore their creativity while being outdoors.

There's a 1 out of 4 chance if you're reading this you have lied to an employer about being comfortable using Microsoft Office. However, Maria's instructions allowed me to find my stroke naturally. Her words calmed every nervy movement allowing me to disconnect from reality completely as her voice softly faded. Entering a wormhole of serenity while my subconscious transcended through the brush. After a night of laughs and learning. I face what is now a colourful canvas. A work of art, that came from my heart. Reflection, pride and a new painting for my grandma to hang in her living room.

It's nice that everyone was able to do their own booking and we could still get spots sitting next to each other. Some of us were lucky enough to find a 5$ off discount code as well. The class started and ended on time. Everything was set up when we arrived and aprons were provided. It did fill up though so perhaps it is important to register asap. There were two instructors who helped with everything we needed and demonstrated the painting in the front of the room. I liked that the class I took had the pretraced picture on the palette when I arrived. I had previously taken a wine and paint class with another company and it definitely does not look as good due to this. It was also nice that we had a variety of colors to choose from for our background so each picture looked individual. I am surprisingly happy with how mine turned out. A member of our group arrived very late and was still able to catch up and ended up with a great finished product. I think everyone was slightly disappointed that the class did not include any beer from the brewery, but we were able purchase and drink while we painted. One of the instructors ended up doing some waitressing for us as well, which was incredibly nice and allowed us to keep on painting with little distraction. They also did a few raffles for some small prizes which was a nice touch.

They are encouraging and make it a fun event. They are engaged with every single person, and don't try to rush you. I've done a few events with them at Emory's on Silver Lake, and everyone just has a great time. For a non-artist, I'm pretty impressed with my results. It's neat they travel to different locations, so you can find something near you on a specific day and it's easy to sign up! And I LOVE that they do more than just canvas prints, so you can get more creative and not have all these prints and nowhere to put them! The wine bottle lamps are AWESOME.

First, the logistics: I arrived at 5:30 PM, thirty minutes before the 6:00 start. Before sitting down, I asked a staff member whether seating was assigned. They confirmed our table was fine for a party of two, noting it was a table for four and that larger tables were reserved for bigger groups. My friend arrived at 5:45. We settled in, organized our materials, and got started. At 6:01, a group of four (middle-aged white women) arrived late. There were no remaining four-top tables available. Staff had options -- they could have set up stations at the empty large table nearby, or split the group across two available seats at separate tables. Instead, they asked us to move. We were the ones who arrived early. We were the ones who had confirmed our seating. We moved anyway. We were the only two people of color in the room -- the only two non-white guests in a space full of white attendees. We were asked to move twice that evening: once for seating, and once during a demo when I was asked to move to the back -- I had never used a soldering iron before and from my new position couldn't see a single thing that was being demoed. Both times, we were told to make room for others. I can't say with certainty how much race played into these decisions. What I can say is how it felt -- and it felt like we were the easiest people in the room to ask. Beyond the seating situation, the instruction quality was genuinely lacking for a $135 class. There were only two brief demos for the entire group, no table-by-table check-ins, and no meaningful support for first-time solderers. I never successfully attached the legs to my jellyfish. I left my project unfinished on the table and walked out. If you're a person of color considering this class, I'd encourage you to factor in my experience. Had I read a review like this beforehand, I would not have booked.
