    Chicken Shawarma Plate
    Katie E.

So incredibly delicious every time. Fresh flavorful I highly recommend trying their food in particular the chicken Shawarma plate. It's consistently wonderful.

Both the makanek amd Sujouk having to be reheated

So Ishtar had my food ready in 15 minutes! That was great but the speed sacrificed the quality of the food. I live two blocks away and got the food as they took it off the heat. When I got home it was cool and I had to heat it up. Chicken kebab was dry and honestly the beef and lamb dishes makanek and sukout were tasty. I have had good experiences at Ishtar but this one was not great. I was severely disappointed with what I got today :( I believe in Ishtar and I will be back and expect it to be better. I will improve my review when that happens

tiny hole in the wall place with excellent food and big portions. It's more of a to-go spot as there isn't much room inside. Chicken shawarma plate is amazing and my friend loved her gyro too. I've been back several times

Love this place, hands down the best gyro you'll have in Portland. A little hole in the wall joint with BIG flavor! Best in the city. 10/10

The best meal we've had in ages. The love that must have been put into this food is notable. Don't pass up the Lamb, Kafka and falafels. The salad is perfection with pickles, tomatoes and a dressing that balances the plate. You won't regret a choice.

The atmosphere was lively and I loved the industrial, modern decor. I went on a busy Friday night and was sat right at my reservation time. Our server was personable and friendly. They had a small mocktail selection with creative options. I went with the "worth a chai", which was spicy, sweet, and tangy. The tasting menu was $75 each for two people and we got a total of 9 dishes and left full and with leftovers. Not one dish wasn't delicious and I enjoyed how each dish had an unexpected flavor or textural element to keep things interesting. All the ingredients felt fresh and the dishes were bright in color and taste. Despite the larger quantity of food, the meal overall felt well- balanced, healthy, and not too heavy or decadent. I keep thinking about the hamachi crudo that came with this amazing smoky eggplant that complemented the vinaigrette on the fish perfectly. The radicchio salad was addictingly good with the fruity burst of sweetness from the cherries. The hummus is insanely rich and pairs well with the thick, fluffy pita. I could keep going on about each dish, but these were my absolute standouts. I especially appreciated the timing of the dishes. New dishes came out right as we were finishing the last. I will be coming back here to try more of the menu.

We tried their falafels, eggplant babaganush, lamb hummus; chicken kebabs; seasonal melon salad, salmon and chocolate pistachio icecream. the melon salad was refreshing. The pita's are very tasty. The chocolate pistachio seemed like chocolate icecream with pistachios which was okay, they could give a inhouse speciality there. Kebabs were soft, the salmon along with the plating and the sauce and veggies was good. The drinks were great too! The old aged whiskey was perfect. Ambiance is cozy, not too big.. great for groups or dates.

We didn't have a reservation, but there's was room at the bar alongside the kitchen. That's always the best place to sit because it's like getting a show with dinner. Speaking of dinner, it was excellent. We started with a roasted eggplant dip served with a round, fluffy pita bread. So yummy. Next came falafel with tahina and green S'hug sauce, which gives it a spicy kick. The six falafel balls were light and airy, not dense and dry like lots of falafel we've had in the past. Finally, we ended with chicken shawarma, a wonderful confit chicken dish, nicely seasoned, sitting atop large pita pillow. We just folded it up and went from there. The service was fast, friendly and efficient. They suggest ordering two dishes per person, but you don't need to. Three dishes is plenty (even two) depending on what you get. We washed it down with a pilsner beer and homemade blackberry soda. The portions are generous. We'll definitely go back and sample several other dishes.

My son treated me to flavors I've never experienced before. I didn't take pictures but it looks like there are plenty here already. We ate: Lamb Kabobs-tender meat delicious flavor. Something wrapped in Grape Leaves served with a dipping sauce-so mouth watering pleasant to every taste bud I wanted more, more, more! They serve a large, tortilla style, bread, the name escapes me, which I was able to use a variety of dips on, one a garlic mixture for dipping, I must have more! Each dip had its own flavor, cannot tell you what they were but lemon was used here and there, as well as other exotic spices. Every single thing I ate there opened with one completely satisfying flavor, and often changed to a secondary flavor that was equal too, or better than the first. Yum. The waitress was very informative and the service was efficient. The restaurant is decorated in a Middle Eastern style and it was lovely. I had their coffee. Now that was eye opening. The service they used was fancy and I truly developed an appreciation for that style-less is more, and perfect for the drive ahead. Oh! The Baklava- yes please. We had that later in the evening as there was no way to eat more at the end of the meal. Over all, I will say this: It is a restaurant I will go back too. My son treated me to a delicious meal with a man I love dearly.

The hostess and server who greeted us were very friendly and welcoming. We liked the vibe - upscale but still causal enough for us to pop in, views of the kitchen action, moody and dark decor. Our server was prompt and friendly. I enjoyed my NA Hugo spritz - they had a good selection of zero proof/NA options, so we really appreciated that. The staff kept our water filled, which is always a plus. The biggest issue we had was the pacing of the meal. Typically when we order small plates and order everything at once, we have had our dishes paced where we can enjoy 1-2 things and then move on to the next round as it arrives. In this case, we had one plate to eat from, and every dish came out one after another, so on our 2-top table, we barely had room to function. By the time we had enough of our salad and focaccia so we could stack the serving dishes to make space, our pasta dish was cold. We had ordered the Dolly Focaccia (stuffed with whole confit garlic cloves (they slid out when you picked up a piece so it was a little messy), the Dolly Caesar, the Tricolor Cauliflower, and the Mafaldine with the spicy pork ragu. The Caesar was very heavily dressed, so that made for a soggy salad. The focaccia seemed to be a touch underbaked - the inside was a little gummy. The mafaldine was good - just hard to maneuver for serving with the packed table since it was all one giant noodle, more or less. I would have loved a fresh plate at some point with all of the saucy items. The cauliflower was our favorite dish. We might have stayed for dessert, but the finagling of all of our dishes made us feel kind of rushed and feeling like we should call it. All that said, we were able to get a table without a reservation, the staff were all very friendly, and we were in and out in about an hour, so it met our needs. I am hoping we just had an off-night experience, but this wasn't our favorite meal while visiting Portland. 3.5 stars
