Was true to his name, Blunt, he had a way of doing things that was direct and was not flexible. Sadly he recently passed. Andy took over and is a great guy and very patient. I have no woodworking experience and I love that the classes are team oriented where you work together cutting and preparing the wood as well as in assembly. If you're interested in learning how to build things with wood, you could not find a better place than Isgood. I took the cabinet making course where we learned how to operate all manners of saws and tools. John is a great teacher and his approach is very learn by doing-- he'll show you once then watch you as you try. It's a great method and when I finished the course I was able to make my own custom bookcase largely by myself to fit into a strange alcove in my house (with some helpful input from John). And it actually looks like a professional built in! John is very generous with his time and is a great mentor. He's easy to talk to and patient with beginners. I'm now a subscriber, which has saved me a ton of money since I don't have to buy and own my own set of tools. If you even have a passing interest in learning woodworking this is the place to do it! read more

I can't say enough good things about my experience here. I needed access to a 20" planer. I have access to other woodshops, but none with a wide enough planer. IsGood made is SOOOOO easy to come in and do the work I needed to get done. Lynn and John were both super friendly, and excited about my project. They were also very fair, charging only for the time I used (a half hour, rather than bumping up to the whole hour). The shop is set up beautifully, and the equipment like a dream. I know of no other place that offers the flexibility and quality of shop that IsGood does. This is *the* place to come whether you have no tools to your name or just need to use one higher-end piece for that little something you can't finish in your own shop. I was also excited to hear about their classes and their "WeBuild" program. I will be back to take advantage of those! read more

Whether you are an expert cabinet maker, a rough-out carpenter, or a complete novice there is something for you at IsGood. This is a professional wood working shop that does everything from top-of-the-line custom furniture and cabinetry to helping you work on a project of your own and teaching you how to. The people there are great, and they are more than willing to work with you to make sure that you have a great experience. You can rent a bench by the month, just get some hours in the co-op, or just do a single project. I worked out of this shop while living in Seattle and working on the TV show Home Made Simple for TLC. Everyone in the shop was friendly, and even the other tenants in the building were really great. Three classes in and three to go and I would highly recommend IsGood to anybody who has woodworking ambitions bun neither the tools or skill (yet). John, the instructor is gracious and very forgiving, and it has been beneficial to my learning process. In my group of six, it is safe to say mistakes have been made, and almost encouraged since they are opportunities to correct and learn. More importantly, the structure of the class, with reasonable levels of autonomy, allows us to make our own mistakes, to which we are realigned. It is worth saying that the classes are really (to me) preparation for my own ambitions to build my own cabinets and furniture, a task that is well under way with the mentored shop time. With little more than basic safety training, some sound theory, and a skilled partner mentoring me, my new LP cabinet is well underway and should be done by the holidays! To reference another review that claims "ticking time bomb," I can only say that such a statement could only be maid in jest or as some sort of retribution for a frustrating experience, and perhaps horsing around on the table saw.... If you have doubts, call first and see that this shop is run by expert craftsmen who yet do not take themselves too seriously and encourage learning in a hands on way, not a lecture then scrutiny as others have claimed. read more

After speaking with someone from this group and sending an email with rough specifications (a drawing with some dimensions), I received no response. Called back over two weeks later and received an apology, after which I re-sent the email. I offered to pay up to $300 for them to build me a spice rack approximately 16" wide and 11" high...a fancy rectangle made of wood. A discussion with them led to the need to pay $60/hr for some "design" work and after speaking with one of the reps and arranging an in-person meeting, I received an email reply from another rep who told me that the design work alone might run more than 5 hours ($300+). WHAT A JOKE!!! Any firm that can't build a rectangular spice rack when given some rough specifications needs to re-examine their practice. read more

I recently rented shop time and requested mentorship with IsGood Woodworks on a small woodworking project. I successfully completed my project, learned a few new tricks, and felt proud of what I accomplished. It should be mentioned that John has a wealth of experience, and this was especially obvious when we course corrected after I made a few mistakes. However, there are numerous things IsGood Woodworks needs to improve if they truly care about their community and want to provide a quality service to Seattle. First and foremost, during my week at IsGood, the shop was horrendously overbooked. On weekends and weeknights alike, there were 4-5 people working on their projects in the small space. They all appeared to need John's attention, which was frustrating, since I had to actively compete for his mentorship. This meant that when I did have time with John, it felt rushed, led to miscommunication, and eventually mistakes. Ultimately, this resulted in having to rent more shop time and more mentor time with John, costing me more in the end. This problem could've been resolved by having stricter rules on booking mentorship time and focusing on one project at a time. My suggestion to IsGood Woodworks here is to only have one appointment at a time in the shop, and devote all your time to them during that period. If I had this level of attention, I would feel valued, respected, and probably would've spent less time on my project! Secondly, John's demeanor at times was less than welcoming. I did not feel encouraged or welcome to make mistakes. On multiple occasions, John cursed and sweared at me, making me feel unwelcome and inferior. Between each session, I tried to do as much homework as possible and inform myself about my mistakes before booking a new one with John. I did my best to communicate and try to get clarity on instructions, but was met with more harsh criticism instead of partnership. This, in my opinion, is not worth the $65/hour you pay for mentorship. Ultimately, I left feeling demeaned, disrespected, and down after each session. My suggestion to IsGood Woodworks here is to once again solely devote your time to one person at a time. I understand the logistics of rental might be complicated here, but putting strict bounds on times would leave the shop less busy, less stressful, and might help provide a better environment for both mentor and student alike. Third, and probably most frustrating, is the lack of clarity around billing. It was not clear to me that I was expected to keep track of both John's and my own hours on the project. It should also be noted that shop rentals and mentorship time are not exclusive; if you are building a project and you need mentorship, you'll be paying for both at the same time. This was a surprise to me at the end. My suggestion to IsGood Woodworks here is to clear up their language on their website, contracts, and other legal documents. I would also add examples, like building common projects, like a box, chair, or bookcases (for example: Jane wants to build a bookcase, we estimate with mentorship, she will need 5 hours to build it. 5 hours of shop time + 5 hours of mentorship = Final Cost). I think this would clear up the expectations, and lead to happier customers in the end. Ultimately, if you are a beginner, need some refreshing on basic woodworking skills, or are rusty and need mentorship, I would _not_ recommend IsGood Woodworks in its current state. There are a number of issues that need to be fixed before it can become an effective place for education. Conversely, if you are a professional, seasoned hobbyist, or just need some tools to rent for a quick project, IsGood Woodworks is one of the few places where you can rent large tools and a shop space to do big projects for a small period of time. My experience with IsGood has been awesome. In a few months, I've gone from no woodworking experience at all to making my own furniture. My girlfriend was so impressed that she wants me to build a new bed, nightstands, closet organizer, cabinets, vanity, etc. It's really fun. John has helped me get over the newbie mistakes and given me confidence to take on ever more challenging projects. The shop is a casual, laid-back co-op type environment, and the people here are really cool. John is a great teacher. He's also very patient. VERY patient. Trust me. LOL. I keep messing up my project, he keeps helping me. Also, the rental rates are the best in the area, and the classes are also the most affordable but are very high quality. I've taken classes at other places and IsGood tends to cut out the fluff but give you tons of useful info, and doesn't charge for supplies. As to the reviews that say they are rude, that is ridiculous. John is like that mellow hippy teacher you had in high school that gave you an A when you probably deserved a B. Always makes time to answer questions, no matter how stupid, does it patiently and in a very friendly way. If he hung up on someone, I'd assume that person was probably being a major d-bag. Seriously. If you made John angry, you just suck at life and I'm glad you're not a member of the shop making it miserable for the rest of us. read more

I've done a lot of DIY work. Now that I'm getting ready to retire, I wanted to really learn good carpentry skills to allow me to make furniture. "Is good" was just the place for me. The shop is well designed and complete with all the appropriate tools. I've taken two classes so far and am looking forward to the cabinet-making course. The teaching is professional, and oriented to group learning and participation. John Blunt, our instructor, is a very kind and patient soul. He insures our safe use of the tools and instructs us in their proper use as we learn techniques applied to real life projects. The shop also allows folks to rent time for very reasonable prices to continue wood-working if you desire. That's perfect for me, as I really can't afford to set up my own shop given the cost of space and power tools these days in Seattle. Before I built this island I could barely screw in a lightbulb. I now know the difference between a band saw, a table saw, a planer and a joiner.
