I went to is salon with the only request that I don't like red hair.. In the end I got red hair! The hair due job looks like it was done by a student! Very pricey salon. You are mostly paying for the Yaletown location. I paid $ 155 (w tax & tips) for a basic color & basic trim when I needed a proper haircut. Both service & result were nothing extraordinary or "above & beyond". My hair tends to be pretty thick and the hairdresser did not address this when I asked her to. She merely put a ton of products to make look thinner without actually making it thinner. Definitely not worth the money! read more

I walked in hoping to get my hair done spur of the moment with a stylist I had used a red deal with months ago. She wasn't working so April took me instead. I'm usually spur of the moment/last minute with making hair appt (to get the best of the best you normal have to book weeks in advance) but April was amazing! My hair colour is brilliant and the cut and style is so fresh! Her service is 5 star as well! I was poured wine and brought the most current magazine. April's shampoo was so relaxing too. The worst is cold water and hair pulling but not April! I've given 4 out of 5 stars only because it was a little expensive for me but worth every pretty penny! My worse hair salon experience ever. The stylist, Cindy, does not even know how to do an updo. She had her own idea of what I should do with my hair. I have a mid-length hair with big curls. I wanted an updo and she told me she didn't know what to expect and that she didn't have time to finish my hair. She left me to another stylist before finishing my hair to go to her other customer whom she knew. It was a few hours before my friend's wedding so I could not find another salon. I brought my daughter in during spring break as she heard good things about this salon. My daughter wanted her hair highlighted. She is quite fair skinned and a blonde already. Throughout the appt, I would receive texts from her saying that she didn't think the hairdresser listened to what she wanted and that she also felt nervous as she didn't want her hair to cause her to looked 'washed out'. After having her hair done and dried, it was such a horrible look for her fair skin and her hair was so badly overprocessed that her hair had a grey/green tinge to it. My daughter was mortified. It cost me an additional $200 (over the $350) to have another salon fix not only the colour (they had to tone it 3 times, each time taking over 20 min to work in the toner) but the fact that her hair had come out like straw. Will we ever return? not a chance. Would we recommend that stylist to anyone? Not a chance. Not sure if the stylist didn't really listen to my daughter as she is 15 but the stylist definitely did NOT take into consideration my daughter's skin tone. I love Is Salon and I love Erin Leigh! I'm not quite sure where to start the praise, the salon or my stylist? Erin Leigh is fantastic. I have been a loyal client of hers for about 4 years. She was the first stylist I tried when I moved here and I haven't strayed since. I have followed her from another salon to Is because she's that good. She is amazing with colour! I get compliments on my blonde all the time, even a month later when my roots are peeking through people still tell me how great my colour is! I have sent friends and coworkers to her too and they all come back to me telling me how great she was, how much they love their hair and how happy they are to have finally found a stylist they are happy with and will continue to go to. Erin also gives the best scalp massages, so relaxing! The salon it's self is beautiful too. The owner picked a great location and did an awesome job renovating it. The complimentary wine during my appointment is a nice touch too! After working all day a glass of wine and a scalp massage are the perfect thing to make me feel pampered and relaxed. By far, my best hair experience - she really does listen and has a great ability to marry product, styling, cut and colour to achieve what you are looking for. It`s very rare for me to write up a review but I signed up here just to let everyone know how fun of a Salon IS is and how much of the bomb Silvana is. First of all, the Salon has great atmosphere. The front desk staff are always chatty and helpful, offering beverages of sorts and are bery prompt with their level of service. Is it normal for a dude to love the smell of a salon too because this place is unreal. Just smells like chicks! As for the hair cutting and styling bit, Silvana is a true expert and really gets to know your hair to match it up with your style and personality. I should say, sometimes I`m all over the map, one day I want to grow my hair out, the other super short and faded. The thing is, Silvana just seems to intuitively know what to do with my mop if I don`t have a clear idea of what I want, or if I just want something new and fresh. And to that end i`ve never been dissatisfied with her work. At times, I`ve gone like two + months of not getting my hair cut and it just grows out great, something I`ve never had with any other stylists or barbers. I don`t suggest going that long without getting your hair cut though since Silvana has a great personality and always makes your day. That alone is well worth the visit! read more

I went for consultation with Allison, friend of mine gave me her card so I went and asked for highlights,retouch the roots. I told her I don't want red or orange hair in the end, she kept on going how much experience she have with colours, she told me the price and gave me 25% off if I pay by cash no tax! good deal right? WRONG! I came back the next day she offered me wine, tea or coffee I just asked for water which I never got, no big deal but then she goes I'm not going to retouch your roots as it would cost more WHAT! I don't care if I need to pay extra but it was her that gave me a deal! Whatever what can I do. Next step she gave me the foil and goes "ok put the foil wao so I had to do her work. Chunks of hair that started blonde by the root turned into brassy orange. I told her no orange no red yet I ended up with orange color. So I told her it's orange and she said " yes you have to come back in 2 weeks to fix it. Really are you KIDDING ME?! Why would I pay 200$ or more for the mistake that she made! In the end she recommend the keratine treatment. I would never ever go there! Even if I get free treatment. Never again! read more

I had my haircut with Allison a couple months back, I'm posting this because I STILL SHUDDER when I think of the experience. Like everyone else, I bought the Red Pocket deal. I told Allison that I wanted a layered look, a bit heavier on the top. During my entire haircut, she kept on asking me if I had Christmas parties coming up, if I had any special dates or whatever. When I said no she just kept on pushing, how about New Years parties? Oh I can do birthday hair, wedding hair too! Wedding??? Lady I'm 19! My hair was all over my face, she never once bothered to sweep all the cut hair off my face. I was CONSTANTLY spitting out my own hair, not a pleasant thing to do. What really put me off was that she kept on telling me that I need to brush my hair a certain way, "Don't fight your hair's natural groove! See? Your hair LIKES to be swept THIS way!" No. Just. No! I've been brushing my hair the same way all my life, my hair never fought with me thank you very much! After my haircut I literally had to go to the washroom and pick out all the little individual hair remains off of my face. Ugh, totally unprofessional. Now, 4 months later, my hair's grown out, and I realized that she didn't layer my hair properly. My hair is naturally straight, and she literally took the outside layer and chop it in half. So my head looks like it's got 2 haircuts at this moment, it's like a bob with a long tail. I would never go back to Allison again. read more

Being right in the heart of Yaletown, I was so surprised to have been met with such great service at unbeatable prices! Erin, the owner of the salon, is absolutely fantastic! She has no pretense and is as real as it gets. She listened to exactly what we wanted and then delivered. She took so much time and care with both of us. We love our hair and on top of it all, Erin gave us 50% our first visit! With so many salons feeling overpriced and unfriendly, we really felt like Erin is such a hidden gem. No one with common sense or diplomacy says to a paying Groupon customer that people who use coupons are 'sketchy' people! What were you thinking? My first experience here, stylist (Alison) was late, worst shampoo ever!, down on coupon users and didn't hesitate to tell me, a cut whereby I couldn't tell afterwards that it was cut... you give nothing, you get nothing. I went to this salon for the first time today. I bought a REDPOCKET DEAL for Women's Designer Cut, Wash, Scalp Massage, Blowout & Style using Moroccan Oil, Pureology and Kevin Murphy Products. Plus $25 off Hair Coloring Services with Goldwell Products at IS Salon When I attended the salon I was greeted by Allison Gauthier who reminded me that i would need to pay tax and pay extra because I had long hair. I let her know that the voucher i purchased had not stated an extra charge for longer hair, only tax. She argued with me and brought out another company's voucher (dealfind) to prove that the deal does stipulate that an extra charge was clearly explained. I agreed that the printed out deal did indicate an extra charge, but explained again the voucher i bought was different, to which she stated they are all the same. The hair wash and condition got on its way but the complication of the deal not explaining longer hair costing more came up over and over, making things very awkward and stressful. I would not have paid salon prices for this portion as it was less than standard. This particular stylist made me very uncomfortable. She asked if i only used vouchers when i got my hair cuts, aggressively push/poked my head around, and kept reminding me how unfair it was that the deal didn't explain an extra charge was needed, as she complained people with long hair only come into the salon every six months, which is not fair for the stylist. The hair cut itself was good enough, nothing upsetting and truthfully looked pretty good. Though it wasn't really what i wanted, the stylist just went at my hair with scissors and started snipping. I had brought both the voucher and a picture of what I had wanted to ask for on my phone but the stylist was not really interested in taking a look at either. I wanted more of a trim, i still feel i need a haircut. My hair had had a lot of split ends and needed a more thorough clean up than what i had received. Besides the whole uncomfortably 2 things above everything else made me not want to return to this salon. 1) I felt the confusion over the voucher was taken out of the quality of service i received, and 2) I was charged $9 tax on a $29 purchase, which i am quite certain not how tax is calculated on vouchers. read more

I actually would give Is. Salon zero stars or perhaps a half. I had a trim that was not very stylish and the bangs were way off. I came back for color and to have the bangs fixed. I told Jenny specifically what I wanted- brown hair and she gave me black, covering all my highlights, I immediately told her I was not happy and she did not offer to fix or tell me to come back. She told me to wash it. I called the next day and went back to get it fixed. She did not tell me that the 'cocktail' shampoo would make my hair dull and fried looking, worse than the color she put in. I told her again I was not happy and she got very flustered and almost left me at the chair with wet hair. She didn't even want to dry my hair! I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but she was rude, unprofessional and did not handle the situation well. It showed her lack of knowledge and experience. But the worst part was when I was leaving the front desk person wouldn't say bye to me! Not only was i pleasant with all the staff, although I told Jenny I did not like it, I also tipped her! I never write reviews but am shocked at how unprofessional this salon handled the situation and needed to share. There are too many good salons in Vancouver to waste your time here. read more

Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience at this salon. My stylist would not listen to what I wanted despite me showing photos and emphasizing multiple times what I was looking for (bayalage with copper tones). Instead, she had her own idea of what I should do with my hair (solid colour) and would only do that. Later, she showed me photos of how she wanted to tone it, I said I didn't like that but she did it anyway. Thankfully she "fixed" it by re-toning after I said I was unhappy, though I ended up paying $300 for essentially the same hair that I walked in with, solid brown. Not at all what I asked for or wanted. Near the end she said that it's impossible to achieve what we see in photos because photos are enhanced. Hair wash was also unpleasant because I got sprayed in the face with water multiple times. I hate to post a negative review but sadly I will never recommend this salon to anyone. read more

I purchased a deal through The Red Pocket for a haircut and style with Allison for $29. This was my first visit to Is Salon and the salon itself is quite nice and conveniently located. My haircut was fine - I have long hair and wanted to keep it that way, with no special layers or complicated bells and whistles. Allison was nice, however, I found her to be a bit too pushy. I am fine with the cordial hairdresser chats, but almost right away Allison tried to sell me on thousand dollar extensions, and a $400+ Kerastraight treatment. This would have been okay, except she kept bringing it up even though I told her that those were well out of my budget and I wasn't interested. She made it clear that she was a Senior Stylist and normally charged $75/hour and that she didn't take walk ins; that she signed up for this deal because her friend has some connection to the site. She also kept telling me how I needed to get one hairdresser and stick with him/her so that he/she could get to know my hair. Of course, she said, "I'm not saying it has to be me". I'm well aware of the benefits of having a hairdresser to call my own, but I'm a 25 year old woman who doesn't care too much about spending a fortune on my hair and am perfectly fine bouncing around from one good deal to another. After all - hair grows back, right? Anyway, haircut was fine, but experience could have been more pleasant. I don't think Allison intended on making me feel uncomfortable, but her hard-selling approach wasn't my style. read more

I first went to Is. on a whim... was walking by, needed a haircut, and decided to see if I could just drop in. I've been going back ever since. I don't actually get my hair cut that often, only a few times a year, and I don't think I've ever actually made an appointment here, but whenever I pop in to see if I can get a quick chop they have always found a way to make room for me. I've seen at least 4 different stylists there and they have all been great. There's something to be said for a staff of stylists who know their craft well and are also super friendly and sociable to boot. Highly recommended! read more

I have been to this salon several times since it opened for various services including colour, cuts and hair extensions. Overall, the cuts and highlights were pretty good, no serious complaints and I generally think they have friendly staff but the owner is a bit stuffy. However, I would not recommend the glue in hair extensions at all! I was charged almost $500 for them and they completely ruined my hair. After a few weeks they started to fall out and looked very fake and ratty and dry. I decided to have them removed because I woke up every morning looking like there was a bird's nest on my head. However, removing them also meant losing half of my beautiful hair. Had I known the risks and negatives (I was told only how easy they were to maintain) I would NEVER have put them in at all. It is very ironic that I paid so much to have THIS extra hair and then one month later had virtually none of my my own left on my head! The owner had absolutely no sympathy for me and in fact, heckled me for complaining. I warn anyone to do their homework on what the glue can do to their hair. I have had excellent results with Mohair beauty clip-ins and would recommend this route if you want nice hair extensions for special occasions without the risks. read more
