I visited Irwin Stone last summer to look at rocks for a garden project. I was glad that they had an office right up front. I went in and got a pricelist, but the sales clerk seemed annoyed that I wasn't a contractor and wasn't helpful. I needed someone to look at my project photos and tell me how much of each kind of stone to buy. They do have clearly-marked numbers on the pallets, and that is very helpful. Prices seemed a bit high. I'd have to do more research on that. I don't need a latte with my purchase. I just want someone to actually talk to me. read more

In building out home and backyard, I have visited various stores and quarries to find the right stone. Amongst everyone, Irwin Stone is far superior all around. Steve P. has been extremely helpful and friendly in our dealings, FIVE STARS all the way. There were several changes that we had to make to our purchase order during the project. Steve was very accommodating to these changes and took the time to understand our revised measurements so to avoid stone wastage. Irwin's got it all. Unlike some posters here, I've had exceptional service. I have to say...do you want reasonable prices or do you want a latte with your purchase? Hand holding might do well in a European auto showroom.....this is a decorative stone business yard. Irwin's website has instructional video clips, lots of named stone sample pictures, delivery information and photos of their trucks. Customers are free to roam the yard. Presumably you can take pictures of stone to compare, what else is needed? The web has countless sites with detailed construction techniques to view. When I made my Irwin's selection, I paid and it was tagged with my name. The following day when my stone guy came to pick up, he called to tell me, there wasn't enough thick pieces for our project in the bundle I had selected. Irwin service desk made the change and credited me $900, instantly. Had I needed Irwin to deliver they would have for a nominal fee. I like Irwins selection. They can answer questions, but their website is self-illustrative and I can find lots of design ideas on my own, for which I am grateful. read more

The good: Quality of product is great and material in the yard is organized nicely and easily accessible. Showroom is nice. Location is conveniently located near the heart of Rockville. The not-so-good: If you are looking for bang for your buck your wallet will not forgive you especially if you need to buy in bulk. Had a much better experience at Tri-State off of Seven Locks. No frills. A slight bit further but they have a much larger selection of materials. Their prices are amazing too. If you have kids bring them to Tri-State. They will get a kick out of the huge rock quarry -- quite a sight to see. read more

Despite the fact that Irwin Stone has amazing stone that you can view easily with your vehicle, the fact that you MUST go to the location to order a delivery for boulders is so 1980. I am now working with another stone place that has the sales guy taking photos for me, I choose the pallet I like and we arrange delivery. I feel Irwin Stone has go to get with technology and not require in person selection. These pallets could be posted on a store website to purchase. Just got a delivery from Irwin, and the experience was so terrific that I felt compelled to come inside and write a review, something I rarely do. We are building a firepit in the backyard and needed the block materials and almost a ton of pea gravel. The salesman was helpful on the phone, the prices were very good, and the delivery came exactly when the promised. But then, when the driver got here, we realized that the big gate to the back yard was blocked by a pile of debris. The driver, John, was fantastic. He took the the time to figure out how he could solve the problem to work around the debris and get the materials into the backyard, right where we needed them to go. It would have been a HUGE issue having to relocate over a ton of material from the driveway to the yard, and I can't say enough good things about John's customer service attitude and success in making this experience great! read more

Had a rock delivered for my front yard. Got a great deal on a big old stone - then had to wait until winter (ground too soft) to get the rock repositioned. The rock was repositioned exactly as I wanted and face the right direction. Will definitely do business with them again if I need stonework or large boulders. read more

Irwins has a large selection of flagstone in their inventory with reasonable prices. The folks there are very business-like though and I wouldn't classify as friendly or going out of their way to help us. Just stone guys selling stone to masons and other contractors. So when "civilians" like us walk in our expectations on service are probably just a bit different. That said, I'd still go back for future stone needs and they came highly recommended by our mason. read more

For the past number of years, I have been dealing with Steve Pernie; a gentleman with great persona. Steve is always happy; smiles all the time, and never shows any sign of frustration, even with demanding customers as myself. Whether I call to make inquiries or show up in person, Steve is always able to make time to help meet my needs. I observe, as he deals with other customers, that they are equally pleased with his services. Steve is very knowledgeable about the different types of stones they carry. He is able to tell me how much I need when I give my measurements; hence making my work so easy. It is such a delight dealing with Steve Pernie. I recommend him highly. My experienced landscaper ordered about 8 yards of 1-3 inch screened river Rock. It came much larger- some 5x8 inches and would never pass thru a 1-3 screen. But by then the stone was on the street and driver gone. Put 1/4 load on my grass. Because stones larger, we came up short on coverage. Both landscaper and I called/spoke to manager. He blamed his wholesaler. Said order was'right'. Passed the blame and never stepped up. Perhaps business too good to care. They seem to be better suited for commercial. Avoid if you're residential customer. read more

Initially when I was purchasing I felt the customer service was good. I relied on what I thought was expert advise for a home project, giving calculated square footage to the salesman. As it turned out, I was sold double the amount of stone for the job and not enough stone dust to complete the job. Irritated that I had 1.5 pallets of flagstone left, I found an additional use for them since they do not return product purchased. I missed the call for delivery and came home to another pallet in front of my garage. Upon calling, I was met with a friendly attitude until I got upset that they could not return to move the pallet. The salesman kept talking over me. When I told him to shut up and listen to what I was saying, he hung up on me. I have used this distributor of stone in years past...NEVER AGAIN! read more

I love this place. It has a HUGE variety of stone, rocks and such and you can't beat the price. Comparably, I have paid 4x as much for gravel at a big box store. They are helpful, friendly and the customer service is impeccable. One Saturday I dropped a large piece of slate on myself while self serving from a pallet. The FOLLOWING Saturday when I went in, the manager, asked me about it. I guess one of the workers had told them about it and they were concerned. Sure, maybe concerned for liability but genuinely concerned about my wellbeing too. They do lots of business with local landscapers and contractors and self serve individuals too. read more

I saw different reviews about Irwin Stone, but was optimistic. Staff is not very helpful. You have to figure things out almost on your own in the yard of stones. You have to be careful with what size you order and check your invoice carefully. They delivered wrong size flag stones and when I called them they almost yelled at me and not being apologetic at all. I would keep away from that place. Sad part is, they don't care at all.
