Now that I have this quarry business DOWN, I went back to get more stone. My amazing project guy said to get a "Supersack" of the Delaware River Stone, 1-3". Called up Tri-State, and the guy on the phone asked if I was sure that's what I want, because the 1-3" is bigger than it used to be, and customers are complaining. I tried to wrap my head around that and decided to pay another visit in-person. I felt super confident this time: I knew where to park, I knew to get tags from the extremely patient man in the booth, and I had the price list ready to go on my phone. The biggest issue is that I want all the stones. I recently saw a Zillow listing for a wild house where the previous owner had made a stone canyon in the back yard, and I thought, that's me. Give me a few years. My eye was drawn to some gorgeous golden-hued stone that turned out to be Golden Creek Veneer. It was a bit out of my price range, and I was proud of myself for refraining, because I really only needed the river stone and a few more medium-sized boulders. I gazed longingly at the quartz, and finally settled on two pallets of different kinds of boulders and, as a treat to myself, a circular container of Bull Run Veneer, which is pretty nigh irresistible. I asked if delivery could happen that weekend, and checkout guy said there was a slim possibility, but probably the next week. The next day was unusually hectic, and I was shocked to get a call from the truck driver that he was on his way. I mean, great, but... there was a road crew practically in front of my house with half the street blocked off, and I had to get to a client within the hour. Delivery arrives. To his credit, the driver tried several possible ways to deliver my stone, but my driveway is what used to be an ordinary size and is now narrow compared to everything else in America, the electric cable hangs dangerously low, and I didn't want to sacrifice my freshly-planted butterfly garden. The driver asked me if I had requested the nifty three-wheeled forklift, and since I am only slowly gaining expertise in this area, I had assumed if they brought it the first time, it would reappear. I waved goodbye to that driver and getting my project done on the weekend. Lo and behold, I get another call later the same day, and it's the super awesome driver who came with the magical forklift last time! Luckily, I was back from my client. The driver placed the four pallets in my driveway absolutely perfectly. You have to admire those skills! He said they'd read my review, and I quickly ran back into the house and locked the door. The project is set to be completed today, and I can't wait to plant more flowers around it. I have no idea what to do with the leftover pallets. If anyone wants them, they're yours. I gained a level in quarry XP, so I can now start a consulting business as a quarry-midwife to other homeowners. read more

A cool stone yard that has tons of materials on site. To get to the sales office you need to drive down the hill to a trailer. The staff here is super helpful and talked us through all the options for a flagstone hearth we're looking to build. We looked at all the various options they had, but in the end didn't go with tri-state. We decided on getting a 6'x24"x1" slab and tri-state couldn't get us a piece at this thickness for the size. It's definitely worth a visit here for your stone needs though. read more

I visited their quarry. A man at the scale house told me that a loader would be with me shortly. After waiting 30 minutes I decided to call. The person I spoke to told me to flag down a loader, as opposed to getting on the radio and telling him what I need. Once I flagged down a loader, I stood there and waited for instructions from him. Instead of giving me instructions on where to move my truck, he just decided to violently move toward me with the loader stopping only 2' away.... The guy almost hit me! When I went into the office the old bald man, who I assume was the owner, told me that I should have moved out of his way! I am a contractor, so I am used to bad attitudes.... These people shocked me! I could not imagine the average homeowner having a very good experience here! These people are not only rude, and arrogant... they are straight up dangerous! read more

This is definitely a place that contractors, masons and those in the industry frequent and can maneuver around without a thought. With that being said, my husband sent me out her to purchase a pallet (ton) of stone for our walkway. Talk about fish out of water....totally out of my element. I go down to the Office (trailer) and ask about the stone I was looking for, the cashiers directs me by showing me a map and guiding me through. I go, find the area and stare at the pile of rocks - wondering how do I get a ton of rocks onto the truck....so here comes Ben...with a forklift - asks if I need help. I told him what I needed it for and he explained that the stone I was looking at is good but grainy and I should look around to make sure I know what I like. Ben said he will come and find me I find another grouping of stone that had the right color hues...Ben comes by - says that it's a good choice AND cheaper too (bonus). He got someone to load it into the truck. They weigh it, give you a receipt, you walk to the "office" to pay (where I see Ben again) - this guys is EVERYWHERE....while I am paying they are loading the ton of rocks into the truck and I am off. Successful trip for a girl who had no idea what she was doing. Thanks to Ben...who by the way was the owner. I didn't know that until the very end as the cashier said "oh, so you've met the owner". Great guy and super helpful. Daunting experience but they will help you if you ask. read more

Used Tri-State for a major project in my backyard. I was creating a stone patio with a southwestern look. I wanted sandstone, but also the crushed rock to lay it on. It took a little time on my part, but with the help of the people in the trailer and those working in the yard, I was able to find several types of stone that could work for me, from Tennessee and Arizona. After comparing prices and other characteristics (thickness, size of pieces in square feet), I picked out a couple types that I liked and arranged for delivery. I also arranged for delivery of about 20 tons of crushed rock at the same time. Tri State was fantastic on the delivery: dumped every bit of the crushed rock on the driveway w/o touching power lines over head, and left room for the four-five pallets of sandstone I'd ordered. All in all, working with Tri-State was a great experience. I can't recommend the helpfulness of the staff enough, as well as their competitive prices and great selection. I'm sure there are other quarries in the region, but if you live near Tri State I'd suggest trying them out. If you decide to drive there before calling, park out of the way of traffic and customers if possible, then walk around and take a look around at their selection. It will really help when you talk to the staff to know what they have and where it is. Bottom line, I highly recommend them for any project that requires natural or artificial stone. read more

Just had a really terrible experience at tri-state stone. This place is definitely not for the average consumer. You must be a contractor or mason to have any idea what the heck is going on. The staff was super unhelpful and had no interest in helping me pick up the flagstone I was looking for. The employee first told me to park way far away from where the individual stone was, and then he gave nondescript directions to where I needed to go down a muddy hill in the pouring rain. Turns out he could have just told me to park down the hill. When I trudged back after not finding what I needed, he ignored me while helping other customers. Not worth my time, audios. read more

I'm a native Washingtonian and I needed some kind of stone for a walkway and a driveway. I new once (long ago) there was a quarry at the beltway and River Road. I searched for it on the internet and found it----Tri State Quarry--that`s what it was years ago and they are still around. So I went there and I mentioned that I saw Carderock as the trade name of the quarry and when I asked if it was really the stone that they dug up they replied proudly that it was. I didn't ask but I guess it is called Carderock because that is the name of the area close by---unless the area was named after the rock----I didn't have time to look it up. I will tell you that staff here is extremely friendly and helpful. I purchased what they thought I would need for my walkway and driveway. They had ideas in making it simpler and less of a project to where it saved me some good money. I am writing this after the work was done. They had picked out the stone size and "color" if you will and it looks fantastic. I met Ben who is the owner and Bill who said he was a part of Tri-State. For some reason, finding a company that could deliver gravel to my house in DC was a huge challenge. Then I saw a recommendation for Tri-State on my local listserv so gave them a shot. I cannot rave enough about the experience. Simple and unbelievably fast ordering and delivery service. We ordered at 8:30am, and got approximately three tons of stone delivered by 11am that same morning. The stone is packaged in two very large and convenient sacks which make for a much tidier process than the "dumps" I have seen other companies do. I highly recommend Tri-State for anyone looking to purchase stone, sand, or gravel! Not only was ordering and delivery a cinch, the quality is also excellent! read more

Have to tell you, I just got off the phone with the patriarch of this fabulous local business, and he was so service oriented, that he offered to split the delivery load into half, making his driver make 2 trips, because we had some concern about the weight crossing over a bridge on our property. He didn't even hesitate, he just took care of our concerns and handled everything so courteously. Like the old saying, "If you aren't part of the solution, then you are part of the problem." Our contractor suggested this place for pavers for our front walkway. We first talked to them on the phone and they were very helpful. Then we visited the place. No doubt this is meant for contractors but the folks were very helpful. They listened to us and what we were looking for and wanted to build and gave their suggestions. They got the samples we wanted for us and once we selected the pavers we liked our contractor ordered from them. Their delivery again did a good job in delivering all the pavers and other supplies. Good selection and friendly service. Tri State had the large irregular stones we were looking for to create a bench area by our fish pond. We had looked in other places without success. We didn't need a palett. Jake was very helpful explaining where on Tri States' large grounds we would find individual large irregular stones and what to do once we selected some. I don't understand any negative reviews about this place. This is not HomeDepot or Lowes or some other place where they (may or may not) wait on you hand and foot... it's a stone quarry and yard with extremely hard working and knowledgeable staff who deserve the same respect that you yourself require. Drive or walk down the hill to the right as you enter the yard and be mindful of active work areas so as not block workers or other customers in. Enter the trailer and tell them exactly what you want, and they will help you. If you don't want to pay delivery fees, load your own gosh darn stone and don't expect someone with a cape to arrive. If you need to borrow a palette for your stone - there will be a $25 deposit. If you need more technical help - ask the kind staff in the trailer and bring your contractor unless you plan to do the work yourself. They have the best prices in the area... we checked. There are no returns or exchanges, so be sure to get exactly what you need. We will be returning for other stone projects around our home! read more

I have gone to their yard in the past and purchased gravel that I bagged myself. This is the way to do it at Tri-State Stone. Inspect the material yourself, load it yourself, transport it yourself. Unfortunately, last week I trusted their "price list"published on the internet, along with thier local delivery service. That was a mistake. I needed topsoil to redo our front yard, so I ordered what they list as "House Blend topsoil" on their price list. When I called to order I was assured it was good soil mixed with 50% leafgrow. Well, it's not. It seems to be quarry dust with at least 10-15% pebbles and stones. I can't say whether or not it's mixed with 50% leafgrow as they say. Now, they did advise me to come up and look at it myself before purchase -- and I did not. So I'm giving them two stars, because part of this is my fault. But the key issue here is that their published price list (available on thei internet) lists House Blend topsoil and the person I spoke to represented it as good soil mixed with 50% leafgrow. And that's why they deserve this bad rating. It's certainly not "topsoil." At the least, they should change the name. So, again, it'a a good place to buy stone, pavers, and gravel if you know what you are doing, you inspect everything yourself, you load everything yourself, and you transport everything yourself. But do not trust their wesbsite, especially their price list. read more

This place is a ripp-off. Don't buy pallet's from them. They stuff the center full of bad stone and only put representative good stone around the outside. They don't take returns or exchanges. They are very misleading dishonest people. Only buy what you can see. read more

This place has the worst customer service I've ever seen. We were there on a Saturday around 11:15. They close at noon. We spoke with one of the guys in the office who directed us to what we wanted. We were in the process of picking out stone. We needed only ten pieces total when another worker told us to hurry up-they were closing the computers. He said they were open six days a week and we should come back another day. Granted dc isn't far away but it would be inconvenient to come back for ten little pieces of stone. We asked if he wanted our business; he didn't seem interested in keeping it. So we left vowing never to return. Ended up at Home Depot which is where we should have gone to begin with for the quantity we needed. We wanted to give business to a local company though. If I could give 0 stars I would. In the market for 300 SF of custom ordered stone. Made a visit with a friend on a Wednesday and couldn't figure out where to park. This is not a problem for me, but it definitely was for the owner. He sarcastically stated " how are my workers going to get by". We parked in front of the trailer because we could find no other signage stating to do otherwise. It would be just as simple to politely request we move the car... The staff inside was equally sarcastic, condescending and down right rude. This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a business. Before leaving I directly mentioned to the man helping me (I believe this is the owners son) how dissatisfied I was with his service. He made it very clear how well their business Is doing and that "I should take a look around me". In other words, he meant that I should be impressed with all of his inventory and that my sale was not needed. Avoid this place like the plague! read more
