I just returned from a trip to New Zealand where the weather was unusually cold and rainy. The Mac in a Sac Polar Packable jacket was perfect! It kept me warm and dry. I also appreciated that it is reversible so I could switch colors when I needed it. I also loved the Eagle Creek Packable Backpack. It really does pack up easily and was just the right size to hold my "must-haves" on several short hikes. I didn't expect it be water resistant but everything stayed dry inside. So a recent trip through Sunport in Albuquerque gave me two busted zippers and a broken wheel on my hard suitcases. The baggage handlers must have Released the Kraken, when our flight landed, and the bags were hurriedly unloaded---take it easy, Muscle Men! Sheesh. Irv's Luggage Repair, in Vernon Hills, to the rescue! Howard took good care and replaced all the bumps and broken wheels and zippers and got the bags back to us before I could say "sopapillas" or "pass the Chile, yo!" These guys are professional, courteous and really honest on their pricing. Give them a try. UPDATED POST: I am happy to write this overdue update on my previous review! In January, I wrote a review explaining that I have been a loyal customer of Irv's Luggage for many years and frequently recommend Irv's to family and friends. I was disappointed to state that I would no longer be able to continue to make those recommendations after a friend I referred to Irv's Luggage had a less-than-favorable experience when attempting to purchase a carry-on suitcase for an upcoming trip. Fortunately, the story did not end there. The owner, Renee Silverman contacted me immediately with a very thorough and thoughtful response to the concerns I had expressed. The situation was taken very seriously, an explanation was offered and an apology extended. Renee also requested to reach out to my friend directly to have a conversation with her as well. Based on all of my previous and positive experiences with Irv's Luggage, the genuine, heart-felt care and willingness to rectify the situation did not come as a surprise. Fortunately, the story did not end there. Renee followed up with my friend to gain a better understanding of the details that transpired during her experience. I do not know the details of the conversation other than it was positive and beneficial for both parties. My friend's trust was regained and the situation was resolved to her satisfaction. I have had Tumi and Briggs and Riley luggage, and I'm an avid traveler. From time to time, the luggage wears or breaks, and it's a challenge to find authorized repair centers in my home area of Albany, NY. Luckily, Irv's is located a short drive over from Chicago O'Hare, and has ample free parking, and convenient hours. It makes it easy to stop by when passing through Chicago. A large, well lit, store with plenty of items to keep you interest, from full size wine suitcases to replacement locks and handle wraps. They also frequently have sales, so it's a good place to buy your original or replacement suitcases. Prices seem to be lower than other places. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and they've become my favorite luggage repair store. read more

I needed a new suitcase, and I couldn't find one that fit all of my requirements at Kohls or any of my normal stores. I'm glad I went to Irv's. I told the salesperson exactly what I wanted and I had my new bag in under 10 minutes. I should note that there is a wide range of prices, the first bag I looked at was $900, which nearly gave me a heart attack. That was before I had help from a member of Irv's staff who helped me find a bag in my budget. If I have a problem with my bag or it gets damaged, they can repair it for me. Horrible, horrible, horrible follow through. I wanted a quote to get my golfd bag repaired so per the website, I sent pictures and requested a quote. After a week I hearing nothing I called and they said to give them another week and I would get my quote. After another week I called again and I was promised a call back that day. We all have things that are our favorite and that we hate to let go. I happen to have a favorite suitcase. This suitcase has been with me for some years and it showed. The top handle was not secure, the zipper had an area that would snag and the wheels had taken a good beating. Since the suitcase was discontinued, buying another one was not an option so I looked into having it repaired. I came across Irv's Luggage. You can send pictures of what you need repaired to them via email for a general estimate which is great so you know ahead of time if the repairs can be done. I sent pictures of my poor suitcase and received a response the next day stating it could be repaired and an estimate of the costs. I took the suitcase in and was assisted by a very friendly lady who went over everything I needed done, wrote it all up and gave me the total and an estimated completion date. I was notified via email when my suitcase was ready. Upon pick up, the gentleman that assisted me went over everything that was done. Not only did they repair the handle, they reinforced it so now its even stronger than before. The zipper was repaired and glides smoothly and the wheels were replaced. (The old wheels were in a bag in the suitcase so I knew they were replaced). I was so excited to get my suitcase and very pleased with their service. My bag is like new! and ready to roll! read more

I went into Irv's to get a bag repaired. After multiple people took the time to look at it and suggest ways to fix it. They suggested I try the manufacturer first to see if they will cover it under warranty. They could have easily charged me $100 and I would have been on my way. But they did the right thing. While I was there, I ended up buying a bag for my son. Everyone in the store is very knowledgeable and has a customer first mentality. Yelp seems to want to dictate how long my reviews 'ought' to be. So, if I write something short, concise and to the point, they qualify my comments as a 'tip'. I've got news for the Yelp folks, (lean in and listen carefully), you Yelpettes don't qualify as the next installment of "Thought Control, Inc" in my book. Never have; never will. So keep your tips in a jar by the door. As for Irv's Luggage, these guys know their stuff and do great repair work. They correct poorly manufactured luggage as well as damage caused by over zealous baggage handlers over at the local airport. You know the ones, the gorillas who toss bags around as if they're so much cattle fodder. Yelp now qualifies this rambling tome as "rolling now" but is still asking if I've got more to add. The last period returned a bonus observation by Yelp, so I guess I'm done because they say 'this review is looking 'pretty epic' now. Nice! read more

Pete and the staff did a great job on repairing my luggage. I live in Iowa and they were the closest company I could find who could fix it. It was a gift from my grandmother 55 years ago. They were recommended by another company so I called them and mailed the piece of luggage. I received it back today and the zipper has been replaced beautifully. Our bags were damaged by the airline. Luggage handlers had grabbed the locks on the zippers and pulled the slides and pulls off. We sent the bags to Irv's for repair, got caught in the pandemic, so had to wait for reopening of shop. Pete kept us informed of when they were reopening. Called me a couple of days after reopening to tell me that the bags were repaired and ready to ship. Received the 2 bags back the next day, they were repaired and looked like new. It was a tricky fix because the repair needed a special piece, but they were upfront and explanatory in giving me an estimate and timeline. Drove from DT Chicago to Irv's so we could touch, open and get information on the different TravelPro pieces. Renee greeted us the minute we walked in the door. Came in here looking for a new carry on because mine was a) super cheap and b) falling apart. The employees were incredibly helpful when I wanted help but also gave me the space to browse and look at the options. And when I was ready to buy, they gave me a great deal on a blue carry on (I wanted blue so it would stand out). This place isn't cheap. There are other stores if you're looking for cheap luggage. Fast, Effective, Friendly Service! Irv's Luggage recently completed a repair of a broken handle on my Briggs and Reilly suitcase. United baggage handlers broke the handle on a recent flight and said I had to take care of repairs myself because it was "normal wear and tear". After doing research, I learned that my repair was covered by the Briggs & Reilly guarantee. Irv's Luggage was the authorized Briggs & Reilly repair center closest to me. When I spoke with their repair manager, Pete...he let me know that they would take care of the repair free if I could get the suitcase to them. As I live downtown, it was easiest to UPs the suitcase to them. He let me know it would take about three weeks and they would send the bag back to me when done. I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from Pete letting me know they took care of the repair in two weeks and it was being UPS'd back to me. I just received it and it is good to go! I do appreciate a business that does what they say they will do seamlessly and over-delivers! When I find myself in need of additional travel accessories or another luggage repair, I will most definitely go to Irv's Luggage. They are a friendly, efficient family-run business! My luggage handle broke off 3 years into my 10 year limited global warranty. I'm based in Michigan but the closest repair center's in Illinois! So I reached out to Francois and Pete after I found them on the Samsonite site as authorized service centers. But a few things made me wary about sending my luggage in: 1. Folks who've posted online (not about Irv's, but generally getting their Samsonite luggage repaired under warranty) saying that the repairs take 6 weeks+...that's way too long given how much traveling I do over the summer. 2. Others who write about mailing in their luggage in or making the trek to an authorized repair center only to be told that it's NOT covered by the warranty. 3. My handle had broken off when I was in Lyon, Paris. I made the trek to an authorized repair center there and they wouldn't do the repair because I neither had a paper receipt and they needed to order the part, which would take 2 weeks they said. To make a long story short, I called, confirmed with Francois and Pete that I didn't have a receipt, they said no prob, send us pics of the luggage tags inside, I popped in a $20 check to expedite repairs (normally repairs take 2+ weeks) and...little did I realize that the turnaround time was 24 hours. Literally. They received my luggage on a Tuesday and shipped it back to me on Wednesday. I can't recommend Irv's enough to buy your bags or do necessary repairs, if I could give them six stars for customer service and professionalism I would. read more
