I have driven by this theatre countless times on my way into Irvington, but never really knew what it was for (or if was even active) till I recently went to a free singer/songwriter showcase show here a few weeks ago. Keep in mind to not have high expectations of the condition or decor of this theatre - it's bare bones basically. I recently came during the winter months and it was freezing inside this theatre. Like, very, very cold as if no heat was turned on. The hot water in the bathroom didn't work either, lol. I know that this theatre is filled with a variety of shows: Rocky Horror Picture Show, live music, and more. The only reason I'm giving them 4 instead of 2/3 stars is because every month they feature 3-4 musicians in their singer/songwriter showcase for FREE, which you can't beat. I'm interested to attend more events here and see how it caters to other types of events.

    It's really a big space!

This old theatre is getting renovated and hosting various events as well. Today it is the location for the "11th Annual Alternative Gift Fair". We have checked out this gift fair in previous years because it is "The Place" to pick out a truly unique gift. I bought a necklace here for my Mom to give her sister in California. She ended up loving it and the little inscription of 'love you to the moon and back'. My wife found these cute little scarves with a zipper pocket for a phone. She got the buy 2 get 1 free deal, 3 gifts at one stop and locally made!!!! They are always hosting something in this space that is worth a look so come in and check it out!

You can usually find interesting tidbits about the history of this old theater online: movie house, porn house, vacant, haunted. This latest incarnation, as an art space/concert venue/movie theater seems to be working pretty well. Rocky Horror Picture Show plays fairly regularly at midnight, and on occasion other movies too. Mostly though, this is a place to go to a concert. We went to see Elephant Revival and The New Old Cavalry here. The shows are all ages, no alcohol and no smokes inside. There is a large area for dancing in front of the stage/movie screen. It was somewhat over-run with light up hulahoops the night we went, which was neat for about 5 minutes but then it got annoying. Getting hit in the face by an errant hoop is no ones idea of a good time. Behind the dancing area are old church pews, a few tables, and of course the movie theater seats. Most of the seating is moveable, so be careful. There were also painters with easels set up near the stage. Several large pieces of art are suspended from the exposed rafters. I decided one was a chromosome because I'm nerdy that way, and there was also a monkey riding a donkey. Rad. Tickets were only $10 each, and it was a bargain. The sound guy did a tremendous job that night...good enough that we bought CDs from one of the bands. Thoroughly enjoyable show. Hoosier Fat Daddy food bus was parked outside, and we enjoyed some tasty fries and a couple sodas out on the curb between sets. Only real negative was that the restroom was out of toilet paper AND paper towels both times I went in there. No prob. They're "hidden" behind the piano.

    Happy Halloween!

Since it was Halloween it only seemed appropriate to check out the midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. My friends and I were super excited. It was something that we had always wanted to do, but nothing could prepare us for our first midnight showing. Seriously, nothing. I'm glad I called the venue because doors opened at 10:30 and not 11 as the FB invite noted. There was a small line to get in, but the wait wasn't too terribly long. Free parking was across the street at Walgreens. Once I got inside I paid my 10 bucks (they do accept credit cards) and 4 bucks for a prop bag which included rice (wedding scene), newspaper (rain scene), toast (birthday scene), etc. Pretty cool concept. The staff was pretty nice. They were all in costume and were super friendly. The set up was traditional with an unusual mix of folding chair and, um, pews. There was a screen. It seemed so tiny. We wondered how we were going to be able to see a thing. The event finally started at Midnight! I think I actually squealed with excitement. Now, we anticipated some of your standard Halloween/Rocky Horror debauchery, but we saw a lot of boobs with pasties and butt cheeks. It was a little overwhelming after an hour. There was a costume contest that resulted in groping Bettlejuice. After 30 minutes, It was just too much. Can we please start the movie? Finally, around 12:30 the movie began. The screen actually wasn't that bad. At this show, crowd participation is a must. Silly me, I thought it was more of a sing-a-long kind of a thing. I didn't realize that when key words or line are stated in the movie then the audience calls out a response. Some of the responses were hilarious while others were so random and odd. One included Donald Trump. Well, allrighty then. I love the moments we could use the props. Throwing things and being rained on. It was pretty awesome! The rain scene was by far my favorite. There are also people acting out scenes, which was pretty hilarious. All and all this is an event I encourage fans of this cult classic movie to attend at least once. I believe the midnight showing is held monthly. It's a bit overwhelming and you will see and hear things you can't unsee or unhear, but it is all in good fun. I DO NOT recommend this for children under 17. It's way too much. The group in front of us with teenagers walked out because it was just too much. The Irving Theater is definitely an interesting place with a lot of character. I would definitely check out other events there.

Ask the Community - Irving Theater

Has this company resumed open mics on Monday and Thursdays?

Yes. On nice nights we are outside on the deck and lawn behind the theater (inside when it’s mnot so nice). See you soon.o

When are your open mics? :D I've been dying to play at one!

We do an Acoustic Open Mic every Monday, now from 7 to 10 and it may expand again soon to 6 to 10. And we do a Poetry Open Mic every Thursday from 7 to 9. Both right now are on the deck behind the theater. Both are free.

I would never really recommend the building for wheelchair users, though I've managed to get around it fairly well. The building began development in 1921 and was completed in 1922. Like many Masonic Lodges, the ground floor was intentionally designed to allow for retail spaces as this would help support the Lodge. If you're familiar with the Irvington Lodge, then you know that it bears on it the rather ominous "Lodge #666" marking. It seems fitting to have this be in a neighborhood recognized for its many haunted locations, but there's no denying it even creeps me out a bit. The building was rumored to be the host of Ku Klux Klan meetings in the 1920s - KKK Grand Dragon D.C. Stephenson lived only a few blocks away in a mansion on University Avenue. Until 1950, the Lodge also hosted the Irvington Post Office. The Irvington Lodge continues to be an actively utilized building. Retail spaces are taken by Irvington Vinyl & Books, Hampton Designs Studio & Shop, and LVLUP Gaming Lounge. Additionally, Mosaic Church uses the Lodge's entire 3rd floor. Accessibility is most challenging in the 1st floor retail spots, though I noticed during my recent visit that Irvington Vinyl & Books had installed a bit of a ramp trying to help the situation. It's certainly not ADA, though it is an improvement. You can get into the first floor of the lodge. There is an elevator to the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 2nd floor includes a theatre room, reception room, a fully functioning kitchen, and a buffet area. You can rent these facilities and the rates are pretty market friendly. The Theatre Room has over 2300 square feet and many period touches still in place. It's rather stunning. The Reception Room is right about 1400 square feet. The 3rd floor has a couple of large main rooms. Hardwood floors are in place throughout and there's a stunning balcony that would be great for a wedding (unless you're in a wheelchair - then it would suck). This is one of those buildings I can't help but love. I'd give almost anything to have an office here, though it would inherently be a not particularly wheelchair friendly one. You also have close proximity to the Irving and nearby Irvington area businesses. Renting the facilities requires the usual liability insurance in place and a deposit, though rates are pretty friendly. They don't have preferred vendors - so, it offers flexibility that some venues don't. The Irvington Lodge was acquired, I believe, around late 2017-2018 by longtime Eastside resident Yasha Persson and a team. Given the pandemic was right around the corner, it was a challenging time to acquire such a beautiful building. However, here's hoping it continues to be such a beautiful, vibrant part of Irvington.

While previously it served the military here, the fort itself is long gone and the building now falls under the non-profit umbrella of Arts for Lawrence. Arts for Lawrence acquired the building in 2016 and began some pretty significant renovations including new technologies, film capabilities, cosmetic upgrades, and a building addition. The building can be used for both movies and stage performances and is actively used for both. Indy-based Heartland Film recently moved into the Fort Ben area (in the Sterrett Center) and often utilizes this theater including for its current holiday movie series. Accessibility has greatly improved under Arts for Lawrence (fantastic non-profit), though there are obviously limits given the age of the building. As a general rule, attending events here should be no problem for those, like myself, with mobility issues. There's parking right across from the building. I'm not sure about the seating capacity here, though it's a relatively intimate setting with probably no more than a couple hundred seats. The theatre itself is close to several nearby restaurants and it's easy to make attending an event here a date night. Fort Harrison State Park is also less than five minutes away!

I really should. The Garfield Park Arts Center, like the park itself, falls under Indy Parks. Originally built in 1922 as the "Community House," it was designed to look like a picnic shelter with enclosed walls, high ceilings, and fireplaces at each end. In 1930, a large swimming pool was located in the area that is now the parking lot. At that time, it was primarily used as a locker room and rec center area. In 1990, the pool was removed and replaced by the Aquatic Center that is now located at the Burrello Family Center. In 2006, the "Community House" was remodeled with a $2.7 million grant. It became the Garfield Park Arts Center. The 8,000 square foot facility now houses a multi-use performing arts space, exhibition hall, visual and production arts classrooms, a recording studio, a literary arts library, and a rehearsal room. The GPAC is big enough that it typically has multiple exhibits going. For example, right now there's a modern quilting show, a solo show by Jay Hamm, and a show by Christy Harp. GPAC hosts a variety of workshops and classes including current activities like voice and piano lessons, ceramics, and quite a few visual arts options including those specifically for children. The classes are way affordable - for example, there's a $10 rock painting class for kids. As someone who has a pet rock, I'm all for rock painting. GPAC also hosts summer camps and special events. The calendar is on their website. I'm particularly enchanted by a classic movie night. They've also assisted with some of the public art in Garfield Park. The art center tends to be open limited hours - for example, 1-5pm during the week. It does participate in First Fridays. I'm a big fan of Garfield Park and I'm a big fan of having access to the arts. I find this facility to be quite accessible and even more after their 2006 renovation. It's not perfect (no building of this age is), however, it's quite good. Prices are affordable and the center itself has a nice combination of nostalgia with contemporary comforts. Especially for those with kids who may enjoy the classes, GPAC is a definite winner.
