    Binx the kitten
    Erin O.

If I could give negative stars I would. I found a kitten in my back yard. I have two cats and couldn't take in a third. Tried so many rescues and resources, no one could take him. I talked to the humane society and they told me to drop the kitten off the following week after the weekend. I came in, and they told me then they couldn't take him because they were full. I was flying out that day for a trip so I had to take him in and they told me to try the animal services next door. The man there at the front desk was extremely rude and derogatory. I filled out paperwork with the name we gave the kitten and notes saying to PLEASE CALL ME before deciding to euthanize. I would find a way to take him in before that option. He filled out the paperwork on his computer (after waiting an hour and a half) with NONE of the info I gave him and renamed the three month old kitten Miracle. I asked to make sure he wouldn't be euthanized and the man was very evasive about his answers. I called back two days later to see about having someone pick the kitten up and guess what, he was immediately euthanized. I am absolutely devastated because he was just the sweetest baby and had a whole life ahead of him. I will NEVER go there again. Ever!

Adopted from this location - sweetest cat

If I could give this places 5+ stars, I would. I've fostered here for the last few years and have interacted with the staff here a ton. They have a great culture here that puts animals first. They're accommodating and kind. I've had questions about foster animals at night and they are so quick to respond or offer a visit with their vet. We ended up foster-failing a cat from them 2 years ago who has been our world since. I highly recommend this place to adopt from, foster or volunteer with.

A huge round of applause for the employees of Irving Animal Services! I adopted my new BFF; Sophie (formerly Diamond) here at the beginning of March, and not a day goes by where I don't think about the heroes who saved her and gave her a shot at the life she deserves. I stumbled upon a listing for Diamond on Instagram. She had a very sad past (been the subject of three cruelty investigations, heartworm positive, overbred, emaciated) and had been nursed back to health and was looking for a furever home. I was actually on work assignment out of state when I saw her listing, and I was totally in love with this sweet pittie. I kept checking her listing everyday I was away and when I got back to Dallas, I called Irving Animal Services to inquire about her. I had been told a lot of people where interested in her, but that they wanted to make sure she went to the right home. I was really happy that they were asking questions about my background with the breed and what my living situation was like (she couldn't be in a house with other dogs) because they really had her best interest at heart. After I got through the initial questions, I was able to speak with the Animal Control officer; Patrick, who was her main caregiver and had invested a lot of his time training and getting her ready for adoption. He really cared deeply for her and I was really happy that she had been loved so much. A few days later I got to meet Diamond (now Sophie) for the first time and I knew, she was family! My last Pittie had passed away in November and I had really missed her and as a way to honor her, I wanted to open my heart and home to a deserving pup. The adoption process required a little paperwork and a $25 adoption fee. I was provided with her medical history and before I left- several employees were asking if I was adopting Diamond, and they were genuinely happy for her to get adopted. They all seemed personally invested in seeing her go to a good home. It was very touching and I cannot say enough good things about Irving Animal Services! They didn't give up on Sophie and so many people were kind enough to care about this poor, sweet girl having a life. A good life- like all dog's should have. Sophie has settled in nicely into our family and she lights up our life! She's exuberant, sassy and full of sweetness. There are real heroes working here and I'm so grateful for everything they've done. You guys rock!

This dog park is impressively large with lots of grass for chasing and playing. The area inside the fence isn't entirely flat and has a few small trees for added points of interest. There's actually 4 fenced areas although on the occasions we've visited, only the 2 nearest the parking area appear used with any regularity - 1 for small (under 25lbs) dogs and one for large (over 25lbs) dogs. We visit the large dog area, so this review doesn't really cover the small dog area, although it looks pretty similar to the large dog area. My only "complaint" is that there's not a lot of shade available in any of the fenced areas, so on a hot, sunny day, it'll get pretty toasty unless you want to get up close and personal with other owners to share the single double-sided bench under the shade structure. There's another bench and some large rocks available for sitting, but neither are shaded. Also, beware of the mud pit that seems to develop near the water fountain in the large dog area even during dry weather - after a good rain, it's particularly nasty.

My experience started off positively--I was welcomed without issue and began completing my assigned hours. At no point during my time there was I informed of any concerns, misconduct, or violations. However, without any warning, explanation, or justification, I was suddenly told not to return. When I asked for clarification, the only response I received from management was: "we reserve the right to allow or deny someone to work with us." No further explanation was provided, and no opportunity was given to address or correct any alleged issue--because there wasn't one. This kind of treatment is not only unprofessional, but also deeply unfair. Individuals completing community service are often doing so under strict deadlines and requirements, and to be dismissed without cause can have serious consequences. The complete lack of communication and transparency from management raises serious concerns about how decisions are made within this organization. Based on my experience, there appears to be a disregard for fairness and accountability, and decisions may be influenced by factors that have nothing to do with a person's actual performance or behavior. That is extremely concerning. I will be formally escalating this matter, but in the meantime, I feel it is important to share my experience so others are aware. No one should risk investing their time and effort into an organization that can arbitrarily decide to dismiss them without cause or explanation. Proceed with caution.

A day before he was to be euthanized, I get a call from Tracy with the shelter letting me know I can have him back and the $115 adoption fee would be waived. That was really kind! BUT when I picked him up, he had a broken tooth, he was malnourished with dry blood and cuts all over, really skittish and a completely different dog than when I dropped him off. They also didn't have any of his belongings. My dog was at this shelter for 2 months and I PAID to surrender him. I cried looking at the horrible shape my dog was in. I wish I would've known they didn't give a fuck about his well being. I cried for days after I got him back thinking of the horrible experience he had in "jail." It's unfair. I wouldn't take a stray to this shelter honestly, but I am considering sponsoring other pit bulls so this doesn't happen again. It's disgusting.

Before the adoption there is an application & home check. In both cases of adoption the foster mothers checked in with me several times to ask if the transition was working out & were available for any questions I might have. I would recommend a rescue group like this - (especially if you are not experienced with dogs straight out of the shelter), as they are experienced with socializing the dogs and have a supportive medical network for needs that might need to be addressed when the dog leaves the city shelter. Before I adopted these 2 I had several Tzus from breeders over the years. I mentioned to Missy, a foster mother, that "I wish I knew more background, etc". She said "Don't worry, these dogs are just happy to be alive & with someone who cares". I thought "yeah, right", but she was absolutely correct, they have both been a total joy in our lives.

My girlfriend and I walked into the store, followed the signage, and turned left about halfway into the store. There, we were immediately judged from two overly fastidious and persnickety (older) women. It was the "tattoos" or the "bold hairstyle" where references were made, and southern judgmental-ism rested. Looking beyond their poor approach, we introduced ourselves, and the ringleader of the troupe came forward to exclaim, "I know who you are. I looked you up online. You have a well-paying job but have no place owning a dog. We don't allow anyone to to adopt that works more than as much as you do!" Stunned at the complete lack of sanity, sheer ignorance and irrevocable (lofty) expectations, I replied, "Well, my family has owned eleven dogs since I was four, and all of them have had wonderful lives. My parents worked normal jobs (six to eight hours) like 95% of the population in the United States, and those dogs never had any issues being alone." A retort bounced back, "You're just not ideal for owning a dog. Good luck to you." Completely flabbergasted, my girlfriend and I walked away. It was definitely for the best that we did not adopt from them... I wound up rescuing a purebred Beagle from Lost Paws Rescue of Texas. The owner, Lisa, conveyed some troubling information about the lady we dealt with at DFW Tzus and how their organization is conducted. Even further concerning, the manager of the PetSmart shared his observations with me, to the tune of "their adoption expectations are elitist and close-minded. That's not what adopting is about, and not what our store stands for." Interestingly, DFW Rescue Me is the exact opposite of DFW Tzus as far as their inner-workings and dedication to finding forever homes for animals. Racism exists not purely and solely in the form of what most people think: skin color. But, more so in the fact that certain styles (fashion) or even lifestyles signify a tattered, sometimes criminal life. I am happy to report that my girlfriend and I both have advanced degrees, excellent careers, strong family ties, and surprisingly Conservative views. Appearances usually are deceiving, and there is no place for judgmental minds or racism in our world any longer.

The pricing here, however, is outrageous. If you have to hospitalize your pet, I've been quoted pretty consistently around $3,000-$3,500 per night, including monitoring and treatment. They almost always recommend a multi-night stay, so it's not uncommon to receive a quote of $10,000 or more for care. I make decent money, and that's more than a month's pay for me. It would take several months to recover financially from that. For anyone making nowhere near a $200,000 salary, that's most likely out of reach. They also want everything paid up front, as if you just have $8,000-$10,000 sitting in your wallet or bank account. Basic meds will almost always run you $80-$200 per prescription depending on what you need, but I've never made it out of VCA for less than $200. Actual care is hit or miss. I've had amazing experiences with some rock-star vets who didn't stay there long, and I've also had really bad experiences with vets who don't listen and seem to over-prescribe medication. Most fall somewhere in the middle. The vets are "fine," but most are nothing special, just run-of-the-mill vets you could find at any standard local clinic. For the prices they charge here, I'd expect more. The hospital itself isn't terrible per se, but with how expensive the care is, many people will simply have to put their animal down because there's no way most average or lower-income Americans have $10,000 sitting around waiting for a vet emergency. You may have to drive outside the city, but there are much more reasonably priced vets around the Metroplex. The only time I'd really recommend going here is if your pet needs emergency service between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM, since you may not have another option.
