I will update my review once the mantels have been completed. We were told it would take 7-8 weeks.

Over the years, I've had other handymen pass on the project. I had a handyman who was able to fill the rotted areas with wood filler, sand it, and restain it. I've even had a gate company tell me that they could not save the gate; it would need to be completely replaced. Bill was able to cut out the rotted pieces of wood, replace them, and restain the whole gate (he also repainted the decorative hardware on the door as well). Moreover, he discussed the project with a buddy of his and they determined that the gate was sitting over a muddy part of landscaping which is probably what facilitated the deterioration of the wood. We found some leftover pavers in our storage shed and Bill extended the pavers so the gate would sit over pavers instead of mud. Before he embarked on the wood gate repair, Bill also installed a valance/shade over a window. He made the necessary calculations to ensure that the valance/shade would be centered on the wall and window. He also made sure that the valence was leveled. Bill is honest, meticulous and detail-oriented. If you want someone to treat your project and your home, like it's his own, I would give Bill a call.

I found Boris by Googling "wood carver near me" and at the top of the short list popped Boris's…read moreYelp listing and website- where it should be. The BEST Yelp treasure I've found to date. I needed to find a wood carver and museum quality restoration expert having recently locally purchased my "Rosebud" quest for 50 years: a large 19th century, German, coin operated, mechanical music box in a 130 year old walnut cabinet sitting on a matching disc storage cabinet. The music box cabinet had some issues- some side panel and door warpage so that the door did not come close to closing, overall dull finish compared to the storage cabinet, missing the top pediment, bubbled veneer, trim molding glued on badly in earlier repair, cracked trim, large cracks in the back soundboard and the top soundboard (negatively effecting the sound), a missing dovetailed walnut coin drawer with lock, and a missing dovetailed, intricately fitting and scalloped walnut and glass dust cover for the motor. My plan was to have the music box cabinet "machine out" restored, while the motor was being cleaned and lubed by another craftsman. Boris gave me an extremely fair and reasonable estimate for all the "lost art specialty" work to be done. While he is a warm, friendly and humble man, he exudes confidence and ultra "having his act together". You'll know you've come to the right place, the moment you enter his organized shop and see the magnificent, one of a kind wood carved creations he has made for 40 years, since he apprenticed in the "Old Country" before moving to America 30 years ago. There is nothing he can't do with wood, and his precise measurements and engineering. And he has binders of photos of his creations that establish his creds. His work ethic is like you don't find here anymore- 6 days a week and about 10 hours a day. And he will be finished in the time he tells you, or even sooner in my case. I couldn't believe how fast, considering the amount of work. My job, was a relative walk in the park for Boris, more in line with furniture restoration, although the job he did on fabricating the dove-tailed walnut coin drawer and scalloped, wood and glass dust cover- exactly mimicking the originals I found in reference pictures, and carving for the top pediment, could not be done by an ordinary "furniture repair/ refinisher". Also, the door was severely warped and would not close. Boris made magical adjustments so that it closes perfectly and installed period mortise locks exactly centered and carved, that look like originals. That's the difference between a museum quality restorer (what Boris did in his native country) and a refinisher/repairer. He restores and keeps everything original that he can, not just slapping on stain and spraying lacquer. I'll let these project pictures speak for themselves. If you're a straight shooter, honest person, looking for a wood carving artisan and a fine human being as well, and you're not looking to cheat a craftsman, and you just want to get a project done beautifully for the price you agree to pay, go see Boris. If you're a jerk or trying to cheat an artist and good man--- please go somewhere else.

He asked my uncle, an artist (Craig Pursley, check him out), to find someone who could create a custom headboard and my uncle found Boris via Google search and his website. I picked up my grandfather and drove him to Boris' shop. As we walked in, we saw amazing carvings, from delicate landscapes to giant tables. The back room was the workshop and there was a large tree trunk awaiting Boris' attention. We explained the idea and immediately Boris started sketching a few thoughts. He explained different options for materials, color, and design, all very patiently (neither my grandfather nor I are artsy). My grandfather was very impressed by his knowledge and expertise. He's an 89-year-old Italian so respect isn't something he offers easily. Boris sent me the fully-sketched design later that evening. We discussed the font for the text a bit and he was very open to suggestions. A few weeks later, I picked up the board. It was amazing! Boris chose the most beautiful piece of walnut, with graining and flow that highlights the curve of the board. The lettering and gold highlights were perfect. The horse silhouettes were perfect. Boris ensured so many thoughtful touches. The steps and pedestals below the silhouettes, the balance of the sizes of the letters, the small notches to highlight the end of the boards... it's a fantastic creation. Boris is truly, truly a master craftsman and master woodcarver. I will definitely go to him again if I ever need something, or perhaps if I want to simply treat myself with something beautiful.

I learned some…read morebasics from my dad (son of a carpenter) who is good at fixing things and is a skilled amateur woodworker. I also like seeing their e-mail specials, coupons and freebies for making purchases. Recently I was contemplating whether "mechanics gloves" would work as full-finger weight training gloves in order to reduce the oils and sweat from my hands during workouts. A couple of years ago I put a lot of time, effort and expense into sanding and repainting my dumbbells with a nice forged pewter color. I would like to do more to preserve that. I tried the Harbor Freight HARDY brand "High-dexterity impact-resistant work gloves" that are a mechanics style with the rubber pads on top. I preferred the lower end thinner ones, but they were not very comfortable. I did notice the run a little small. I have very average-sized hands and normally wear a large (L), but those were tight with these, so I got the x-large (XL) with these Hardy's. The touchscreen compatible sort of kind of worked with the thumb and index finger but was not easy. Maybe the gloves need to be a snug fit? Maybe not? They do appear durable and are nice looking. I did an Internet search, and it appears you "may" be able to machine wash them. If I try that I will place them in firmer laundry zipper bag and wash them on GENTLE cycle in cold water. Then I would place them on a paper towel to air dry indoors. In the end, these were not a good fit for my needs as they were too bulky and thick. I will keep looking and maybe try another brand and smaller profile version of mechanics gloves. The staff here are always polite and efficient.

Sadly, we have to adjust our review for Ryan and his team. We trusted that Ryan would do an…read moreexcellent job, so we reached out to him when we decided to update the kitchen cabinets in our new home. When he initially sent us the plans from the measurements he took at our home my husband noticed very quickly that they were way off by at least 20 inches. If they proceeded with the way Ryan measured the upper cabinets wouldn't have fit at all and he would've had to remake the entire thing. On the day of install I was not happy with the color difference between the sample stain piece we picked and the color the lower cabinets turned out. They were darker and had a yellow hue to them. See photo. As you can tell by the photo the small sample piece was much different. Additionally, the upper cabinets had a much more neutral tone to them. This is what I wanted for all the cabinets. My husband talked me out of mentioning my disappointment in the cabinet fronts to Ryan and assured me it was fine enough. The real problem happened when some of the cabinet doors didn't fit right during the install and they had to remake them. There were two larger cabinet doors that were measurement errors on their end and three smaller doors that I wasn't happy with because the reveal was much too large between doors. Ryan wasn't happy about remaking the 3 smaller doors and made it known to me. I told him we would pay for it. Ultimately he didn't charge us, which we appreciated, however, I think he could've been kinder about the way he approached it when I said I wanted them remade. When they arrived with the replacement doors we were shocked at how different they looked than the rest of the lower cabinets. See photos. Initially he told us all wood grain is different and that's just the way it is. We are fully aware wood grain can be different and we're willing to accept this with our lower cabinets not matching our uppers, but with the cabinet doors being right next to each other the tone difference looked ridiculous. It honestly looked like a showroom cabinet with sample stains. He reluctantly agreed to remake them. At this point we thought he'd take extra care to select a veneer that would closely resemble the original doors. Sadly this did not happen. The installer showed up weeks later to install the replacement doors and they are a different tone than the original doors. At this point Ryan is offering no solution. He refuses to come look at the doors in person and the last text we received from him was unprofessional. We paid top dollar for this project & the quality and customer service Ryan provided is really upsetting. Now we have to hire someone else to fix a problem Ryan should have the decency to make right. Sadly, we can no longer recommend this business.
