I am not usually the type to leave a negative review, but I feel this experience needs to be addressed in office. To be clear, this review has nothing to do with the hospitality of the staff or physicians at Irvine Dermatology. Everyone I have interacted with, including Dr. Koupaie, has been kind and pleasant during my visits. My concern is specifically with the organization and management of my Accutane treatment from beginning to end. I was already very anxious about starting Accutane because of the side effects and the strict and tedious process involved with obtaining the medication. Despite those concerns, I decided to move forward. At my first visit, I paid my copay, completed the required bloodwork, took a second pregnancy test in the office, and then attempted to pick up my prescription. At that point, I found out that my iPLEDGE account had not been properly set up by the office. Because my account could not be located in the system, my treatment was delayed by an entire month and I essentially had to start the process over again. This was extremely frustrating and inconvenient. As my treatment continued, I also noticed that during follow-up visits the medical assistants would frequently seem unsure about which month of treatment I was on or what dosage I was taking. I usually corrected the information myself and initially did not think much of it. Toward the end of treatment, however, the repeated confusion about which month I was on became concerning enough that I checked my own prescription history through my pharmacy. I discovered that I was already on my final month of the six-month treatment. I called the office to confirm, was told they would look into it, and later received a text confirming that my treatment was in fact complete. That is what concerned me the most. If I had not independently checked my prescription history and researched the medication myself, I could have continued under the impression that I still had additional months of treatment remaining. For a medication like Accutane, which requires close monitoring and has some pretty strong side effects, I find it alarming that these types of mistakes were made on a consistent basis. I am not writing this review out of malicious intent, and I want to reiterate that the staff has always been personally kind to me. However, the repeated discrepancies in my treatment history made me question the accuracy of the office's charting and how closely patient treatment plans are being tracked. Patients should be able to trust that their medical records, dosage, and treatment timeline are being monitored accurately without having to independently verify everything themselves. I've been with Kaiser HMO most of my life so this was my first time being seen by a Dermatologist using my PPO insurance! I called and spoke to Sai who assisted with scheduling my next day appointment, verifying insurance, and getting me set up on the portal so that I could complete my paperwork prior to the visit. There is a good amount of paperwork but the team is there to help via phone/text/in person if you have any questions. The paperwork is also very thorough so you understand the office's policies and know what to expect. They are not in the plaza with the restaurants, they are in the plaza right next to it. There is plenty of parking in front of the office. When you walk in, you're greeted by the front desk and cozy and inviting lobby area. Theresa at the front was very friendly, checked me in, double checked my paperwork and processed my copay. I didn't wait long and was brought into the room shortly after. The two team members doing the pre-visit screening were also thorough and friendly. Dr. Marjon was approachable and punctual. She was knowledgeable and answered the questions regarding my skin concerns. After the appointment, I was given a fun sample goody bag and my prescription was sent to my pharmacy. I don't recommend them. The doctor was fine when I actually went for the visit. However they do all communications through a third party service so you have no way of actually communicating with the doctors front office. Every call is just a message that goes to the doctors office and you have to wait for a call back. But the call center literally told me "I cannot promise you will hear back". This is after I got a mole removed and I'm waiting for the test results to see if it's concerning or not. Go elsewhere. This is just a mill. Also one last data point for consideration , I never trust a doctor that REQUIRES you to sign an arbitration agreement. That means that they are over worried about litigation more so than other doctor offices. Legitimate offices will only ask for it but won't mandate it. This signals that their insurance probably is requiring it, as a condition perhaps because they get more claims against them than other doctors in their network. After this experience I can see why. Won't go back. Cancelled my next appointment and canceled my son's appointment too after this experience. Irvine has amazing doctors no need to risk it with a shady office. read more

This review is overdue, but I wanted to share my experience to bring awareness. During my visit, the doctor misdiagnosed my shingles as "deodorant irritation," and the entire consultation lasted under five minutes. She was sarcastic and cut me off while I was trying to explain my symptoms, which made me feel dismissed. I also ended up having to pay some out-of-pocket costs despite the incorrect diagnosis. ZERO STARS... Update: Still not taking accountability! Probably a good idea not taking insurance, seeing how you like your payments to be paid in full the day of and/or with in 3 days after office visits. Proofing the photos. This is your practice and you implement these policies! I have and everyone else have the right to question what they don't understand. I addressed my question and frustration to YOU and you told to call the number on the back of my insurance card. Insurance rep confirmed that it's NOT a common practice to collect that many office visits and to collect the full amount of the procedure upfront. I'm not sure what good it would do to talk to your Billing Manager.. to which I did and she will relay the same concern and frustration I had back to you!?!? ZERO STARS. Find another dermatologist to go to. This place has Unethically billing practice a doctor who won't take accountability and is also condescending. I have never been to an in network doctor that requires a CC on file +3% processing fee, make you PAY for the Full Balance of the procedures up front AND will automatically collect any balances 72 hrs after billing. I was billed on Friday 11am and automatic charged my CC at 10am on a Monday morning)! She in network and charged me 3 office visits AND made me pay the whole cost ALL upfront (will refund what insurance covers, had to call to get a refund) all for the same issue. She billed my son and charged his CC 72hrs later! She collected almost $703.60 from me to remove a cyst. When i questioned why am i being charged for 3 office visit (consolation, day of procedure and removal of stitches) and paying in full when she's in networks with my insurance. Her reply was "if you don't understand.. you need to call your insurance. You know the number on the back of your insurance card? That's the number you need to call. They can be the one to explain those things to you". I'm well versed on the insurance lingo and normal billing practices.. that's why I question her and looks like she did not like that. Parking was easy, and I really appreciate that there wasn't a long wait - my appointment was promptly taken care of and my office visit was quick and easy. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and Dr. M. is also easy to interact with. I was so happy to get a same-day appointment, as usually the dermatologists I've called in the past always have a several months waiting list. I like that Dr. M. left room for me to ask questions and provide clarity on what to expect every step of the screening and prevention tips. The office is clean and well organized, and I'll be looking forward to visiting again next year to hopefully get a clean bill of skin health. I had an appointment with Dr. Jafar Koupaie, and I would give zero stars if I could. At each appointment, you are apparently only allowed to address one concern. For example, I had two concerns: acne and hair loss. I first talked about my acne. (He leaves the office ALL THE TIME. You say something and he immediately walks out, leaving you alone.) After discussing my acne, I brought up my hair loss, and he gave an awkward smile and said that this time he would "let it slide," but that these are supposed to be two separate appointments because they are different issues. After that, he gave me some injections. He simply administered them and sent me on my way without putting any gauze or bandage over the injection sites. He left me bleeding, to the point that I even stained my shirt. My husband had to get some cotton pads to stop the bleeding. Terrible experience and extremely poor patient care. The women who work with him are very kind, but this doctor provided one of the worst medical experiences I have ever had. read more

New patient review! For reference: I suffer from severe ezcema including pus, bleeding, and itch for 5 years. Looking for a more experienced Doctor to take my concerns more serious in my specialty treatment and a more organized, on top of it, and kind clerical desk. Doctor review: Met with Dr. Jafar K. Very much met with serious, professional, non judgemental communication. Provided more at home and lifestyle recommendations such as less harsh Cerave soap and lotion when showering daily, which is important when first meeting a patient and thinking and learning about their daily lifestyle at home and not just in the office. (My previous Dr. did not address my holistic health the way this Dr. thoughtto address.) I can tell he has experience as they state because he knew exactly the speciality medication I was referencing and suggested the same family of specialty medication that is stronger, but with proper labs before I start of course. Medical Assistant Review: Very kind therapeutic communication. Takes notes and advcates with Dr. Jafar K my case. Very thorough and documents clearly which is important in medical field. Smiles a lot. Front Desk Clerical Assistants: Super kind therapeutic communication. Non judgemental if you came in a rush and did not have ID or if you struggle to do certain online forms. The other lady who provided my lab documents was also super kind. Both patient and have nice choice of words when talking to patients. Entry/Patient Room Space: Super clean and super new! Front lobby is gorgeous clean and offer water and coffee and tissues and plenty of sanitizer. Within the patient room, very new medical chairs and spacious room that is organized and not cluttered with medical devices. Can tell they keep it very clean despite any medical procedures that may take place there. Honestly very impressed. The only con is that the online pre intake forms for new patients did not accept my photo or file uploads for my ID and insurance so I had to constantly repeat the process on my phone, but the desk just took the cards and scanned it at her desk the old school way offices should do it. Not really their fault, technology is mostly up to date . Will update after this first appointment to help keep the establishment affordable and credible for other severe ezcema sufferrers like me and for Doctors and staff who put care into their practice. Shadowed here as a pre med student and it was absolutely wonderful! Everyone was super welcoming, helpful, and friendly, and immediately helped me feel comfortable. Based on what I observed, Dr. Vatanchi is incredibly kind and helpful towards her patients, answering questions with detail and providing a treatment plan clearly! I brought my daughter in for a skin appointment because I chose this office specifically for their advertised integrative approach to treating skin conditions. We were genuinely excited and hopeful that we could get to the root cause of her acne in a more holistic way. Unfortunately, our experience with Marjon Vatanchi was very disappointing. From the moment she entered the room, her demeanor felt cold, condescending, and standoffish. It did not feel warm or welcoming, and I didn't even feel comfortable asking the questions I had prepared. As soon as I mentioned that we were hoping to explore more holistic options, I felt dismissed. Instead of discussing integrative treatments, she immediately recommended strong prescription medications such as Accutane or antibiotics. My daughter is young and wants fast results, but as her mother I needed to express my concerns especially regarding Accutane. When my daughter and I talked through those concerns, the doctor seemed visibly irritated that we were even discussing it. Overall, the entire appointment felt off and uncomfortable, I don't want to throw the race card out there but I did wonder if her demeanor towards us had to do with us being Latino. I cannot say what the reason for her attitude was, but it certainly did not reflect the integrative care this clinic promotes on their website. I do want to mention that the front office staff was very kind and welcoming, which we appreciated. If you are looking for a truly holistic or integrative dermatology experience, I would recommend seeking care elsewhere. I was a patient with another local dermatologist and when I called during the holidays, they said the doctor had taken the month of December off. So I set out on a search for another dermatologist who was available sooner. I left a message and her office was very responsive. They were able to offer an appointment fairly quickly. The office is clean, beautiful and parking is very easy. She is my dermatologist for life! Negative stars if I could! I had a horrible experience here. I took my family member here and they were seen by Dr. Koupaie. He spent no more than 1 minute with us. He brought in a needle and said he would inject steroid into 2 minor acne lesions that were a couple of days old (therefore didn't need injection). He didn't ask for consent, and he didn't go over the risks and the benefits. He then falsified the medical record to state that he did ask for consent and that he did go over the risks and benefits, essentially committing medical fraud. Because I brought up these concerns, I asked to be reassigned to Dr. Marjon, I was told this couldn't happen unless I was willing to pay all cash as only Dr. Koupaie takes insurance. Can you believe that? And also fyi per the California state medical board Dr. Koupaie has an official reprimand for unprofessional behavior and was disciplined for his arrest and conviction for making a criminal threat. If you want to be taken care of by unethical, lying physicians, this is the place for you! read more

I've been seeing Dr. Marjon since she was at Island Dermatology and could not be happier about following her to her own practice. Dr. Marjon is a terrific doctor who puts her patients first. She is knowledgeable and skilled and has a wonderful demeanor: kind, attentive, and accommodating. I would never recommend this office. They charge a $100 cancellation fee for appointments canceled within 24 hours and require a credit card to be kept on file so they can charge you if you cannot pay your deductible or other medical fees. They refused to accept my debit card, stating it was because there might not be enough funds to cover their fees. This practice appears to be driven entirely by money rather than patient care. Their policies show a complete lack of kindness, empathy, and basic compassion for patients, especially those facing emergencies or financial hardship. The level of greed reflected in these policies is frankly disturbing. read more
