I have been here many times now with my husband. The food is delicious and cooked well and the presentation is unique and special. I love that the chef always gives you an amuse bouche before you even order. See my pictures for meals and descriptions. They have a small wine list but I like that it features wine from three local wineries in Warwick (one is brand new). This restaurant is a little hidden gem in an old house built in 1760 and it is so neat to be able to sit in the different rooms of the house! We did a curbside pickup order from here on 10/23. It was the first time I've ever been here and I have to say the service was amazing! We called in our order and they asked what time we'd like to pick it up, and they brought it right out to the car. The food was all very good as well but if I have to make one critique it's that the pumpkin fritters were more like pumpkin pancakes, still delicious, but not what I was expecting. We also ordered the one vegetarian entree they had which was pasta with wild mushrooms and i spent 10 minutes trying to figure out if they had accidentally given me chicken instead .. spoiler: they didn't, and i learned about chicken of the woods that night Lovely experience, I hope next time we can go inside! read more

Came here for my anniversary dinner with my boyfriend. We chose the seven course tasting menu with the wine pairing. We were so pleased. The stand out courses were definitely the mushroom soup (which was served with a truffle cream custard) and the scallops with capers and seafood foam. Both were incredibly well done and packed with flavor. Each of the wine pairings were perfectly chosen. Never any dissonant notes between the flavors of the food and the wine. The surprise for me was the Riesling that was paired with the scallops. I typically don't drink sweeter wines but it was so on the nose for the dish and both me and my boyfriend couldn't have been more pleased. The ambiance of the restaurant was stellar. We sat right by the fire place and our waitress was very attentive. Would love to come back to see the tap room. We will definitely be coming back and strongly recommend this to others. My wife and I were here seven years ago when we rode the motorcycle up from NJ. Seven years later still riding the bike and we still love the place. Both times We ate in the basement pub with the low ceiling and the huge fireplace and the light smell of smoke from years of big fires. It's easy to picture yourself back when this place served people on real horses and not ones with two wheels. While the room and environment is worth the trip, the food is even better. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by the head chef and our server and seated in a beautifully appointed parlor room. I chose the crispy pork belly for my appetizer and it was beyond good, it was amazing!! My dinner was the Labelle duck breast and I can honestly say it was the best I ever had. Their wine list is perfectly suited for the area and not pretentious at all. The menu is seasonal and well appointed with locally sourced ingredients. The chef is a wizard with flavors!! For dessert I highly recommend the crepe brûlée trio!! This has to be one of my top 5 restaurants in the area. Set in a 1700s home. The decor is very cozy and welcoming. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming. The food, oh boy the food. Farm to table fresh. I mean I can't say enough about how fresh and good the food is. Small Desert menu. Prices are ok. We have eaten here quite a few times and never had a bad experience. We stopped in to have brunch on a Sunday at this charming restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was great. The staff was very attentive without hovering and were very accommodating. Everyone was beyond nice. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich and my husband ordered the chicken from the brunch menu. The grilled cheese was absolute perfection and my husband's chicken was delicious. We also got some bacon, hash and scrambled eggs as a side. Even something as simple as scrambled eggs were so good and fluffy we couldn't stop commenting on how good the food was. My son had pancakes which were the fluffiest pancakes I've had at a restaurant. They were so so good we kept stealing pieces of his pancakes off his plate. One of our favorite local restaurants in Warwick and we wanted to extend our gratitude and commend the Johansen family and staff. We are happy they are open during these unprecedented times...still serving up culinary gems. Even extending themselves for my wife who is a vegetarian; accommodating her special request with a delicious cous-cous with roasted vegetables (not on the menu). She raved about it...I've heard the burgers are fabulous, so perhaps I will make a special request next time. Had brunch today and super unimpressed all around. Started with a Bloody - very small and watery. Then moved to coffee - fine. Ordered the corned beef hash. Horrible. It was their "hash" with small dried out over cooked chunks of corned beef I suppose although didn't taste like it. The hash itself was 80% red peppers 20% mix of onion and potatoes. Very odd and not at all what one would expect from hash browns or corned beef hash. Wast NOT good. It was topped with poached eggs that were way over cooked to basically hard boiled. So dry I had to ask for hollandaise sauce on the side. Note that the eggs Benedict was essentially the same but came with the English muffin at least. I also tried my wife's sausage which was crazy and horrifically sweet. I also tried her pancakes which were flavorless. The staff was friendly and attentive earning the second star because otherwise with the bad food, limited menu and dirty old building this place sucks. Came here for dinner and sat in the tap room. Service was great 5 stars the food I would give it 0 Stars if i could. I'm not a chef and don't cook but i could've made better food. My husband ordered the ny strip all you could taste was how salty it was, you couldn't taste any of the strip, the potatoes were even worse just a mouth full of salt. I got the duck which was very chewy, the best part of that dish was the veggies and cream. Parents ordered the blackened catfish to share they said it tasted like charcoal and the mash was super salty. It had ham in it but it seemed like they added additional salt. The only explanation I can see for anyone giving this place a bad review is that I suppose every restaurant has its off nights. The IFI is a beautiful, delicious restaurant - my all-time favorite - and the food, service, and atmosphere are all top notch. Drive up route 17A, the main route up Mt. Peter connecting Route 17 with Route 94, and drive down a well-populated residential side street. (In other words, not "the middle of nowhere". Maybe it is for NYC folks, but these are the same people who would call Warwick "Upstate".). Towards the end of the road you will find this charming little converted 18th century home. Step up onto their cozy rustic covered porch, smell the scented candles and admire the antiques before you come into the reception and bar area. The owners are at the hostess desk and behind the bar and they will greet you and seat you with a smile. You might be seated in a cozy room by the fireplace or in a glass-enclosed porch allowing you to view the beautiful sights outside. Everything is beautifully decorated with antiques and artwork done by the owner. Once you are seated your pleasant and accommodating waitstaff will secure you with menus, wine lists, drinks, and a complimentary amuse bouche. Peruse the wine and specialty cocktail list while you enjoy a warm roll and whipped butter. Once you order your appetizer you will get a feel for just how creative this menu is. Try a warm tomato-mushroom ragout with cool truffle custard. Try anything with gnocchi. The chef has an affinity for dumplings and there are many forms of them throughout the menu. Have one of the creative soups of the day. Entrees are hearty, creative, and beautifully presented. The chef will surprise you with some of his interesting uses of sauces and spices (imagine 5 spice mole or vanilla infused ratatouille). The chef uses many locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. Desserts are made from interesting twists on the classics like a rainbow of creme brûlée flavors, bread puddings with season fruits, or unique cheesecake. The chocolate plate is a must for chocolate lovers, but don't miss the banana dessert either. Ice cream is supplied by the nearby Bellvale Creamery, where the delicious homemade ice cream ingredients are sourced from its own dairy farm. If this place is so great, why only four stars? It's only because after all the years I have been coming here for special occasions, I am not always surprised by them. It used to be that every time I came here it was a different menu. The basics would still be the same (short ribs, pork chops, salmon) but the style and the sides were always different. The last time I ate there was the first time I saw a different preparation for the short ribs in a year or two. I also waited a long time to see any noticeable changes in the appetizers. The menu used to change more with the seasons than it does now. I encourage anyone and everyone to try this place for a delicious, friendly, and comforting experience. I am just docking the one star to remind the chef to stay on his toes and keep doing that innovation and keeping up that creativity that truly places the IFI above all other restaurants. read more

My husband, Mother, and I came here for Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday. I hadn't eaten upstairs in quite some time and was excited to return. We originally had reservations at a chain restaurant but decided on a whim to go to Iron Forge instead. We made the right choice. Breakfast was unreal. And on top of that a 3 course meal for $29 per person? Even better. My mother and I both started with the fresh fruits while the husband had Crab. Both were delicious. The fruits were not quite at their peak, but it was refreshing none the less. For breakfast, Mom and I both had the Egg Fritatta. It was made with swiss chard, lemon oil, sweet onions, and parmesan cheese. HEAVEN. The fritatta was more of a crepe and the perfect size. It was light, airy, and full of flavor. For dessert, I had the chocolate plate while my Mom had ice cream and the hubs and cheesecake. The chocolate plate - every PMSing girls dream come true. Chocolate ganache on top of a fresh made chocolate cookie with chocolate bread pudding. The sizes were perfect. The cheesecake - light, flavorful, and the honey drizzle was a PERFECT compliment. They made theirs with ricotta. SO GOOD. It didn't drop in your gut like a lead ball. The ice cream was from Bellvale Creamery which is a separate review in and of itself. Made a reservation here a couple weeks in advance of a surprise weekend getaway to Warwick with my boyfriend. When I called, I asked specifically if we could be put down to eat dinner outside in the outdoor dining area they advertise on their website. I was told we could absolutely sit outside and my reservation would be marked accordingly. Upon arriving for dinner, I mentioned to the hostess our request to sit outdoors and was promptly told "there's no chance of that happening, we have a wedding tonight". Disappointed, we were sat in a glass enclosed porch which seemed to carry the smell of cat urine and was pretty hot with little ventilation. After waiting about 10 minutes to be acknowledged by a waitress, we had decided to only have appetizer salads and go elsewhere for our main meal. Both the beet/fennel and the walnut/Gorgonzola salads were indeed tasty, but nothing to write home about. I was really looking forward to a pleasant evening over a luxurious dinner, but was very disappointed with the food. The service was excellent. From the moment we entered we were greeted with friendly staff who sat us immediately in spite of not having a reservation. The room was warm and amiable...the lighting at the perfect level for romance and relaxation. Our waiter...Ed...was friendly, knowledgeable, witty, and attentive. Good job Ed. Now...the food. I was really disappointed by the food. I can't find the menu online, else I would lay-out exactly what I ordered by name, but will continue with descriptions that should suffice. Overall...everything was bland and required salt for flavor. Presentation was impeccable, but flavor was anemic. I'm accustomed to dashing salt or pepper on different items, but everything my date and I ordered required too much to call the food anything except "bland". I ordered an onion soup with cheese-melted toast (a variation of French Onion Soup) that was (wait for it) bland and watery. I'm used to a hearty stock with this sort of soup, but was disappointed by more of a broth than a stock. For the entree I ordered a variant of surf n turf, with small steak medallions under scallops. The scallops were delicious and perfectly prepared with a crisp sear on the outside protecting a meaty, tender inside. Congratulations on the scallops. The steak, however, was underflavored and overcooked. I was surprised when Ed took my order without asking how I wanted the steak prepared, but when I saw the presentation, it made sense (given that they were the same size as the scallops). Presentation and creativity were both an A+, execution was a C. I'm not certain how to explain what I had for dessert. It was a couple of beignets with chocolate sauce accompanied by a (please forgive me for not accurately naming this) a heavy mousse atop a chocolate...hmmm...cookie? It was good. Presentation was awesome...but the flavor was lacking (for chocolate!) From the food to the room, this place is more about presentation than delivery on food. Surprisingly, even thought I have lived in Warwick for 23 years, I have only ate at the Iron Forge twice. Once about 8 years ago with a bunch of my girlfriends and second about a month ago with my parents and BF. Both times have been in the Tap Room, so I have never ate upstairs. Not sure how much different the upstairs is from the downstairs, but I was not that impressed. Everyone raves and raves, but I thought it was just average. Again, maybe it's because they ate upstairs. The pulled pork sandwich I shared with my boyfriend was extremely dry. Even my bf (who loves just about anything) wasn't that pleased. We also has the smashed potato with blue cheese. We were thinking it would be more like fries with blue cheese on top - we were wrong. It was literally a baked potato that was smashed with crumbed blue cheese on top. Again not that great or flavorful. The only thing that we really like was the gnocchi gratin. Even though I was not that happy with the Tap Room, I think I will try the upstairs to see if there is a difference. Hey - you never know. read more

We had our Thanksgiving Day dinner here. On previous occasions, our visits were pleasant, and although the food was average we returned for the ambience. But this dinner was a total disaster, food wise. My wife had the Root Veg. Risotto. The rice was not creamy, the veggies were crunchy, and everything was covered in some kind of white sauce. But it gets better! I had the turkey dinner. There were three moist pieces of white and dark meat each, over a bed of fine mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry chutney. The gravy was a poultry flavored sauce. As I was halfway through, I began to suspect that this was not a freshly roasted turkey. Indeed, it reminded me of something out of Stouffer's or Swanson's! I'll never prove it, but I'm convinced that it was a commercially prepared dinner that was heated up under a warming lamp. In conclusion, both meals sucked! My wife has declared that in spite of the country farm house ambience, we are never going back. I will add that the service was well trained. I left our young waitress a very generous tip because the dinners were not her fault. The chef, who I think is the son of the owners, is allegedly trained at the CIA. The menu read wonderfully, and when the plates arrived they had a lovely presentation. However the food did not stand up. It was fine at best. I was surprised that the Ragout of Roasted Tomatoes & Mushrooms was made with one (rather plain) variety mushroom. My entree, the surf & turf, was similar- looked beautiful but was dull. I can't even remember what my husband ordered. We ordered the salon and the NY strip steak. The Salmon was bland and flavorless. It was served with greasy risotto which was also bland. The NY strip was gray and tough. The server offered another item from the menu but we declined because by the time it came the first entree would be either cold or done. The table next to us ordered the same thing and did replace the steak with a burger which came out first rare. It was sent back and finally came out right but well after the other person was done eating. Maybe it was a bad night but when your paying close to 80 for 2 for drinks and a meal I expect it to at least taste good. And that was the bill without the steak on it. Nestled in the woods of Warwick, NY stands the Iron Forge Inn, located in a building, my girlfriend acutely noted, that is older than the good ol' US of A itself (circa 1760). The building structure practically talks (or complains, if you will) to you in creaks and groans as you tentatively approach it, walking through the gravel parking lot and ascending the sagging porch steps, but you'll find the atmosphere inside lovely, intimate and inviting. Each dining area is separate from the other (some with working fireplaces! ahh!), making you feel like you're in someone's awesome, cozy, old-ass home. So now that I've set the scene, and you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and you're seated comfortably at a fireside table ready and waiting for a bellini and a brunch menu, we can get down to business. As much as I wanted to love it here, I didn't. I LIKED it. I like liked it even (remember that episode of Wonder Years?), but couldn't bring myself to love it. Loved the atmosphere and the history without a doubt, but the overall experience was just good, not great. First, the good stuff: -the coffee -the mimosas -the pancakes -the portion sizes (normally brunch makes me feel like this: O. Did you get that? I like to TRY and look like this: 8. Or this: I. Never this: O) -truffle infused brie grilled cheese. WHAT. -le service -food presentation And now, the bad: -no peach bellinis, only apple -"it's onion country up here" (thanks for that fun fact, Ma!) so there's onions in some variation in like, oh, just practically every single thing on the menu -YIKE$! thank goodness someone else was paying -Out of all the dishes I tried I found most of them to be pretty under seasoned. I was underwhelmed in general with the food, and that's the whole point, isn't it? The Tap Room was a warm lovely room with a nice menu, but as I was having a special weekend away with my guy, up to the main dining room(s) we went. I love these old houses divided up into discreet dining rooms. Creaky wood floors, tea lights in old tea cups, just charming and warm. The food was ridiculous, it was so good. I had a short rib with an onion bread pudding, presented as beautifully as any NYC restaurant, and I didn't need the knife I was brought. It was so tender and flavorful, my fork went straight through it. My boyfriend had a pork shank that was juicy and perfect, served with a pan fried slice of apple. Service was very good. Appetizers and dessert also good (yummy homemade cheesecake with a polenta crust... oy!) The wine list was only so so, however, and the house pinot the most forgettable wine of a winey weekend on the Shawangunk Wine Trail. Drive slow coming here at night. You could miss it and find yourself halfway back to New York City. read more

What a delight to dine here. This quaint and historic place dates back to 1760 if one believes the number posted on the side of the structure. They started with an amuse bouche of creamy soft goat cheese and potatoe on a plate drizzled with local honey which worked extremely well on my insides. Four course prix fix was near excellent. Shaved fennel and beet salad: delicious , interesting, and no complaints. Second course was a soup with mushrooms and other very natural seeming ingredients which would have been perfect if not a pinch too salty. Third course short ribs which was cooked perfectly, had a lot of flavor, and NOT DRY as one recent reviewer lamented. For dessert I had the honey cheesecake which was fairly light and I rate it high on the delicious scale as I do for the rest of the meal. Other family members at the table also rated their dishes highly. We ordered a Cabernet from California which was good enough. Most of the wine selections were from very common vintners and therefore not very interesting. The service was extremely nice but unfortunately the busboy was too young to be on target with anticipations of what our needs were. I wished that they had the LBV Porto, but instead I drank the tawny which was so-so. All in all I would say the prices were in line with the quality and would recommend a visit. read more
