Lots of places to eat in Poway.  Looks like Ipo Bbq is the only independent Hawaiian restaurant.  I tried the beef short ribs.  Regular size order came with 3 ribs and 3 scoops of rice.  Rice was moist and had a mild flavor.  Ribs were tender and nicely marinated.  The quality of meat is higher than L & L which I found chewy but I prefer the flavor of Island Style Cafe's version. https://www.hungryones.com/2021/05/island-style-cafe-3/ I also tried the lychee slush.  Ice had bigger chunks than I prefer.  Sweet lychee flavor was kinda like lychee but different from eating fresh lychee. So far Ipo Bbq has my favorite Hawaiian food in Poway.

    Special BBQ Plate Combo

Ipo BBQ is amazing!! The portion sizes are GIANT so you are getting a big bang for your buck. The chef is so kind and will make sure that you are satisfied with your order. I got the #1 Special BBQ combo, the meat is sooo tender, soft and the taste is just perfect. The macaroni salad is also super tasty and the rice is cooked to perfection. I could not ask for more. The eating area is clean, bright and just comfortable. Definitely coming back for more!!

Chicken lumpia. Overcooked and too oily.

I had high hopes for this place. I ordered a beef teriyaki bowl and two chicken lumpia. The bowl was just ok with very little vegetables. I took it home and added more broccoli. The lumpia was over cooked and extremely oily. I ate one and threw the other away. Sorry. I won't be going back.

It's been about three years since I've eaten here and it tastes just as good. Located next to Winchell's with plenty of parking. I phoned in the order during lunch and it was ready when I got there. There was no barricades or separation inside. I was able to walk straight up to the counter where my food was already set aside. I paid with a credit card and she printed the receipt for me to sign and then left to the back. I signed, grabbed my food and left. The food was exceptional for fast Korean food. The bulgogi bowl was tasty and the Special Bbq Combo comes with bbq chicken, bulgogi, and short ribs. It comes with two ice cream scoop of rice and one scoop of Mac salad. This plate is worth it to sample all the meats and two scoop of rice is actually a lot. The spam musubi was a little more rice than I'm used to but it's still delicious.

You call these short ribs? Where is the meat??? And it's burned

This business should be ashamed of themselves for even serving this food to the customer. First time here and won't be back! Burned lumpia that looks like a burned egg roll and paid premium price for the short ribs that are as thin as 2 chopsticks is put together and one of them being burned. BBQ chicken dry and bland. Beef burned. The entire experience is a terrible one. I took back the food and asked for my refund, after driving over 30 min to get back to this place the cashier tells me since I ate some of the food she can't refund me what I paid and has to refund me a portion of what I paid. THIS PLACE IS A JOKE! Don't EAT HERE.

Idk how this place stays open....oh wait I do..the prices! Being born and raised in Hawai'i, I felt like I had to try this place....one and done. The man working the counter was VERY nice, the music was perfect (playing the radio station from Hawai'i), and the photos look like authentic "PLATE LUNCHES"...but that's about it... Ordered 2 plate lunches: 1 BBQ MIX PLATES $15.99-VERY dry meat, the beef looked like scraps trimmed from random meats, looked NOTHING LIKE TERI BEEF, the bbq chicken was SO dry you HAD to pour the teriyaki sauce on it, "ribs"...were exactly that...ribs w/ almost next to no meat-rice was rice..average..the mac salad...don't bother to eat it, not worth the calories, SO NOT A LOCAL MAC SALAD! 1 CHIX COMBO-$13.99-Bbq Chix VERY DRY-just like the other plate, you HAD to pour the teri sauce on it to get flavor- CHIX KATSU--Absolutely the WORST KATSU EVER..took 2 bites and threw the rest out! I'm sad to be writing this review as the man working was VERY nice, but nice doesn't replace the $35 I paid for food that was very poor. Don't think we will ever be back =(

Ok. Looks ghetto as hell. But the food makes up for it 100%. The musubi was good. The food had enough char. The food portions were heavy. The meat was moist. Flavorful. Just happy. Thats it. The flavors were happy. Jus dancing together. You have flavors that dance together?? I will be back. Honestly, give the place a shot. Do. Not. Judge. A. Book. By. It's. Cover. Solid place. I will see you again.

I've ordered the Reg bbq short ribs which was almost $20 and there was barely 3 pieces of meat in there.! Also as soon as I entered the restaurant the person who took my order told me the wait time is about 40 min and made it seem like he doesn't want me to order due to being super busy but after I placed the order he said it'll be ready in 15 min...!

He had been there when he was younger, and I had been once before with my dad, so we were really looking forward to finally going together. Unfortunately, almost everything about the experience was frustrating. When we ordered, we specifically asked the employee whether two sides came with the entrees. We were told yes. Based on that information, we each selected two sides. My husband ultimately only wanted one side, so we clarified that he would just get an extra portion of the one he wanted instead. We also clearly explained our sauce preferences. I wanted mine on the side, while my husband specifically wanted his sauce cooked onto his burger. We repeated this because it was important to us. When we saw the receipt, we realized we had been charged separately for all of the sides. Our total was nearly $70 for two people who ordered burgers, a soda, and a beer. Had we been told from the beginning that the sides were not included, we absolutely would not have ordered them. My husband went back to ask about the charge and was told that the sides did not come with those particular entrees. That directly contradicted what we had been told when ordering. Unfortunately, things got even worse when our food came out. Both burgers were cold, my burger was a double when I had specifically ordered a single, and both sauces were put on the side despite us clearly explaining our preferences. My husband didn't receive his burger the way he had specifically requested either. At that point, we hadn't even taken a bite. We brought everything back to the manager and explained what had happened. I do want to make one thing VERY clear: Kristen, the manager, was absolutely wonderful. She was by far the best part of this entire experience. She was incredibly kind, understanding, professional, and genuinely tried to make the situation right. She offered to remake the food and worked with us on the refund. We ultimately decided we didn't want the food anymore after everything that had happened and just wanted to leave. Kristen handled that respectfully and did everything she could to help us. Unfortunately, the problems didn't end when we left. We were told the refund would take 3-5 business days. When the refund finally came through, it was approximately $15 short of what we were supposed to receive. We then had to call the restaurant again to get the issue resolved. We were also still charged the tip, despite the fact that we had received a full refund for the food. The restaurant then had to take the money again, process another refund, and essentially redo the transaction, which meant an even longer wait for our money. At this point, what should have been a fun dinner that we drove nearly an hour for turned into an incredibly frustrating experience involving multiple billing issues, incorrect food, cold food, and several phone calls just to get the refund corrected. The only reason I am giving any credit at all is because of Kristen. She was genuinely amazing and I don't think this review reflects her management at all. She was the one person who made an otherwise terrible experience slightly better. Unfortunately, because of everything that happened before and after dealing with her, we will not be returning. If you're going to charge these prices, the ordering process, food, and billing need to be significantly more accurate and consistent.

I was honestly shocked by how many menu items were included. Needless to say... we ordered way more than we probably should have. We started with the appetizers, and every single one was a hit. The Spicy Tuna Volcano had an awesome contrast between the crispy rice and the spicy tuna. The Spicy Addicting Cucumber lived up to its name and definitely didn't hold back on the spice. The Cheese Corn Butter is a classic comfort dish that never disappoints. But the real MVP of the appetizer round? The Yuzu Shishito Peppers. That bright citrusy yuzu sauce was incredible. It was so good that I started dipping everything else into it. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right. Then came the grill. The Toro Beef was a great way to start, with just the right amount of marbling. The Umakara Ribeye completely stole the show. Perfect cut, perfectly marinated, and easily my favorite bite of the night. We finished with the Filet Mignon, which was thick, tender, and a great way to wrap up the meat selections. The Sanchu lettuce wraps added a fresh crunch that balanced all the rich flavors, and I have to give a special shout-out to the Spicy Umami Mushroom Medley. I don't even know how to describe it... just order it. Trust me. Then dessert somehow managed to top an already amazing meal. The Boba Mochi absolutely blew my mind. I'd never had it before, and biting into mochi to discover ice cream filled with little boba pearls was one of the coolest dessert surprises I've had in a while. The Matcha Mochi was another winner and a perfect classic finish. This place instantly earned a spot on my list of favorites. The quality and service were excellent, and the food was every bit as delicious as I remembered. I also think the pricing is absolutely on the money for the quality you're getting. It's definitely more of a hole-in-the-wall type of place - the experience is really about the food, and I think the whole cook-it-yourself BBQ concept makes for great conversation with friends. I think the location works out perfectly. That said, the last time I came, I was actually dining alone before doing some shopping at the nearby Trader Joe's, and I absolutely enjoyed the experience by myself. I generally love to cook, though, so perhaps that's the key! I had the beef tongue, garlic shrimp, beef sukiyaki, and kalbi steak. Everything was fantastic. Highly recommend!
