My boyfriend, his family, and I booked a half-day with this charter in July. We were up in Duluth…read morefor a "mini-vacation". And when my boyfriend is involved, a vacation = fishing, fish, and fishing. We booked a week in advance on their website. Prices probably vary, but it was $520 total for 5 people to fish their hearts out from 6:30-11:30am. Fishing licenses are available for purchase, otherwise don't be a dope and just dress warm and comfortably, and bring a cooler for your catches too. Everything else was included. We could have brought beer onboard, but I've never drank beer that early in the morning... since 2010. Great Chinook Salmon bounty was advertised on their site, which we wanted real bad, but were disappointed to learn they were not "in season" until August. Oh well, lake trout will do. The charter was understaffed, but we managed (I took the wheel while the captain hooked up the lines muwahaha!). Our captain did a great job setting up tons of trolling lines, and an even better job at making sure all of them weren't tangled. He was pretty funny and wicked informative too. We caught half a dozen big lake trout. Our captain cleaned and bagged our goodies on the dock. That trout was sooooo good on the grill later that night oh lord. Especially with some cold beer.

It was gone before I grabbed the rod but the captain scolded me like a child for setting the hook. I couldn't believe how rude he was! These guys are just clueless, randomaly trolling around and hoping for a few small fish. Their catch rates are so bad that every fish is like life or death for them, just so they can post the pictures of people with thier tiny little fish on the Green Eyes board for adversting. I understand that trolling lures with speed and line that doesn't stretch calls for some different tactics, but what they were tellling us was just stupid beyond reason. They demand that you just hold the rod tip high and reel slowly to fight a fish. While doing that, keeping pressure on the fish requires you to do it with the reel. You have to reel faster to keep the rod bent, rather than using the rod to pull, and reel down. If you don't do everything exactly as they demand they get furious and start belittling you. Honestly, they don't know that they're talking about either. They were pushing pure fishing ignorance like the gestapo. They also wanted all the lines set to the same distance, so if you reel a fish up on an outside line it gets tangled with the inside line, then they blame you for reeling it too fast, which by thier methods, is the only way to keep pressure on the fish! Just unbeleivable! There is no catch and release on this boat either. They need every fish they can get on that Green Eyes board for thier pathetic adversting. I just can't say enough bad things about this crew and charter. Go somewhere else. Literally anywhere else. This is the worst charter on Lake Superior, bar none.

Super easy to set up, however to get spots along the lake, you need a reservation scheduled at least 1 week in advance. 2-3 vault toilets for both male and female and no shower. They have a fire pit and most have picnic tables at each spot. Definitely recommend bringing your own wood, toilet paper, wipes, and hand sanitizer in case the site manager isn't around.

In MN, reservable campingsites fill up fast, sometimes a year in advance so when we looked, everything was booked. Luckily, there are many campgrounds in the state that are walk-in or first-come-first-serve only. We chanced it and drove up north 4 hrs from the Twin Cities on a late Friday morning. When we arrived, all the lake-view campsites were taken but there were plenty of other drive-up sites available. We picked campsite #8 since it was one of the more spacious ones. It also felt far enough away from others and was a decent ways from the toilets (which I learned the hard way you shouldn't be too close to). The toilets are just like an outhouse but they were clean and included TP & hand sanitizer which was nice. The campgrounds have a boat access area to the lake with a dock that made for a good star-gazing spot. We walked over here at about 11pm and saw a brilliant night sky with layers of stars and the Milky Way was visible. I'm just sorry that I can't share any photos of the night sky to prove it. Believe me, I tried but my iPhone looks like I took a picture of a black rectangle -__- OVERALL TIPS: - This campground is located in Superior National Forest and has a small hiking trail near the campsites to check out. It's ok, but I recommend spending most of your time exploring the nearby George H Crosby Manitou State Park for more exciting and varied hiking paths. - Bring cash & small bills! You'll need the cash to pay for your campsite using small envelopes available when you enter. There's no onsite staff & unless you're ok writing down your credit card info or paying over the amount, bring plenty of $5 dollar bills and $1s. You'll want cash for the state park fees as well. - Get here as early as you can to get the best campsites. Look at all the empty ones before settling. I wanted to jump on the first open one I saw, and when I kept looking, they got better and better. There were still open sites at 11pm on the weekend after Fourth of July so shouldn't be too hard to find one. - Don't count on wood to be available. They were all our of wood bundles to purchase on-site. We had to drive back in town a ways to purchase wood for $7 at a gas station. - Drive a car you don't mind getting dirty. There are only dirt roads near here. It kicks up a lot of dust & makes for one bumpy ride. - Try to time your visit when there isn't a moon & you'll be able to see amazing layers of stars. - Remember to be a good camper & leave the campsite as-good if not better than you found it! Each campsite has a picnic table & firepit. We lucked out with the previous folks leaving a bunch of kindling for us & the firepit was nice and clean with no garbage in it like I've seen at other campgrounds. I was pleasantly surprised by Ninemile Lake campgrounds! It made me a believer in the goodness of impromptu trips. Overall, I loved the huge pine trees, how quiet & dark it got at night, & folks were pretty friendly. We were the only POC campers though. I'd definitely recommend staying here, as long as you're ok not having showers and flush-toilets. It's pretty rustic but doesn't "roughing it" make it more exciting?! -Says the person with a queen-size air mattress in her tent, wuhaha :)

As a fisherman let me say this first, they call it fishing for a reason. If you always caught fish,…read morethey would call it catching. I have fished with some of the best fisherman in the world and they don't even catch em all the time. That being said, being a charter boat captain is not only about taking your clients fishing, there is a certain experience or service that people expect when they book a trip. Our trip with Captain Paul certainly met and exceeded my expectations. I had booked an appointment for my 11 year old nephew and I. My nephew really enjoys fishing and I thought this would be a fun experience. I have previously been on a few charters including one not so great trip that my brother likes to keep reminding me about. For the record I got seasick, it wasn't pretty. Anyhow we arrived at our scheduled time and were greeted by the captains of one of their boats. We were directed to Captain Paul's boat who was getting ready for our trip. It was an absolutely beautiful day. As we headed out it wasn't long before we started to set up our lines. I say we because Captain Paul had my nephew help him which was fun for him. We booked a half day drip with is about a 6 hour day. While the first few hours went by quickly with our conversations with Captain Paul, we didn't have any bites. We tried some different depths and different lures. It wasn't until we "fooled" the fish into thinking that we were not ready that the first trout hit a line. I woke up my nephew from his slumber and he reeled in his first trout. It wasn't too long after that we had another bite but lost that one. Before the end of the day we hooked into another trout that my nephew landed. We had fun on our ride back in and were pretty pleased with a couple of nice sized trout. Captain Paul cleaned our fish for us and as a nice bonus gave my nephew a t-shirt. As we drove home we had fun with movie lines from one of our favorite movies. "What's for dinner? Trout. What's fun lunch? Trout. What's for breakfast? Trout!" For those unsure of the movie, that would be the original Parent Trap. Great movie, better time with Captain Paul and Optimum Charters. Initially I thought this might be a one time experience for my nephew however we had so much fun I'm considering making this an annual trip!
