Be careful if you hire. They upcharged us twice after work got started (once for $1000 and once for $1400) for items that were addressed on the estimate. They were also the most expensive out of three companies considered. In response to Intown's reply: We did pay $600 more to fix the hidden trim work. We didn't feel it was right to pay an additional $1,000 for that and other items addressed in the estimate. As for changing the scope of the project, the recommended paint did not perform as described by Intown. We could not see our way clear to pay an additional $1,400 on a $14,000 job. I was sitting at my kitchen table for dinner with my family when I felt a drop of water hit my shoulder. At first, I assumed it was one of my daughters transforming her dinner into a projectile, but it turned out to be something much more concerning--a leaking skylight. I called my friend that had recently told me how happy he was with some work he had done at his house on a water damaged bedroom. He recommended Intown Craftsman and I called them that very night. I received a response the next morning, a phone call from Russ Melton. He assured me a member of the team would arrive soon with an estimate and even invited me to call him personally if I didn't hear from the team soon. There was no need, I received an email and a call later that day. Russ showed up the next day and provided an estimate for the project. While I had him there, I showed him some other issues with the house that had been on my "to-fix list" and he provided an estimate for those projects as well. The cost was exactly what I expected, and I gave him the go ahead to schedule workers ASAP. They came within a few days, even though it was all happening around the Thanksgiving holiday. Jose and another roofer (sorry, I didn't catch his name) showed up early for the appointment but waited out front until the appointed time. They were courteous, kind (even to my very excited dog), and had the problem fixed in no time. They even installed additional flashing to the second skylight (which hadn't yet started leaking) just as a precaution, free of charge. The office staff were just as kind and professional as the roofers. I worked with Deb Burris who helped me with billing and scheduling. The interface for billing was simple, the contracts and estimates were clear and easy to understand, and she was very knowledgeable and responsive over texts, emails and calls. I will certainly be calling them again soon for those other household projects. I recommend using them if you have any home improvement or repair needs. read more

Used Intown Craftsman to make repairs on our old deck and screen porch. They replaced several weak deck boards and made important safety improvements to the deck structure. They also repaired some old water damage in the ceiling of our screen porch. We have had two largish projects with them and while the first one was fine, the second one was dreadful. The interior painting looks good but was a narrowly avoided disaster when I found the painters removing living room art from the walls--the living room has hand painted art paper and wasn't supposed to be painted. Communication with the workers is very poor. Another part of the project was repair of a tile border. The replaced tiles all fell off within one month of the work. The paint used to restore our pool deck also began peeling off within a month. The people we dealt with were very nice before and during, but now they don't reply. I guess the quality of subcontractors is uneven and Intown doesn't seem to stand behind their work. read more

STAY AWAY! It was just an awful experience. You will notice there are not many new reviews on here, I think Russ has shifted to roof work. I could write a book about all of the stress that working with this company caused me and my wife. By the time we finished our project, I was the general contractor and I worked with the city for all of the final permitting and directly with subcontractors to pay them. Several of the subcontractors threatened liens against our house due to non-payment, and one pulled their permit with the city due to non-payment. I found that out after construction was complete and I was trying to get final permits done myself. Not one person that worked for Russ/Intown Craftsmen when we started, still worked for him by the time our project was done a year later. I think he had 3 different office managers, and his main contractor (Luke) quit halfway through the project and was not replaced. By the end no subcontractors would take his jobs, because he owed so many people money. Russ's voicemail was constantly full, to the point I had to come by his office to talk to him because he was unreachable. The reason I made that personal visit to his guitar store was that I learned that he told the roofing subcontractor to overcharge me to help cover the balance of what he was owed for another job. I was furious. Soon after I then found out that the original electricians, Bray Electrical, would not finish their work due to a "legal dispute with Intown Craftsmen". He quoted that the project would take 13 weeks, it literally took 14 months. There were many low points, but I knew we were in big trouble when our workers said they couldn't get approval to purchase $150 of materials at Home Depot to continue their work. At that point, I started to pay for materials directly instead of paying give Russ money to continue. I needed to be sure every dime I paid went to my project. He was obviously in financial trouble. I should have known we were in trouble from the beginning, after we gave him our deposit and secured permits, it took 2 months before he started work. Then once the first crew started, he pulled them for another job, and promised he had a "better crew" that was going to start soon. Then once that second crew started, one of the guys quit. Then for the next 8 months there were only two workers (they were great) at our house every day. He did pull them off occasionally, like the time he told me he gave all his staff Christmas-New Year off. Only to find out they were helping to build his new guitar shop during that time. I could go on and on, and I am sure Russ will have some sort of reply saying that I am a disgruntled customer. Just please take my advice and don't use him. My project ended up being a fantastic addition but it was because Christian and Pedro (the two main workers) did a great job, and I worked my *** off helping to get everything done. Russ also says he has a 5 year guarantee that he will come back and fix anything that is wrong with the project he worked on. I have a feeling that also makes a lot of people who might want to write bad reviews think twice. It's almost been a year since he did my project, and I just finally decided it's time to write this. InTown Craftsman just finished my "warranty" job. I put warranty I quoted because basically they have no almost fixed what they messed up. They had a deck job for me - just added stairs. The work began great. There were some delays and lack of communication but I figured they were busy. Then the work started and like I said was going fine. However once the initial pieces for the stairs were put in and the finishing work was in progress the guy who was working on the deck cut corners I. Every way and had to redo so much. They had extra posts so instead of continuing to space them evenly they spaced them closer together to use them all. The gate at the top of the stairs was and is still a bit crooked. Because it was so off in the beginning it wouldn't close so instead of rebuilding the gate he just started sanding down my existing post. Bad idea as I had them replace the post and fix the gate. Then to do this instead of removing the old post he cut the old post and screwed the new one on top. With I had them come fix. Everything was good enough. And then the complaints of how much the job was costing them. And I could not care less. If it was down right the first time it would take less time. Also the wood they used is crap. After dealing with Intown Craftsmen, I've reached the unavoidable conclusion they must be a front for a drug cartel. Why? Well, grab a seat, let me tell you. I was interviewing contractors for a water damage job in my house. Deborah, who answers the phone, explained to me how they do high quality work with high quality materials, how they are very expensive, probably out of my budget expensive, how my insurance company probably won't cover their cost. In spite of that, I persisted and asked that they send somebody to take a look. They took two extra weeks than the other companies to send somebody and Deborah asked if it's ok that the guy they're sending doesn't speak English (but he's their best guy). I figured if this works for them, I'll make it work. The guy was 10 min late, but he showed up, looked at what I showed him, took pictures and measurements, and left as mysterious as he came. I called Deborah later that day to get some feedback, she didn't know much, but she would ask a translator to ask him. When she called back later, she still didn't know much, so I started telling her about the job, at which she started asking me for pictures and measurements to see if they could even do it. I told her the guy had taken all the pictures and measurements in the morning, to which she responded he probably didn't understand anything and he took the pictures just to humor me. But he feels really bad that he doesn't understand, and she feels bad for him, so lay off him. But they are a high quality company in high demand who use high quality materials and take a long time to get to you, so you need to wait your turn. Also, they're very expensive, so you probably can't afford them and your insurance company won't cover their cost. We hired Intown Craftsman to do a mantle remodel for us. We live in a 100 year old bungalow that had an original mantle. The owner Russ was nice enough to point that out to us to ensure we weren't just going to get rid of it. So his team moved it to another room and began work on our beautiful new modern and functional mantle. Everyone from Deb in the office, to Luke who manages the crews to the awesome workers Chris and Billy, they were all a pleasure to work with and very professional. They took the time to make sure we knew all the options, matched paint, touched up where we asked without complaint and just overall had a great attitude. We sourced our own beam which took a couple of months so when it came in they quickly came over to finish the job and we are so happy with the final outcome. Russ and his team renovated our 1939 Brookwood Hills cottage during the summer of 2016 and did a wonderful job overall. We had just sold our larger home up the street and wanted to move back in to the cottage we loved so much. It had been a rental for six years and needed some updating. They helped us bring our last renovation done is 2005 all up to date and move in ready and on time. Projects included painting, new roof, kitchen update, closing in walls and more. It's been two years since the project and everything is looking terrific. We had some issues with the new roof recently but Intown came out and worked hard to get everything right (and they no longer work with that same roofing sub contractor). If you have a small repair or project, the secretary, Deborah, will tell you directly that they don't need your business and they only deal with high end clients, in high end zip codes...for high end work. Actions do speak louder than words and they will make you feel insignificant if you're not spending major dollars with them. Are they really so talented that they can treat customers shoddily for not living in the right zip code? Is the value of a dollar higher in 30342, 30306, or 30309? Are they really doing you a favor just showing up to give you an estimate and evaluate your property? Nope. The field is crowded in Atlanta so do your homework and thoroughly research contractors before choosing. Don't let their secretary make you feel bad because you're not spending $100K...or gets annoyed because you ask too many questions...or seems incredulous because you're upset the worker shows up late and then mysteriously leaves. They treat you that way not because they're the best but because they're just rude. Deborah needs a lesson in good communication and customer service skills. Lots of money and don't ask too many questions: good customer. Smaller project and you want to know what's going on with your house: you're a nuisance. read more
