We knew that this preschool would be the one for our little girl and we patiently opted to stay on the waitlist and turned down other schools until a spot opened up. The Director and teachers helped us with the difficult transition from a nanny to preschool for our 3 year old. The Director has extensive experience working with young children, gives great advice, and is always supportive - never judgmental. Our daughter has been at the school for 1.5 years. The teachers are caring, warm, and attentive. They have weekly learning themes and encourage creativity, kindness, and collaboration. Our daughter has flourished at the preschool and is demonstrating more self-confidence, and stronger social skills. She is already trying to read and write, and is interested in math, and solving puzzles - which we know comes from the encouragement of her teachers as we rarely have time to work with her at home. We also love the fact that the program includes Spanish, Mandarin, music, dance, kung fu, and art lessons. We also signed her up for additional enrichment classes including ballet, soccer, and hip hop which we are grateful to have through the preschool. The enrichment programs are convenient since they are offered during preschool hours at the gym.

One day I saw how a teacher treated another kid with a running nose: she was violent, demeaning to the child and blowed his nose really hard! After three months, my son's teacher quit and when I went to ask why I was told by the director that once teachers found "better jobs" they would often quit. I do not think she was bright enough to even realize what she was saying. I also started to be suspicious because in their daily report they always said that my son ate all his fruit. My son DOES NOT eat fruit, so I knew something was not right there. While my son was there (he was in the Butterfly room) he had 3 different teachers. The kids spent a large part of the day stuck in chairs and there was an awful smell of urine in the entrance. Last week I enrolled my son in the Key Institute and was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED! Upon entering we were immediately taken aback by the intense smell of DOG. My son's allergies immediately started acting up and after I left, she told him to stop sniffing. Prior to agreeing to enrollment, Ms. Royce told me that all of her assistants had Masters Degrees. She said she would teach my son study skills as well as work with him on his math which is why he was there! My eighth grade son was "tutored" by a tenth grade student who did NOTHING with him. She had my son pull up his math work from school (which were already completed and had the answers) on his phone and he redid the problems. When I picked him up I asked her what grade she was in and she told me. I asked her how my son did with math and she responded, "good; he knew everything I gave him". Ms. Royce gave my son some papers to read about study skills while she interrupted him and told him random stories and yelled at the other student who was there. There were NO materials there and Ms. Royce actually asked me to purchase same from Barnes and Nobles to give to her so that she can use them with my son. Ms. Royce consistently called me by my son's name and asked my son, "and what is your name?" She told me one price prior to us going and a second price once we were there and yet a third price when I opened my wallet to pay her. She did not come downstairs until one of her Assistants went to get her and prior to that we heard her loudly talking baby talk ( I assumed to her dog as she told me she had one upstairs). As she made her way downstairs where we were she continued in that way of talking as she closed the door and told the dog to "stay there now". Ms. Royce made inappropriate comments and remarks to my son ( who is African American). She told him that he shouldn't eat sugar because it's bad for his brain, but that he should eat watermelon. She chuckled immediately after she made this comment. She told him that he should read books and she mentioned " like books about Martin Luther King". When my son shared that he wants to have a baseball career but he wants to complete college first, she remarked, "Just as long as you don't kneel during the National Anthem". When I paid her, she said she would give me my change when I returned to pick up my son. She did not, nor did she even mention owing me change. I know that she has had a very good reputation in the past but I just think it's time for her to hand over the reins. She definitely appears to be senile. When I called her to advise her that my son would not be returning and why, she confirmed all that she said to my son but said, "so what? What's wrong with that?". She told me that her Assistants with Masters Degrees no longer worked there and one passed away. According to her, the tenth grader was "temporary" and she knows a Teacher in the Yorktown School District who she could ask to come to the institute to teach my son. Ms. Royce did not remember talking the baby talk nor did she remember that her Assistant had to go upstairs to get her to come downstairs. She was adamant that she did so on her own and just as adamant that she wasn't talking baby talk. Ms. Royce really needs to consider either closing up shop or turning The Key Institute into capable hands because hers no longer are!

The Children's Academy & Learning center has been such a breath of fresh air for our family. The center is inviting, filled with art projects the children do, different assortments of learning posters. They even teach the children about responsibility at a young age with a "Look who was awesome" sticker board! Anytime a child assists with something important (such as teacher's helper, ext. ) they get a sticker! The center is very clean, the staff takes great pride in it's cleanliness and it shows! The entire staff at TCA, including the owners to all the teachers, are such an amazing part as to why this center is the best! We are so happy we found this gem!

Our baby LOVES seeing the caretakers, and she basically shoos me away with a "bye-bye" so she can begin her day at school. The environment is always wonderful. It is located in an apartment space so it feels like a home, informal, welcoming, and calm, yet also very professional. There are two music classes a week, art work (today we were sent home with an adorable handprint snowflake), sensory activities, neighborhood walks, grocery shopping trips, and ample free play where the babies learn to socialize. All in all, I highly recommend this daycare. It's a hidden gem that all the moms in the neighborhood know, but sadly doesn't have as much social media presence that it deserves. The 1st issue was extremely poor communication. The teachers in the youngest group didn't speak English and it was difficult to communicate without a translator. Small babies can't communicate their own needs, so a parent should be able to. When I brought this up with management, they said the lead teacher did speak English - yeah, maybe 10 words. The poor communication goes beyond language. At the start I explained I was a young widow, my husband passed a few months prior, and expected them to communicate this to the teachers so they could be sensitive. It was obvious this did not happen. None the less, the teachers were kind and caring, so I stayed. But the disappointment continued. My daughter came home with BLEACH stains on her clothing on THREE separate occasions. I brought this up to management and was assured it would be addressed, it was not. I understand the need to use bleach to clean, but small children should not be around toxic chemicals! Clean when they are not around! This was troubling as my daughter is a thumb sucker and could have got bleach in her mouth. The 1st summer I sent her to school in sandals the whole summer with no issue. The children have to keep their shoes on all day, including nap time. My daughter came home with sweaty and smelly feet. When summer came, I knew it would be uncomfortable for her to be in closed toes shoes all day. I made sure to get sturdy sandals with a thick bottom and adequate edging to protect her feet. Mid-summer, the sandals were suddenly a liability issue (but bleach isn't?!). They are so hyper focused on rules, they've lost the warm human touch they once had. I got a call from the office manager, I explained my concerns and told her that if shoes could be removed during nap time, I would send her in closed shoes. She said she would look into it and let me know. Then Sandy herself called me. I found her to be extremely rude from the gecko. She spoke over me and had no empathy for the concerns I was expressing. It was clear that she wasn't interested in the human perspective, this is just a business to her. At this point I felt frustrated and unheard. I finally made the decision to remove my daughter and emailed them she would not be returning after the year end. I received no response, they didn't seem to care. On the last day the teacher gave my daughter a lovely goodbye package, it was nice to finally see some care from someone there. I emailed about my security deposit and got no response. A week or so later, I emailed again. Today Sandy called me and once again tried to bulldoze her way through the conversation. The financial agreement says we have to give 45 day notice. (Standard notice for a job is less than that, are you kidding me?) I explained that I didn't have 45 days because the school year ended. Had I come to this decision during the year, I would have obliged but what was I supposed to do? Again, she spoke over me and had zero empathy, she really did not care about my situation. This time I spoke to her the way she spoke to me, which is uncharacteristic of me, but I was tired of the bullying. They expect parents to keep to the 45 day notice when they don't keep to their end of the deal - ex since the pandemic, they're only open until 6 (apparently you can only catch COVID19 between 6 and 6:30pm), among other things. So, I am leaving with a bitter taste, my experience at Sandy's was disappointing from the start, and I wish I had left earlier instead of trying to give them more chances. I've never been one to write reviews online, but I felt like I had to this time. Ps. Due to character limit I could only share some of the many issues.
