Summary: I understand that auto shops need to mark up parts (on top of wholesale prices) to make a profit. The owner of the United Auto Shop said that 'they mark up parts by 35% over their cost'. After two verbal requests, I finally got (after I paid the invoice) the part numbers for the parts (supposedly) replaced. I looked up the retail prices and saw that they charged me over 2X retail price for identical, readily available parts ($2,800 for parts that I could buy at retail for $1,300). When I discovered this, I called to speak with the owner (Ryan). He said that he would not rebate me 'one red cent', which indicates to me that he's perfectly fine with gouging his customers well above his stated policy. I would think such (in my opinion, egregious) pricing practices were required to be disclosed to consumers and protected under Consumer Protection Regulations. BTW, they didn't complete the work correctly, so I will need to take the car to another shop to get it done right. Details: My car was leaking hydraulic fluid in the retractable roof area and into the vehicle. I had viewed a YouTube video showing the exact same symptoms on the same make / model of car but thought it better to take it to an auto shop to have it fixed instead of doing it myself. Mistake number one was taking my car to United Auto. When describing the issue to the shop manager, he said that he had experience with such problems and knew how to fix them. The manager called me with a rough estimate (not a quote, let alone a written quote) before they even diagnosed the issue, 'for about $5,000' if all of the entire cylinder systems needed to be replaced, which he said he doubted would be necessary. Still no quote. Another mistake on my part. Then he said something that should have been the biggest red flag. He offered to buy my car from me (presumably at a substantial discount) before the work was started. Based on my forty years of business experience, I would say that ethical businesspeople don't do that. But I said no thanks, and let it pass. Another mistake of mine - I should know better. I provided the YouTube video that showed the exact same issue for minimal cost and effort. The representative said that he reviewed the video thanked me and said that he shared it with the mechanic. After doing their work (which is still not complete), which took much longer than they estimated, they charged me over $5,600. Of course, their website states that they can levy a lien on your car if you don't pay in full. So, I did pay, given my experience with them up to this point, and then called the owner to discuss their, in my opinion, egregious charges for the parts (setting aside the extensive time charged me for the work). I requested a reasonable rebate just to adjust the parts pricing from over 2X retail versus what he said was only 35% over wholesale. His response: 'Not one red cent rebate'. I will never make the mistake again and allow United Auto to get near one of my vehicles ever again.

Now, I'm out a car and I had to purchase a new vehicle and they don't want to work with me at all or give me their insurance information so I can make a claim. My car was towed to a Hyundai dealership and they advised me that the drain plug was not put back on properly. When I called to discuss this with the owner, he told me that it made more sense that somebody came to my house and drained the oil out of my car than them to have made a mistake I'll be taking them to small claims court.

I wanted quality work done. Two weeks later, they came out, diagnosed my vehicle (five separate engine codes and an oil leak), and told me they'd pick the vehicle up the next day. They also told me that when the work was done they'd return it. They didn't pick it up the next day. In fact, it took them another 10 days before they came and got the vehicle. They worked on it that day and contacted me at the end of the day and asked if I'd like to come get it, because they couldn't bring it back that same day. I let them know that I couldn't drive out there and would like it returned as they said. I was promised it would be back the next day or the day after. Two days pass and no vehicle, so I contacted them and was informed "We don't return vehicles. We don't have time to do that. We usually don't pick them up either, or charge a fee for it, but we gave you that for free." So, I drove an hour to pick up my vehicle. On the way home, the check engine light came back on. Assuming it was just an issue with one of the sparkplugs (the technician who worked on my car told me it still had a very slight misfire), I went ahead and just brought it all the way home. Once there I hooked it up to my OBD reader and realized that FOUR of those five engine codes were still present. I spent $1,350 to have my wife's van repaired, and waited a MONTH. At the end of all that, they've eliminated ONE engine code, and for all I know it's still leaking oil. Absolute worst mechanic experience I've ever had in my life. I'd bring it back to make them fix it, but I don't trust them to not make it worse. Avoid AT ALL COSTS.

Both began tinkering with cars at a very young age. Emily the assistant there is just as humble as Howard and Brian. She is super friendly too. In my experience of taking my vehicle there when needed over the last 30+ years, they always finish the repairs on my car in an excellent timely manner. Prior to stalling, the truck had been jerking, sputtering during acceleration, and losing power while driving. After evaluating the truck, I was told the spark plugs needed to be replaced. I approved the repair and paid $509.19. I was then told the truck was fixed. Unfortunately, shortly after leaving, the exact same issue happened again. The truck began sputtering and completely died near Friendship Road and I985, creating a dangerous situation in traffic and resulting in another emergency tow that cost me an additional $300. I returned the truck and explained that the issue was still occurring. However, because the truck happened to start for them during testing, I was told they could not replicate the problem and did not know what was wrong. I specifically asked about fuel system concerns because the symptoms felt fuel related, but no diagnosis was made beyond the spark plugs. At that point, I no longer trusted the truck to be safe to drive and took it directly across the street to Christian Brothers Automotive Buford for a second opinion. Shortly after arriving there, the truck stalled again while they were attempting to move it into the service bay. Because the failure occurred while connected to diagnostics, they were able to pull active fault codes indicating issues with the fuel pump and fuel pump control module. I ultimately authorized approximately $2,000 in repairs for the actual problem. In retrospect, the spark plug replacement appears to have been more of a guess at the problem than an actual diagnosis, especially considering the symptoms remained exactly the same immediately afterward and the real issue turned out to be fuel system related. To be fair, intermittent mechanical issues can be difficult to diagnose, and the staff was polite throughout the process. However, I am disappointed that I spent over $500 on repairs that did not address the issue at all, followed by another breakdown and tow immediately after being told the vehicle was fixed. Given the safety risk involved with a vehicle stalling in traffic, I expected a more thorough diagnostic process before being told the truck was repaired.
