This place was decked top to bottom inside their stand alone building with faux Christmas trees, ornaments, garland and many more decorations. I purchased a few ornaments as gifts. I was really surprised how reasonably priced everything was! The staff were very friendly and attentive if you had any questions. I do want to note that dogs are not allowed inside this building with the breakable Christmas decor. They also have their own small parking lot that you can park in.

While browsing inside, I briefly approached a back room, immediately realized it appeared to be a private office area, and turned around. Even so, the woman running the shop called out to me in a noticeably alarmed tone, which felt surprising and unwelcoming. The overall atmosphere was not the relaxed, friendly experience I expected from a small local nursery. I left feeling more like I was being monitored than welcomed.

Potted plant prices are comparable to many other nurseries, and bulk seeds are much cheaper than other nurseries. The most memorable aspect of our long visit was Mr. O'Donnell himself--such an intriguing person with so much passion for what he does, and so much knowledge from decades spent making observations in the wild. He seemed delighted to teach about plants and the environment and to make suggestions for our garden. Looking forward to our next visit.

I spotted a garden employee, and he explained to me the reason why these plants looked a little distressed, but how once planted, there tubercular system would revive the plant with proper care! I was hesitant to buy, so he offered to look on Computer, if other Sloats in Marin would have Peruvian Lillie's - the answer was No! The next day I went back to Sloats, thanked Cameron for educating me on the Peruvian Lillies, and made my purchase - now in the ground in my garden! We have been customers at this location for the 5 years we have lived in our home. Unfortunately,…read moredue to a poorly handled customer service experience, we won't be able to support them any longer and will take our business to summer winds down the road. Their first main register is faulty and sometimes likes to freeze in the middle of a transaction (they know this but continue to use it) and then it double charges customers. This happened to us, and the employee even joked that she hoped we weren't double charged because it's been happening. (then why are you still using that register is beyond me) We were in fact, double charged and we brought the credit card statement along with the receipt back to Sloat, but they told us this was something we need to take up with our bank. We had then spent 45 minutes on the phone with the bank and the bank said we need to take it up with the business. (after all, it is the business's fault.) Sloat would not do a normal return for the duplicate transaction, and instead called a manager who was on speakerphone and was clearly annoyed to have to handle the situation. We were then contacted by a representative from their corporate office who said he can't process the return unless he has the credit card on hand, which would then force us to drive all the way down to Mill Valley to process this return. After negotiating with him and explaining we live in Novato and will not be traveling to Mill valley for this, he said well why don't you go back to the location and get a plant for the same price. That's not what we needed. This was a purchase made with a corporate credit card used to purchase a corporate gift and we needed the refund. (also, why on earth are they making this so difficult for us when all they have to do is a return for one of the transactions that was duplicated?!) after SO much time wasted and way too much back-and-forth he finally processed the return using the credit card numbers over the phone. We just really feel like Sloat could, and should do much better, and hopefully they can learn from this experience. But the sour taste is already in our mouth and we will not be going to Sloat any longer. So be careful purchasing at that first main register!!!

Great selection of items including flowers, trees, palms, succulents, herbs, potting mix. This isn't a Home Depot garden/wholesale, so be prepared for some steep prices. A one gallon pot size of a commonly seen succulent is around $15+. However, the plants at Las Baulines are well-nourished and happy unlike the shriveled half-dead ones you might find at a Home Depot. I wish the prices were more clearly marked (most of them didn't have any price signage on or near them). If you're willing to dish out a few more bucks, I recommend stopping by here.

Do you like butterflies? I am sure you do. I know I do!  We grew up with butterflies. Maybe our kids will miss out....Beyond being spectacular, butterflies are major pollinators of fruits and flowers, and things we rely on and what we like to eat: thing of every flower you hold dear. On behalf of neighborhood elementary school kids who took a field trip to visit this nursery to make a request, and the owner disregarded this: to just appreciate our predicament to ask the owner of Las Baulinas Nurser not to sell tropical Milkweed, or milkweed in this coastal community. School children ask: Please help ensure pollinators survive and DON'T SELL MILKWEED in Coastal Communities. Milkweed grown near the coast disrupts the Monarch Butterflies migration and ability to survive- as a species. Why? I did buy her milkweed, after the owner assured me it was the native kind, (not tropical), handing me a pamphlet, only to find out later it was the wrong type, derails the Monarchs flight patterns, our butterflies are dying in droves. Butterflies need us to care enough and care more! The problem: b/c well meaning people think if we are planting milkweed close to the coast we are doing good right? Come to find out butterflies are not leaving for hotter climates so ultimately the milk weed disrupts their migration and they don't survive when they winter here. The local Bay Area Community have been reaching out to Las Baulinas to ask them to be more sensitive, to not just appear to care about butterflies!  But not sell milkweed- which disrupts the Monarch's migration, Las Baulinas poses as a permaculture friendly place, when I asked if I was buying tropical or native milkweed the owner said it was native, and instead I learned later it was tropicl milkweed. I always liked visiting here from up North, but I am disappointed as they are not fully aware how this practice contributes to the dwindling numbers of local butterflies. Please consider if you do shop here to mention this, and ask her to protect local butterflies like Monarchs, b/c you can make a difference, as they continue to sell this in this coastal community- even after asked!  The kids from the local school visited this place to make it clear to the owner and how important Monarch butterflies are- and we need to respect their habitat. When I asked if the milkweed was the kind that wasn't tropical they assured me that it was the right kind, Mistake One: IT was TROPICAL and not the wild kind. Mistake Two: We are disrupting the butterflies natural habitat, chance of survival and feeding patterns and cycle by planting this close to the coast. Do not squander the opportunity to make your voice heard. Longevity for our kids, our communities: Day to Day we must face this, be conscious, how we must share nature and not be careless and trample on these little creatures only refuge and home.
