There are no roads between the two islands so you need to take a ferry to and from the airport. Once landing, you need to take the Ketchikan Airport Ferry. Fare is $6 one-way for adults and the ferry ride takes about 15 minutes. The ferry leaves the airport at the top and bottom of the hour, while the ferry leaves town at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour. There is no payment counter on the town side. You pay at the airport after exiting the ferry boat if coming from town. The ferry boat is on the smaller side. There isn't a lot of room to sit if it is full. Given that the ride across the water is short, that is totally fine. The ferry terminal on the city side is a couple of miles north of the center of the city, so you will want to factor that into your arrival plans and when you are taking the ferry back to the airport. I would recommend leaving for the airport early since you are dependent on the ferry to reach it.

It's keystrokes people but AMH has a monopoly -unfortunately. I'm gobbsmacked at this change fee. It's to their advantage to put us on an earlier ferry since we are tourists and free up afternoon space for locals but they would not budge. It's a cold cruel world at AMH in times of super inflation. Sadly!

We started off with Jay who was so kind and compassionate about our situation and gave us helpful tips regarding our stay. We then met Zach on our next trip to the hospital and he was just as kind. But then we met Cheri-what a gem you have in her! When our family member was finally released she did everything she could to help us get what we needed done so we could get to the airport to make a flight to Seattle. I won't go into step by step of what she did for us but she made a very stressful situation feel easy, was very engaging which made our family member very relaxed and had solutions for anything that came up. The boat was clean and spacious--there's nothing worse than being on a boat that is packed to the gills with people--with two levels to enjoy and outside areas as well, including a third level that was opened when the boat was not in motion. Everyone was friendly and the snack and drink options were plentiful and for the most part, affordable. Given the captive audience, I appreciated that they weren't outright gouging us during our journey. They also offered up some free items as well, which was also quite unexpected. Crew interacted well with the passengers, asking them how their cruise has been and where they were from. The collection of glacier ice to be used in the making of drinks at no additional cost was a nice touch, even giving the kids cups of glacier ice without a charge was something you rarely see in this day and age! There were some things that could be improved, though: - The captain scolding the crew over the public address system was unnecessary. Apparently the other boat forgot their net and we needed to pass it over to them but the crew was busy helping passengers and didn't want to make the lines longer by going to fetch the net and pass it over. Confident that this could have been handled better. - The free donut holes were awful. Like puffs of stale bread that sat next to sugar, hoping the wind would blow some sweetness onto them. I know, it's free, but still something that should not have been served. - Hearing a crew member awkwardly navigate the tipping section of the credit card machine literally 50 times the exact same way. Saying, "You can just hit skip. If I do it, I'll get talked to about it." There are so many other ways to handle this that don't come across like she's going to be beaten at the end of the cruise.

Easily located our guide after getting off the cruise ship and was quickly escorted to the speed boat. The speed boat ride was a quick 10 mins and we arrived shortly to Matt's boat to board our kayaks. Our guide was very informative and shared useful information on the wild life that we saw. She actively sought out starfishes, jellies and urchins for us to see up close and feel. We even saw a bald eagle-the only one during our entire cruise actually. It was a magical experience and well worth the money. Hands down the best part was the service and the people that helped us. Gave us great hospitality and recommendations not only for Ketchikan but other cruise ports we were visiting for our trip. Highly would recommend booking this excursion!
