We had amazing time in Ketchikan. We only had few hours so we decided to do flight above Misty Fjords. That was lifetime experience and we had amazing time. We paid $250 per person but later Royal Caribbean was selling same tour for $520 per person so be careful dont let them fool you. Tour was arranged and we were picked by bus from Ward Cove so make sure if you book directly with your cruise line to be where they tell you for the pick up. On the way back our bus was 30 minutes late... Great flight, pilot, water landing we even saw our cruise ship from the above. Well worth the cost. We got lucky with the weather and it was all clear and sunny but we were passing rain clouds and we even got some little rain. Amazing

    Ready to take flight!

While in Ketchikan, we had an excursion to do a flight-seeing adventure to the Misty Fjords. So glad we did this and the views were absolutely beautiful! We had a late afternoon flight so the weather cleared up a bit and the sun was out and it was pretty clear. Taquan Air will arrange pickup from the port and downtown area, it was like a 10 min ride, when we got there, the staff was friendly in greeting us and taking attendance etc. We did a little pre-flight briefing and they will split up the entire group into smaller groups but they won't separate your own party. They will ask you how much you weigh too to make sure weight distribution is legit before flying. So don't be shy telling them how much you weigh, I added 5 more pounds to my weight because I hit the dessert bar like a savage that week. Luckily we got paired in a smaller group with a lovely family from Germany. The flight is about 30 mins out to the fjord, you hang out for about 15 mins on a barge they built in the middle of the fjord and 30 min flight back. The views were amazing! Our pilot, (I believe his name was Ed), was really cool, had a cool music playlist you listen to with the earphones you put on when flying, he did his best to fly around some mountains for us to see if there was any mountain goats that he saw earlier in the day, he was very informative with the area where we were flying to, while at the fjord he will help take photos of your group, super friendly pilot and glad he was assigned to us. We had a great time, definitely would recommend using them as a flight-seeing excursion. Pro tip: Be sure to use the bathroom before you take flight.

Absolutely breathtaking sites! Definitely a must do in Ketchikan! Smooth ride and very friendly Pilot.

What a great experience! This was something my husband and I knew we wanted to do while we were in Alaska as part of our cruise. We booked this in advance and were looking forward to the day. Fortunately we had beautiful weather, sunny and mild winds and were able to fly with no issues. The Cessna planes are small - holding only about 4-6 people and we flew in a group of only 5 (4 passengers and the pilot) so that was fabulous. Our pilot was a friendly younger guy who said he had moved to Alaska to be able to fly planes and he also delivered mail and packages on the plane when not doing the day trips through the Misty Fjords Monument/Park. I admit, I am scared of flying in general and always freak out on large planes. So this was something I wanted to do but also didn't - I was scared. We had smooth, easy landings and a great pilot. It was so cool and the views were gorgeous. We did a water landing and were able to get out and walk around on the outside of the plane in the middle of the Fjords for some gorgeous pics. I did get sick - I'm a wuss. So be warned.... if you get motion sickness or car sick at all - maybe take some dramamine before you go and be prepared to breathe deep by the end. Highly recommend and this is a great operation - everyone was efficient and friendly! It was our favorite part of our trip!

One of our favorite excursions from our cruise! This was a dream of my boyfriend's and I was happy to come along for the ride. Our pilot was excellent and full of information. It was incredible that the views we were able to see were untouched by humans, and there are no words to describe the variety of feelings that were experienced. It was around a two hour excursion, with plenty of opportunities for photos. My boyfriend even got the chance to ride in the cockpit, which made him so happy! I loved the pilot's playlist that played in our headphones while we took in the sites. It was definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that you have to take while you are in Ketchikan.

Ketchikan was one of the stops on a Princess cruise to Alaska we took with our son and his family. Since we had visited on a previous cruise, we thought we would relax and stay aboard the ship. But I couldn't resist disembarking the ship to check out things in the immediate area. I noticed a number of booths on the dock that were offering float plane tours. I talked with several to get a feel for what was available as well as pricing. I was most impressed by the Taquan Air representatives because they were much less hard sell and took time to explain different options for flights. Luckily, our cell phones worked and I called my wife back on the ship to test her interest. As a licensed pilot herself I thought it would be an easy sell, and it was; we were going flying! We decided on the 90 minute flight to the Misty Fjords. It included transportation from the ship to Taquan Air, a safety briefing, the flight that included a landing in the Misty Fjords, return to Taquan Air, and transport back to the ship; a total of about two hours. We saw beautiful scenery that you would only see from the air: steep mountains, huge granite facings, waterways, and plenty of trees. We descended slowly into one of the fjords and then the pontoons touched down and we gradually came to a stop floating surrounded by mountains and the unique quiet of nature. We were told we could step out onto the pontoons to get a better look and take some pictures. I did climb out but since the pilot had explained how deep the water was, I double-wrapped my camera strap around my wrist and never let go with both hands as I took several pictures of our surroundings. After a short stay we got back to our seats and took off for more sightseeing, or flightseeing as they sometimes call it. As we neared the end of our big circle trip we descended and flew past Ketchikan and our docked cruise ship along with other vessels and finally touched down and taxied back to Taquan Air. This was one of the most memorable experiences we have had while cruising. We both enjoyed it so much that we had to buy matching zippered vests from their gift shop. So if you have been there before, like on a cruise, and you are tired of the usual earth-bound view of glaciers, trees, mountains, and wildlife, take a couple hours and get this unique experience. And I would personally recommend you experience Taquan Air.

May 2011 flight to and over Misty Fiords (yeah, I'm a little late with this review). Great flight, pilot, water landing, everything. Well worth the cost. As others have mentioned, even if the weather doesn't look all that great, it will still be awesome.

The Husband and I flew with Taquan Air because they were the provider for our excursion we booked through Celebrity Cruises for our 70 minute plane flight to Misty Fjords with 10 minute water landing. The day started off super foggy and rainy in Ketchikan. We were really disappointed and not really looking forward to the flight so we weren't too enthusiastic. Fortunately that quickly changed once we got to Taquan Air! The building that you fly out of is located a short bus ride out of the city, probably about 15 minutes and then you wait in their lobby for your flight. Our pilot was super friendly and nice and quickly got us excited again about taking the flight. He said that the fog and rain shouldn't be a problem, we would still be able to see the fjords and it may even be better than if it were clear outside because there would better waterfalls. Cool! The flight to the fjords and back was amazing! And shockingly, not as scary as flying in a full sized plane because you are a lot closer to the ground, so in my mind a lot closer to living if a crash landing is necessary. True to our pilots word, the fog and rain don't hinder our views too much. We were still able to see the amazing coastline, mountain tops, cliffs, waterfalls, fjord and even some animals during our flight! Even thought the flight there and back (with water landing) was only 80 minutes, it seemed much longer than that and we really felt like we got our money's worth.

Taquan Air offered the best tour we took in all of Alaska. We did the flightseeing tour with a water landing in Misty Fjords. When you arrive or possibly on the bus on way to the water flight port you are shown a short safety video and sign in with your weight. You are then assigned into small groups or 4 or 6 passengers with a pilot. Initially they had separated my husband and I, but we wanted to be together since technically this was our honeymoon trip. I am so glad they rearranged a few passengers to make sure we were on the same plane. Our pilot was John and he was awesome. He asked for volunteer to "co-pilot" and take the other front seat, so my husband jumped at that chance. The two other couples had the middle seats and I had the "gunner" seat at the back, which John was not kidding when he said was the best seat in the house. I had the back seat to myself with windows on both sides for the best view and the best photo opportunities in the air. You have head phones to block some of the plane noise and to listen to the pilot describe some of the sites on the way out and to some music on the way back in. Maybe he should have let us request the music because the old country tunes on the way back in was the only unenjoyable thing about the entire experience. Anyway the tour was so much fun we were smiles ear to ear throughout with an occasional overwhelming tear of joy. You take off from the water and if you arrived like most tourists on a cruise ship, you get to check out the town of Ketchikan and your cruise ship below as you head for the fjords. The views from both sides were unbelievably beautiful. Though a little fog in the morning, we still got a clear view the sights. We were most impressed by the mountaintop lakes and the waterfalls along the sides of the cliffs. The water landing is what sets this tour apart from all others. I did not even know what this meant, but he set down the plane on the water in the middle of the fjord with waterfalls on either side and mountains all around. Photos will never do this scene justice. The pilot invited those willing to step out on the floats of the plane. My husband jumped right out and I had to climb over the other passengers not willing to get out of the plane as it floated on the water to join him. Yes it was a little scary, but definitely exhilarating. John offered to take photos and while I feared dropping my phone in the water below, he managed to take a shot of us and dropped no one or nothing. I was breathless as we took off from the fjord and enjoyed the sights on the way back to the port. The time was just right, definitely long enough to get your money's worth. I would highly recommend Taquan Air for your air sightseeing choice in Alaska.

This was the last excursion of our two week Alaskan cruse-tour. It was also the best. Our pilot Clark was fantastic. The old Otter plane was just great. Everyone had a good view and thanks to Clark there was a lot to see. His commentary added to the enjoyment. The lake landing and the ability to get out and stand on the pontoons was just amazing. I would rate this 10 stars if I could. Not the cheapest tour but unbeatable bang for the buck.

Everything went off without a hitch. We were picked up at the Ketchikan Visitors Center at the designated time and shuttled over to the dock. Randy loaded us up and we took off not long after. Throughout the flight, we were provided with a lot of history about the region and everything we were flying over. We landed in a secluded part of the fjord and Randy took us for a short walk into the forest, even pointing out some wild blueberries the bears missed. On our return leg, Randy flew a little lower than on the way out to provide a different perspective of the region. He also spotted some goats on the mountainside and took a minor detour to look for more. Overall, we found Randy and Mountain Air Service to be extremely professional, safe and honest. Randy comes off as almost too modest about his services and tours. If you're looking for a Misty Fjords tour, book with Randy. You will not regret it.
